JoustPong's AI has always been super simple, from the original VB version thorugh the Java and Palm versions and then on the Atari:

If the ball is above your head at the moment, flap.


That's it! It doesn't try to predict, which is why it misses sometimes, but it's a decent strategy.


I think I was a bit by someone who wrote about writing an AI in Pong... maybe it was breakout, they wanted to make it look like they were awesome at it, so they wrote a computer player that calculated all the angles... it was the fakest looking thing in the world, the computer would just go to right place and wait. Much more realistic was a simple "put the paddle under where the ball is right now" (Or even better, only start moving when the ball comes to you...)
