Video Game Collecting? What is it to You?

Recommended Posts

There, I fixed it for ya. :P Or should it say "Genesis" instead? :D

*this is the part where a genesis fanboy comes into the picture*

now hold on, hold the phone, hold the phone.

I dont know what your talkin about but "Genesis Does What Nintendon't". FOOL! :P

Damn right, name a nintendo game where you can play as a comic book creator kicking your own drawing asses and 1 rip off looking jason who is trying to save his family

Geez, that is a mighty hard question there, in fact i think that is a trick question, because there are none! What, wait a minute, what is this? A great new game coming to the genesis? I here it's called Comix Zone, and it is gonna kick ass!

WOW! I guess all this talk from Sega about Genesis Does really was true! OH! In your face Nintendo!

:? what is this all about lol. and i never understood the hype of comix zone, i just ended up selling my copy.

The newest addition to my consoles (well, if you could call it a console) was a second model 2 Game Gear. I got it for linked play.

Here's a list of the consoles/portables I have:

Model 2 Game Gear (one owner)

Sega Saturn (model 2)

Nintendo 64 (gray, with expansion pak)

SCPH-30001 PlayStation 2

Atari 7800 (model 3)

Atomic Purple Game Boy Color

Nintendo Entertainment System

Atari 5200

Game Boy brick

Blue Game Boy Pocket

Opaque Purple Game Boy color

Model 2 Game Gear (multiple owners)

The reason I have so many portables is simple: I want to be able to link them up in two to four player matches.

I must be one of the only ones who likes the N64. I like some of the games on it....plus I always liked the controller design. Loved the controls on most of the games.

Some great N64 games:

Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Blast Corps, Mario 64, Mario Kart, Shadows of the Empire, Robotron 64, etc. etc.

I loved Comix Zone. It was graphically impressive....to me, at least, at the time. It was also a fun beat 'em up.

I'm still looking for a copy to buy so I can relive the madness that was COMIX ZONE!!!!!

i loved the n64.. damn f-zero x was so fun at my freinds house, it made me want the buy the system, and besides the pack in donkey kong 64 game, it was the first game i purchased. oh yea, and rogue squadron was the only rogue squadron game in my opinion... as the II and III are just recreating movie scenes or scenes that have nothing to do with a story.

Well, frankly if you're not into modding your console, a japanese saturn is far superior to the US model. Almost all of the stand-out games for that system never made it to US/EU countries. Radiant Silvergun, Soukyugurenta, Batsugun, DoDonPachi, etc. If you're into hardcore shooters or tentacle porn (don't ask), a japanese saturn is your best friend. I modded my us version with a region switch, etc. so I never felt the need to pick up a white saturn.

If it makes you feel any better, I also have a huge collection of consoles. I can't say I have many games for some of them, but having my ginormous console stash lets me play all of the best games no matter what console they were exclusives on.

In fact, I just picked up a 3DO earlier today. It was a total score too, not because I really wanted one (if I really wanted one, I would have bought one ages ago), but because it was only $10 and a rare developer version to boot (plays unencrypted roms)...and because it was one of the few consoles I haven't picked up already.

my list so far....

atari 2600

atari jaguar

intellivision

colecovision

nes

super nes

n64

turbografx-16

sega genesis/32x/cd

sega pico

sega saturn

sega dreamcast

sony playstation

3DO

I may get a few more but I'm in no hurry. I already have all the ones I really wanted and then some. The current generation of 'retro' consoles just aren't that interesting to me. Some of it has to do with reliability problems (the PS2 is rife with those) but mostly because most of the games are backwards compatible with the new systems (very true for GC,PS2, but less true for the XBox). I've also not seen that many 'new' games that were both outstanding and didn't get a PC port.

I do have a few duplicates, but with the laser issues on fifth/sixth generation console hardware that's completely justifiable. It's not as if you can buy parts for them and in many cases the consoles come cheaper than the control hardware. A dreamcast goes for $30 tops, but try buying a set of maracas or a twin-stick for that price.

Cheers,

-David

With all the good stuff coming out of the forums about "Price Hikers" I felt the need to start a new topic, so here it is.

What makes a person want to start collecting Video Games and why do I always seem like I am trying to collect for too many systems?

I go out of my way to purchase these systems that i do not even want and then I am addicted to getting gams for the system. I picked up a 3DO the other day because I got a good deal on it.

Lets face it, the #DO was worse than PS1 and the games are even worse. Does anyone know of any good games for the 3DO.

I picked up a japanese Sega Saturn the other day with 5 games for 70.00 and i dont even know why. There is no Japanese Sega Saturn store around me and I do not buy much on ebay anymore, so why would I buy it?

Occarina of Time, Banjo Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day...there were definitely some outstanding exclusives for that system, even if it did have seriously questionable sprite issues. (due to the texture limits of the hardware a lot of games got tiny textures with the blur setting cranked up to 11)

I must be one of the only ones who likes the N64. I like some of the games on it....plus I always liked the controller design. Loved the controls on most of the games.

Incidentally, for you Saturn addicts out there, Jandaman's still sells mod-chips for all model-2 Saturns (the round-button model). Not for purist collectors, but a must for game freaks who won't pay *!$@+^ $150+ for a copy of Radiant Silvergun. I'm all for supporting our game developers, but me paying ebay shills $150 for a discontinued title gives them exactly $0 in royalties. It's not as if the game is even uncommon (in Japan), it was one of the system's most popular games just like the similarly overpriced (but excellent) Panzer Dragoon Saga.

We collect because we can! I do it because of the love i have for these old dead systems and because outside of Wii Sports on the Nintendo Wii i just dont care for the modern game systems and there games.Too me it fun to hunt down old game systems and games and to trade games with people on the marketplace. Its a exciting thing for me i guess.

The second saturn controller was the Japanese model here in the US. For some reason the Japs felt the need to give us a controller designed for wookies and Andre the giant. The second model here was identical to the original Japanese version, which (in my opinion) is one of the best 2d controllers of all time.

oh yea, and the original saturn and controllers where the best , the system with the shiny black front and oval buttons with led lights, with the controller that had an arch type shape that looked less like a genesis controller out of the two versions made for the saturn. for games like nights and other stuff i really suggest a 3d controller, although i really dont like the joystick much, but its alright on some other games.

The original saturn controller was absolute trash! the L and R buttons never felt like they were working, the d-pad sucked and it HURT, and the controller itself felt cheap and already broken out of the box. i love the second model controllers

btw, controllers aside, i think we can at least agree that the first model saturn looked a lot nicer with the led lights, and shiny front and tinted cd window. the second one honestly looks cheap. and besides, mine looks like it just came out of the box , so its purdy ;)

i will give you that - the first model system did indeed look very nice. but define "looking cheap" for the second model...

...

Where does this need to buy more come from?

Who got you started buying video games?

Why does sony want to stop the obsession by making their ps3 only play 1 title and then you can not resell the game.

As classic gamers, because the 3DO < PS1 doesn't mean it's not worth playing. When it's a current generation battle that's when it matters, but to collectors and older gamers it just doesn't matter. I've been wanting to get my hands on a 3DO for several months now, but of course I'm restricted to online since they never pop up around here. I'll more than likely do a full swoop and buy a system w/200+ games that are mostly complete.

The first thing to understand is I'm a gamer first, collector second, salesmen third (also very cheap). I buy games when I find them in the wild for low prices or stumble across one I've got an itch to play. The cheap ones, I really don't care if they end up sucking because they weren't much of a cost to me anyhow and I've actually stumbled across a lot of gems and under-the-radar games this way. I will fork out the money on complete, great conditioned games I've either been hunting for over time or that have nostalgic value. For those games I play and really can't stand I sell them off and decide to stay clear anytime I find it again. There's not too many of these games floating around, but it's mainly due to not buying ones that clearly suck. If there's a game that's cheap and I already own it with a potential profit to be made, I take advantage of it otherwise it's a bit more difficult to afford some of the games I own. So, with all this stated, my main push to buy more is to have a more rounded gaming experience with different generations of systems and to have a good time. There's also an excitement that happens (and this is with most people) when stumbling across a great deal or something you've been wanting for ages.

What got me started? More than likely my lack of games growing up. From 1989 til 1995 all I had was a Master System, and from 1995 to 2001 the GameGear was my secondary system. It was around 2001 when I finally got an N64 (from my grandparents) and in 2002 a PSone from a g/f. From that point on I was destined to buy games to play and enjoy on multiple platforms and get a general idea on the market. While I was with a lack of games though, all my friends always got the new systems at launch and handful of games. It was always me hopping on my bike and riding over to their place to play the latest game and check out what was out. When I saw the Dreamcast for the first time I was amazed at the quality of games. Marvel vs. Capcom, Dynomite Cop and Power Stone were top notch IMO. So, that was my drive to see what games existed while I was in the dark ages. On a side-note though, I was a complete PC gamer and around 1996 I got into emulation on my PC and was playing some of those great GEN, SNES, NES and Atari games which helped me out some with experience but it wouldn't be until later on that I'd actually get into console games.

Sony's PS3 stance I'm not too familiar with since I don't pay too much attention to modern gaming. If I recall on the topic though I thought they did away with the idea of locking out games for resales because game store chains would deny sales of the system due to not being able to profit off used games, of course this wouldn't affect retail outlets.

Sony's PS3 is the one system that will still be standing after the console wars are over for 2008, and beyond.

why buy anything other unless you want to download nes classics from the wii and kill the whole idea of collecting.
