Gregory DG
Just wondering who out there has used this? I'm in the processing of learning it for a summer video game class I'm going to be teaching for the kiddies. I see that a 7.0 version was just released at http://www.yoyogames.com/ . It seems pretty flexible if you don't care about 3D stuff (although it claims to be able to do 3D.) It does have a learning curve though if you want to do anything substantial... Anyway, just wondering your thoughts about it?

Anyway, just wondering your thoughts about it? I have used it a bit myself but a student in the Technology Club I run at the School District I work at has been doing some really cool things with it. He has recreated Doom with some advanced features and is now working on a Guitar Hero clone in 3D using the Doom code. We are hoping that we can get MIDI support so he can just read the files that are available freely on the Internet, but that seems to be difficult at this point. We've been watching for 7.0 and will have to download it. Corey
+Random Terrain
I would download it once in a while from this site: http://www.gamemaker.nl/ But like other klick & krap game makers, it seemed harder to use than it should have been. None of these things are as intuitive as they should be. Maybe YoYo Games has or will make it easier to use if they are not a bunch of yo-yos. 8bitclassics
I just downloaded the 7.0 version and looks to be pretty much the same, maybe some more commands and features, but same programming style. New feature is extensions which allow people to expand the capabilties.
Pixelboy
I tried making a game with Game Maker some years ago (can't remember the version number) and I didn't like it. The engine under the hood works very nicely, but the dev interface was WAY too fragmented and hard to navigate. Actually, I'm glad I tried Game Maker, because it gave me some pointers about what NOT to do with BasicVision (if I ever go back to working on that project, that is). If 7.0 is the same as 6.0, the 3D stuff is in the registered version that you'd have to pay for (along with a few other bits and abilities) I have 6.0 installed and have for a year or two but beyond fiddling with a couple tutorials, I never really got into it. I had planned on attempting an RPG or sorts but I just couldn't get a grasp on the interface and my desire to use it faded. Still have it installed all the same in case I ever change my mind. Anyway, just wondering your thoughts about it? Yes, it's good, but it limits you to what functions they give you. I mean, it works and does a good job doing what it does, but there are some things you only could DREAM of doing on it vs. an interpreted/compiled programming language. Still, I find it a good way to waste an hour or so, though. Edited March 9, 2007 by Dragnerok X
