King_Salamon
I couldn't believe it but tonight at a local Toys'R'Us I was browsing until I came across 2 60GB PS3's sitting in the console bin. The price tag? $699.99 !?! That's an increase of $40 from the launch price! I thought this was one of the infamous bundles of some sort. When I asked the customer service guy he said it was a price change by Sony. Regardless, I was not impressed. I'll have to check with EB and others to see what they are doing. Bottom line is.... this is NOT the price change I was expecting.

King_Salamon
Checked out the Best Buy website and they have the price changed to $699.99 as well. Check out www.bestbuy.ca Strange things for sure... I guess this is Sony adjusting for the change in the value of the Canadian dollar (Approx 85 cents US right now). King_Salamon
Linky Sony say it's not them but the retailers. Yup... what I thought... I guess the PS3 is going to drop a lot before I consider buying one... well that and release something I want to play (Motorstorm is a good start!) +FujiSkunk
Oh sure, the retailers increase the price and the corporations just say, "Well, it's them, not us." But watch the sparks fly and the corporations scream bloody murder and reneged contracts and no more distribution if one store tries to advertise a price so much as $1 below MS[sic]RP. This price hike seems remarkably consistent across all the retailers for it to be completely their choice. misspent_youth
I saw 60 GB models at Walmart two days ago for 679.99, which supports Sony's story. I similarly suspect that Walmart has enough clout that if they wanted to sell the units below MSRP they would do it. In retail, you just don't f*#k with Walmart. King_Salamon
Another update was at EB today.. they still have a 60GB sitting on the shelf but the price is still $659.99. When asked, the clerk said that there wasn't an expected increase in price. This could happen any day now though, tough to say. I saw a couple PS3's at Wally World today too... no pricing was shown and I never bothered asking.
homerwannabee
Hmm, this seems like just another thing in a long line of blunders with Sony launching the PS3. With the price going up in Canada they have basically handed Nintendo and XBOX total dominance in that country. Sony should have had the $699 price tag in canda from day one. Big Playstation 3 mistakes so far 1. Having the launch delayed for too long. 2. Having stupid comercials showing the Playstation 3 floating and showing none of the awesome graphics 3. Underestimating the desire of old school games for their online site. Just now are they doing it. 4. Having the head of the company tell a reporter he would give $2,500 to anyone who knew of a Playstation 3 system sitting on the shelves for longer than 5 minutes. When he said this there were pictures of 20 playstation 3's sitting on the shelves in some places. 5. Not taking Microsoft or Nintendo seriously. With Microsofe thinking that letting them have a year headstart on the new console wars was not going to hurt them. Sorry Sony but Microsoft is a lot bigger than Sega ever was. With Nintendo, it was thinking that all the Wii was is a gimmick. Gimmick or not it was still a new type of game play with a new system for less than half the price. 6. Thinking that Graphics alone can overcome bad Marketing, bad PR, and bad management. They should of been given a history lesson on the Colecovision and Atari Jaguar and Phillips 3do for that matter.
