Just saw this list and I think I've got a few of the undumped cartridges (and a dumper).

I posted PAL Black Hole (Hot Shot / Goliath) here last month.

I'm not sure if your list is up to date.

Black Hole was added to the V18 collection, but forgot to add it to the database.

I will add it to the database today.

Which still undumped games you own?

A few it seems and some doubles going by the first post in this thread.

All of these are PAL versions

Forest, Magic Puzzle (Clean Label) and Skin Diver appear to be new versions to Stella (but probably only have the company logo removed).

Sea Monster, Space Raider, Space Robot, Squirrel & Snail all show as other known dumps in Stella.

Tom Boy has the ROM for Open Sesame on it.

Magic Puzzle - Video Safe Sticker has the Sancho logo and is a known dump.

I'm a bit surprised that Tom Boy contains the Open, Sesame! ROM from Bit Corp.

But I now noticed that the Finnish Hot Shot brochure talks about Ali Baba in the game's description.

I've corrected this in our database.

Only Mafia is still missing now.

BTW: do you own Space Eagle and Overkill as well?

I wonder if the Sancho logo is still on screen.

Yes I do but all of them have the Sancho logo and are the same as other known dumps.

Weirdly though I'd never noticed that one of the Overkill cartridges isn't a Hot Shot one.

It's the same shell as the Taiwan - SP-2xx Series/Rainbow Vision ones with the S.S. on the back and doesn't appear to be listed at all.

For reference, and for people tracking this thread, I was wondering what items from the first post (last updated in February 2020) can now be marked as done. Soooo, I've taken the liberty of:

  • copying the first post,
  • moving all the old (pre-February 2020) filled requests to a separate section (which I think improves legibility for people looking to add new dumps),
  • and marking the dumps that have been added since then, in-line.
  • I've also added Color Bars to the NTSC list, and Seal to Whales and Treasure Discovery to the PAL list, but not the Air Battle prototype of Air Raiders since prototypes don't seem to be the premise of the list.

Have I missed anything? Hopefully this is helpful to @Omegamatrix -- thanks for all the years of maintaining this list; I'm just trying to pitch in a bit. :)

BTW I can't tell, has the NTSC Assault cart by Bomb been dumped or hasn't it? There's a ROM by "Bomb - Onbase" in ROM Hunter's set; is that the dump in question? Atarimania doesn't list anything as missing.

Awesome, ROM Hunter! OK, so here's a revised version of the first post with your updates. Hopefully what I've done will make it possible for @Omegamatrixto just copy and paste.

By the way, could I get clarification on what's happening with the NTSC version of Assault (Bomb)? It's not listed as missing on Atarimania, but is marked missing here. How does the ROM marked "Assault (AKA Sky Alien) (1983) (Bomb - Onbase) (CA281).bin" relate? (Cool game, by the way)

IIRC three NTSC dumps of the BOMB games turned out to be different from the ones that were assumed to be NTSC BOMB dumps (dumped somewhere in the nineties).

The NTSC Assault from BOMB has never been verified, so it could be that a new NTSC dump of this game differs from the one that has been around since 1997.

Got it! That'd be great to find out. I know BOMB carts are prone to ROM failure so I imagine we might have to compare 2 or 3 dumps to be sure, or to try to reconstruct a hypothetical original from various compromised dumps.

Since Assault has a kill screen bug, it strikes me as particularly worthwhile to confirm that that bug was present in the original and wasn't introduced by a later release/clone or bad dump. (I'd imagine it was present in the original, since from Thomas's description it was a clear case of bad programming, but it'd be good to know for sure.)

I am curious. When a ROM image is submitted, how is it "verified"?

It basically means when two dumps with adequate documentation match exactly (byte-for-byte).

1 hour ago, Rom Hunter said:

Well I'm talking about documenting dumps really, rather than a general game database. Atarimania is a great site of course.

What exactly do you mean here? Atarimania is documenting if a ROM has been dumped.

This will might give you some idea: https://no-intro.org/

But the gist of the idea is, rather than just be satisfied with there being a/any dump on the internet, its about having multiple matching dumps from named contributors, with documentation of the physical media (e.g. photos, serials) and documentation on what dumping method was used, in order to create a romset that can be called "verified" to some degree. This process has helped correct many courrupted or missing dumps for various consoles, and the same sort of process is used for thousands of discs on http://redump.org/ (its also used to a lesser degree with MAME).

This is more or less what I -with the help of many others- have been doing for the last 25 years:

Its a great collection, but it doesn't really cover what I was saying.

I think it does.

All ROMs in this collection have been verified and double-checked on dump errors, overdumps, underdumps, etc., and the ones marked with the ~ symbol 100% match the original releases.

Their MD5's can be identified and shown by Stella and their filenames contain the most updated known information.

Or were you talking about the 200+ (Unknown) ROMs in my collection?

In most cases these Unknown ROMs are from (often multiple different) Brazilian or Taiwanese companies that pirated the original version in the second half of the eighties.

Not too interesting to archive in my opinion, unless they put their logo in (in which case they are not Unknown anymore).

For example: the 'unverified' ROM on your site named Dice Puzzle (Europe) is actually called Dice Puzzle (1983) (Sancho - Tan's Electronic Co.) (TEC005) (PAL) ~ in my collection and is a 100% verified ROM dump of the original Sancho cartridge.

And that's just one of many, many ROMs.

So what I would suggest is to download my V17 (or upcoming V18) collection first and start updating your VCS ROM section with the ~ ones and then add the other ones in until you're left with (Unknown) ROMs, of which you'll have a hard time finding their source (and if you eventually find the source, you'll find out it's one of the many, many generic Brazilian or Taiwanese companies 100% copying each others games that were pirated from the original ~ release).

Thanks, that's useful. However, how is the "~" mark determined? And can the type of info I mentioned before (i.e. dumper name, creation date, tool used, photos of the dumped physical media) be found anywhere?

The ~ mark is the result of many years of researching and comparing the roms. Sometimes a [fixed] version is found, meaning the original release had a second run which had the bug removed.

The buyers back then mostly didn't know about this (or had to find out themselves), because it wasn't always announced by the company.

Photo's of the dumped media and the dump tools weren't attached or mentioned in the early days of ROM dumping, but nowadays it's always shown which cart was dumped and how.

You can find scans of the correspinding media on our game page.

An indication of the ROM dumping date can be found in the ROM file properties, but this is not always secure.

Dumper's name doesn't interest me all that much.

In the long run this is irrelevant IMO.

Maybe you should explain your ROM naming a bit more detailed in the text file accompanying your ROM collections. Only ~ is explained so far.

Yes, I've been thinking about that for some years.

The .bin file information follows a very strict sequence.

Also, I'm planning to include a text file with information about the [fixed] versions in the upcoming V18.
