Christopher T Leach
With all the good stuff coming out of the forums about "Price Hikers" I felt the need to start a new topic, so here it is. What makes a person want to start collecting Video Games and why do I always seem like I am trying to collect for too many systems? I go out of my way to purchase these systems that i do not even want and then I am addicted to getting gams for the system. I picked up a 3DO the other day because I got a good deal on it. Lets face it, the #DO was worse than PS1 and the games are even worse. Does anyone know of any good games for the 3DO. I picked up a japanese Sega Saturn the other day with 5 games for 70.00 and i dont even know why. There is no Japanese Sega Saturn store around me and I do not buy much on ebay anymore, so why would I buy it? Maybe somebody needs it. I will just hold on to it until I come across someone else to sell it to? NO!!!!! I cant resell it, once I have it Im not sure when I will see it again, let alone even buy it again. My current system count is sky high. Ive got the following: 1 sega saturn japanese 1 sega saturn american 1 jvc x eye 1 panasonic 3do 7 or 8 nes 8 bit systems 3 or 4 super nes 15 or 20 atari 2600 4 or 5 atari 7800 2 atari 5200 1 atari jaguar 4 or 5 gameboy colors 2 psp 4 or 5 ps2 1 ps3 1 xbox halo edition 2 neo geo aes 1 neo geo cd 1 neo geo pocket 3 or 4 sega genesis 1 odyssey 1 sega cdi 2 nintendo 64 the list goes on and of course i find myself picking games up for them all the time. I am out of money and I cant stop buying video games. I think buying video games could break up a happy home. Where does this need to buy more come from? Who got you started buying video games? Why does sony want to stop the obsession by making their ps3 only play 1 title and then you can not resell the game. leave your thoughts
Dusk2600
There are a few good 3DO games Return fire (which u can get on ps1 for 50.00 for 3DO it is 2.99) And Gex also a ps1 title.
Dusk2600
Where does this need to buy more come from? In ur case it sounds like OCD, if ur buying multiple systems of the same kind just to hoard, thats an issue. As for collecting for a ton of systems, thats no issue. Who got you started buying video games? grew up with snes (parents and grandparents) Why does sony want to stop the obsession by making their ps3 only play 1 title and then you can not resell the game. What the fuck are you talking about?
Mark III
I assume the reason we keep buying more systems is because we start finding less games for the systems already owned. Everyone in the hobby likes finding those elusive games in the wild and online. However, as the collection grows running across the games you want becomes more and more uncommon. Therefore the answer is to buy a new system and have a fresh start on a new collection of games. Also most of us grew up with just one system which somewhat limited what you could play. Intellivision owners couldn't play missile command, Master system owners couldn't play Mega Man, SNES owners couldn't play sonic and N64 owners couldn't play anything that didn't suck. And there's nothing cooler than the games your friends have but you can't get for your system. Therefore when you see a system you don't have for a good price it's hard to pass it up because you don't know what you might be missing. Dusk2600
N64 owners couldn't play anything that didn't suck Now wait a fuckin minute, have u ever played Blast corps, best game ever
Mark III
Yeah I may have let my personal bias get into that analogy a little bit. Sorry. But I should have gotten a "sorry" on a little note tucked into the box of the N64 back when they charged me $249.99 for that piece of shit. homerwannabee
The only system that I have ever bought anything for on Ebay is the Atari 2600. The other systems I have I have gotten all from yard sales, swap meets, and used stores. I also collect for the Sega Genesis and probably will buy stuff for that system someday but I also realize that this is a system that is a lot easier to collect for than the Atari 2600 so I have time to wait before I get heavy into that system. JamesD
I have games for the Ti99 and don't even own one. I've decided that I have enough extras and stuff I don't need that I should start putting things on ebay myself.
Scumdogg
and N64 owners couldn't play anything that didn't suck. Quoted for truth. I started out on the Atari 2600 as soon as i could hold a controller in the early 80's. After that, my family always had at least one system out of each new generation of games. But it was usually just that one system, never the competition, and the games we could buy were VERY limited. I never owned the newest or most popular games as a kid, always just what hit the bargain bin. I think this made me a better gamer, because as we all know the cheapest titles are always the hardest ones to beat. But looking back, i always felt like i had missed a lot that was important or popular in gaming. Not to mention we tended to sell old systems at garage sales to put money towards new ones. I came out of childhood feeling like i shouldn't have gotten rid of things, and having retained an interest in the things i never got to play. Now that all but the rarest games of the past are easily obtainable, it's just fun to be able to play pretty much anything and everything, on any system i can find. I was looking at a case on a bookshelf where i keep my favorite SNES games the other day, and i realized that when the system was new, just the contents of that case were probably $1500 or so retail. I paid, i don't know, maybe $100 for everything on it. There's just a level of freedom there in finally being able to get what i want. This is also the same reason i collect action figures, and even though that collection is bigger than my game collection at the moment, there's just something immensely satisfying about the games. Not only am i catching up on what i missed from 30 years of gaming history, it's like a permanent safeguard against being bored...i will never in my life not have something to do. ewing92
What makes a person want to start collecting Video Games and why do I always seem like I am trying to collect for too many systems? That's a hard question really, why do people start collecting video games? I don't know, it really has to do with collecting itself, me personally, i think that the greatest thing about having a ton of games is to showcase your collection, well, playing them is also good, in fact equally good, and it makes me much happier when the two parts of gaming come together, which starts out the world of collecting. Collecting gives you the option of playing the game and having them, thus making your life better each time you add on to your collection. About the collecting for too many systems, i dont think that collecting for too many systems is possible, maybe, but it just seems to me that it would give you more things to do and more things to experiance. It also makes your showcase look better when there are differnt things that are there. Does anyone know of any good games for the 3DO.? The 3DO is one system that i haven't dived into yet, i just havent had the opportunity really, and havent found a good deal in the wild anywhere either. Although it does seem pretty interesting, it seems like it would be pricey to build up a good collection. The Neo-Geo is also one i have yet to dive into because i am positive that those games are expensive. I picked up a japanese Sega Saturn the other day with 5 games for 70.00 and i dont even know why. There is no Japanese Sega Saturn store around me and I do not buy much on ebay anymore, so why would I buy it?? It was a spur of the moment type of thing, it sounded like it was a good idea, so you did the smart thing and took advantage of it.Plus buying that could show you a new side of collecting and gaming, and the sega saturn was pretty popular over in Japan, so you shouldn't have too much of a hard time finding any games for it online other than ebay. I havent got any systems that arent NTSC, but since a couple systems i have can play other formats(such as my modded nes that can play PAL games and the psp can play japanese games) i was thinking about buying some games from other countries, just too see if i like it, like for example, i was trying to find a japan exclusive rpg, but have yet to really follow through with it. Maybe somebody needs it. I will just hold on to it until I come across someone else to sell it to?? If you can get more money out of it and you arent attached to it in any way, then sure, someone down the road might want it and you could profit after all. NO!!!!! I cant resell it, once I have it Im not sure when I will see it again, let alone even buy it again.? I cant resell my games either, just never know when or where or even if i will get it again, sometimes i even have trouble getting rid of my doubles, like my Street Fighter II game for genesis i have a second copy of. I got it when i was young and just can't let go, plus it was my first double i think, either that or my Air Fortress game for nes, which i had to buy another copy of becasue i thought my other one didn't work(it was my first and still only boxed nes game ) My current system count is sky high.? So is mine, mine isn't quite as high as your's but i do have all of the main systems from the generations, except for some from the earlier era's such as the 2600 rivals and the nes rivals, and i dont have the not-as-popular systems from the generations either, such as the neo-geo, 3DO, Turbografx, etc. The systems that you dont need and dont want to play is when you get into the more collecting aspect of the gaming field. the list goes on and of course i find myself picking games up for them all the time. I am out of money and I cant stop buying video games. ? Same here, basically all of my money for i cant even remember how long has gone to video games. I do have to stop though, because i dont get much money at all, and usually wait until i find a real good deal. Where does this need to buy more come from?? It's just something inside of you that wants more, it wants a bigger collection, for bragging rights, and for entertainment. Who got you started buying video games?? My mom and dad, when i was 4 years old, i literally remember it exactly, kind of, well, it was my birthday, just turned for, so i climb into my mom and dad's bed after they get up and am laying there and then my mom shows me a cartridge of sonic the hedgehog, and at the time i didn't know what it was. Well after that i guess i had the system and the next part i reme, ber is going to this flea market and we got a controller and rf cable, it was 1996, so the PS1/N64 was already out, although i dont remember figuring out about the N64 until i got to Wal-Mart, or was it K-Mart?, and played a platformer, i think it was DK64 or something, and i remember the joystick for the N64 for the firsttime, and i was asking my dad if that is how the joysticks were when he was growing up. Anyways, back to my genesis story, well when i first tryed it out and played it for a little while, i sucked, i mean i sucked, i remember not being able to beat the boss on sonic 2's first level, and had my mom come in and do it for me, or my dad. And the second level of sonic the hedgehog took me the longest time to beat, man, and i still have nightmares today about falling into the water at level 2 of sonic 2 off of the moving board things. So my mom and my dad are the ones that got me started buying video games, although at the begining it was my dad buying the games for me, ahh....good ole funcoland where we could test out games before we bought them....ahh....and i have like a thousand of the game sleeves from Funcoland for the genesis and nes, in fact, where i lived, there were two different Funcoland's, one acroos the street from the mall, and one in this big plaza. Why does sony want to stop the obsession by making their ps3 only play 1 title and then you can not resell the game.? I think that was only a rumor, or a stupid idea that sony had, same difference. wow, that was one of my longest posts i ever wrote.... christianscott27
If it makes you happy dont over analyze it. Nobody ever woke up in a gutter with a gun to their head because of game collecting, worst case scenario you crate it up in the basement or sell it on ebay. I would however suggest you quit buying things on ebay and stick to finding stuff in the wild, at least that way you're getting out and keeping your costs lower. I liked steamgear-mash for the jap-sat .
potatohead
For me, it's being able to continue to enjoy experiences I love. It's also about learning and tinkering. Nothing beats older systems and microcontrollers for that total computing experience. These things let you get right down to the bits. That's cool on a whole lotta levels. Finally, it's a pass on. When the kids got old enough to grok the games, we pulled out the 2600 and a bunch of stuff. They had a blast and ask for the thing regularly to this day. Simple twitch games like KABOOM! and WARLORDS are just as great today as they were then. The kids like the experience just as I did. The biggie was Star Raiders though. It's a great game that's got some depth and action. Two people can enjoy it, one running the keyboard, the other running the controller, both planning strategy. I play this with my youngest from time to time. There just isn't anything like it today. Past that, I could care less. All the little variations, etc... are essentially beyond my focus. Same with every little system. Emulation does expand that a bit, but then it's not really worth grabbing the actual games, unless one is really solid. I'll do a cabinet or two some day, with enough flexibility to reproduce some great experiences. Maybe make an entertainment room, with one of those, a table top, nice TV and a favorite console or two. re N64: Who are you kidding? We've played multi-player Perfect Dark and Battletanks tons of times. Totally worth keeping the machine for.
Giltygear
All those capcom fighting games fucking rocked on the jap. saturn... do yourself a favor, pick up the VS. games for that and some of the SNK fighters... great ports. Shooters, too. Radient silvergun is still up there, but layer section/galactic attack are still (moderately) low
AtariJr
i have i believe 47 games for my saturn.. my favorite system by far. look into the japanese stradegy, fighting, and shooter games. oh , and pick up a set of twin sticks with virtual on and the gundam side story trilogy... wonderful, just wonderful. as far as collecting game systems, i do this as well. its usually when im bored wit hthe current generation and want something new. right now, the games for all the new systems is slow, and will be till april or so. so i got some new saturn, ps2 , and ps1 games recently. i also purchased a ps2 slim recently. its the need to want something new to play with. what usually happens with me, is that unless a system impresses me, i usually sell it after the excitement of the new device is over. which is why im constantly repurchasing consoles haha and have only recently stopped selling my systems. as far as the greatest system created (if you love the above genres) please us my list of saturn games that i own as a guide to what to buy: Shining Force III Sonic R NiGHTS into Dreams Virtual ON Sega Rally Cyber Speedway The Need for Speed World Series Baseball '98 NBA Action 98 Fighting Vipers Grid Runner Virtua Racing Tomb Raider World Wide Soccer Solar Eclipse Pandemonium Daytona USA Independence Day Soviet Strike Gungriffon Virtua Fighter 2 Virtua Cop Virtua Cop 2 Myst Battle Toshioden URA X-Men: Children of the Atom Road Rash Nights Virtua Fighter Konami Classics Hang On GP WipEout Tempest 2000 Pocket Fighter Dead or Alive Fighter's Megamix Street Fighter Zero 3 Sega Touring Car Championship Vampire Savior Saturn Bomberman X-men VS Street Fighter Samurai Spirit: Best Collection Panzer Dragoon 2 Zwei Real Bout Fatal Fury: Best Collection Metal Slug Gundam Side Story Vol 2 Gundam Side Story Vol 3 SD Gundam G Century S Super Robot Wars F F1 Challenge PS: oh yea , good luck, some of these games are worth over 100 buckeroos. Or should it say "Genesis" instead? I second the nod toward Worldwide Soccer. I have the Victory Goal Edition. For a Saturn owner, I'd also like to run down my collection so they'd have suggestions: Present: 1995 Sega Rally Championship Arcade's Greatest Hits Volume 1: The Midway Collection 1 Arcade's Greatest Hits Volume 2: The Atari Collection 1 Area 51 Christmas NiGHTS Into Dreams Sampler Command & Conquer D Daytona USA Daytona USA CCE Enemy Zero Gex NiGHTS Into Dreams Off World Interceptor Extreme Revolution X Shining the Holy Ark Solar Eclipse Sonic 3D Blast Tempest 2000 Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 Virtua Fighter 2 Virtual On wipEout Worldwide Soccer: Victory Goal Edition Worldwide Soccer '97 Virtua Cop Virtua Cop 2 Past: (and still looking for) Burning Rangers Robo Pit Saturn Bomberman Shining Force III Oh, and for hardware, I've got (and recommend) Three light guns: Stunner Virtua Gun Super Cobra (this works with most PSX gun games, too, including Time Crisis) Standard second generation Saturn pad Two 3D "NiGHTS" Control pads Twin Stick controller for Virtual On Saturn Backup cartridge for game saves Saturn arcade joystick I also used to have the NetLink modem, the Sega Mouse, and the keyboard adapter. And yes, some of that stuff is worth some cash. Shining the Holy Ark is worth every penny of the $50 it can fetch, and some of the rest is worth a bit. Ze_ro
Lets face it, the #DO was worse than PS1 and the games are even worse. Does anyone know of any good games for the 3DO. I bought my 3DO purely so I could play Star Control II. Even though there's a PC remake that is every bit as good, I wanted the original. There are a few other decent games worth getting if you have a 3DO, like Icebreaker, Shockwave, and Total Eclipse. There are also a few games that are worth getting just for the hell of experiencing it, even if you don't plan to play it again, such as the Daedalus Encounter, Robinson's Requiem and PaTaank, (At least, that's why I bought them... whether or not the one-time experience is worth it for you is something you'll have to decide for yourself... judging by your post, my guess is that you're in the same boat as I am). You're right though, a lot of the games for the 3DO are either terrible (Mega Race, Virtuoso) or were done better on more popular platforms (Doom, Myst, Flashback, most of the FMV games). It's hard to justify spending the cash on a 3DO when there's only a handful of games you're likely to play. NO!!!!! I cant resell it, once I have it Im not sure when I will see it again, let alone even buy it again. If it helps any, I have at least 8 Atari's, and I would never sell any of them. Most of them are at least different variations (Heavy Sixer, Darth Vader, 2600 Jr, etc), but I don't think I could ever even sell the duplicates. the list goes on and of course i find myself picking games up for them all the time. I am out of money and I cant stop buying video games. Well, I find that it helps to gain some sort of focus. I passively collect for pretty much everything, and will buy anything from Intellivision to CD-i if I find it in the thrift store... but there are only 2 or 3 consoles that I actively collect for... that is, I'll actually try to find specific games for those systems on eBay and such. I never actually look for SNES stuff on eBay, but I routinely look for Jaguar and Dreamcast stuff. If you happen to have much more plentiful stores in your area, then I'd recommend focusing on games that you actually WANT to play and simply make them a priority rather than just raking in whatever comes your way. --Zero

BLAH.. if you have any original saturn controllers ill take em, i only have one plus a 3d, sold my other type of saturn controller. btw, controllers aside, i think we can at least agree that the first model saturn looked a lot nicer with the led lights, and shiny front and tinted cd window. the second one honestly looks cheap. and besides, mine looks like it just came out of the box , so its purdy

marcfrick2112
Oh boy, what started the collecting bug for me? Blame 2 things: Atari and my dad...First, my dad always told me never to throw anything out Next, my first Atari 2600 sort of died after a short time, (very loud buzzing instead of sound) IIRC this was just as Defender came out ... (KB Toys had some type 'pre-order' deal for Atari carts that were due out soon) So, basically, we HAD to replace the 2600.... When I forgot about the 2600, my dad took it....and still has it. Since then, if I found any 2600 at a resale shop, or rummage, I would buy it....I didn't want that 'last' 2600 to die! Well, now I have a Vader, A Jr., and 2 4-switch models of some sort... Around '99, a local store was selling Saturn systems for $39.99, my dad heard about it and bought me 2 of them! (pretty cool dad, huh?) After that well, collecting in general sort of got out of control.... Atari 2600x4,5200,7800 Commodore 128 x 2, C-64 Tandy Coco, Tandy Model 4P, RS 'Pong' clone from 1979 TI 99 Mattel Aquarius x2 Intellivision Colecovision Sega Genesis x 3, 32X, SegaCD, Saturn x2, Dreamcast x2 NES x2, N64 (Hey, it was really cheap!), GameCube, GBA TG-16 Amiga 4000 x2, A1200 x3, CD32 and a no-name 8086 PC with hideous EGA graphics....
