Question about PS3 BC?

Video

Recommended Posts

Ok, something I want to know about the PS3, is this thing Backwards compatible? Fully, not at all? Or is it halfassed like the 360? The reason I want to know is all the way up to the end, Sony made it sound like it would definately be BC, but now, about half the stuff I read sounds like it is, and the other half sounds like it isn't. And then there's some that make it sound like maybe it is partially, but not fully. So what?

Anyhow, I know NOBODY around here that has one, and almost one person that's kind of remotely interested (besides myself, but price is my issue) And so I have no way to test it, that'd be the easiest way to see if it was backwards compatible.

Anyhow, just wonder, tha

nks.

Well I hear that most of the games work now after the patch, but it's not 100%. Why it can't be 100% when the PS3 basically has a PS2 inside it, I don't know. I'm sure CPUWIZ can answer that one.

The new PS3's are going to do BC purely by software now, which isn't as good as the hardware BC they have now. I don't know if it will get better over time or not. I also don't know what happens to the PS3's with hardware BC when the software BC gets released. Do they use both?

Peripherals.

The software emulation will never be 100%, some games really kick the shit out of the PS2, nearly impossible to emulate all the tricks programmers used to exploit the PS2 hardware.

Even the development community does not know this.

So is it just peripherals then? That's not too bad then.

Well I think I'm going to pick up a PS3 with the EE inside it before they go completely to software emulation. Any idea when they're going to stop shipping PS3's with the EE? I wonder if there will be a way to tell?

I'd imagine sony will change the model number when the Emotion engine is removed. If not, they probably will add or change a revision code somewhere. It shouldn't be difficult to tell once you know what revisions have the EE (those that are out now). The later revisions quite possibly won't.

What's the software emulation gonna need to load anyway? Is it supposed to be installed on the hard disk, coded into a chip, or loaded by the user? If it is on the hard disk, you'll certainly be able to see it with some kind of file browser...or you'll see less hard disk space than what you should have. If it's gotta be loaded, there's a dead giveaway that your brand shiny new PS3 doesn't have the EE inside.

I just have the feeling, though, that one should keep a PS1 and PS2 handy anyway. I, for one, am not happy with Sony's backward compatibility. That is not a discussion for this thread, though.

First off, avoid anything that uses custom controllers. So, Time Crisis and those guitar games are right out.

Otherwise, everything I've tried in my library has worked. (But I haven't tried everything, yet)

I've been meaning to contact the friend I gave Robotech: Battlecry to, since someone said it doesn't work.

Ugg.... :x Their going to take the hardware out and put in software of some kind? Screw that, I'll just have to keep my PS2 around (of course, I kept my PSX and PSone anyways so :ponder: ) Is the PS3 even powerful enough to emulate the PS2 without hardware? I don't really see it being that good myself (probably more like the 360's faulty emulation)

Well, you can buy the PS3 now (not like there's a shortage) and you're guaranteed 99% emulation. You can even go online and use the HDD for games like Final Fantasy XI.

Software emulation can lead to some good things if Sony can manage to update it regularly. We could have PS2 games running in 1080 with anti-aliasing and better framerates.

That would be awesome (of course, I'm still running my old mid 80's crusty ass CRT TV so :P ) But yeah, that would still be pretty awesome.

Does anyone know how good the PS1 BC is on the PS3? I know 99% of the PS2 games work just fine, but what about the PS1 games?

I've tested two PS1 games which had problems on the PS2: Mortal Kombat Trilogy (which had an issue where it would hang on the two player continue screen) and the Atari collection disk with Paperboy on it (where the graphics would be screwed up). Both worked fine.
