8th lutz
http://www.gamespot.com/pages/news/story.p...mp;subj=6168876 This means consumers are stuck with buying the $600.00 version of the ps 3.
Albert
Sony has officially stated that there will no longer be a 20GB version sold in North America: http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/11/r-i-p-pl...cially-no-more/ ..Al

Video
Well, I guess they figure, hell, nobody can afford it anyways, what's another $100? In my case, eh, not much. If I had $500 to spend, I'd probably have $600 to spend.
shadow460
Look on the bright side. In 30 years, an NTSC PS3 20GB model might be worth something.
misspent_youth
As one of the posters said on gamespot, I think this is a prescursor to a price drop. Since they lose more money on the 20GB than the 60GB, a price drop would mean even more money lost on 20GB models. Now the savings (i.e. smaller losses) can be applied to the price drop. moycon
As one of the posters said on gamespot, I think this is a prescursor to a price drop. This would be nice. I won't hold my breath but it's definately something to keep an eye on. Maybe if the do this and drop the 100% BC like they did in Europe they can offer the PS3 for a decent price. $399.99?? Of course I imagine dropping BC will open up a new can of worms since some folks seem to think it a neccesity now. Me personally, Ive had a 360 since March 2006 and have yet to play an original Xbox game on it. With my current back log of games to play, I doubt I ever will. Them dropping the 20 Gig model means nothing to me, I wouldn't have considered getting it anyways.
Tempest
It was stupid to offer a 20GB model in the first place. Let's face it, the PS3 is expensive, and if you could afford one in the first place you were probably going to buy the 60GB version anyway. I know I never even considered the 20GB version (I don't know if I actually ever saw one either). This is the same reason Microsoft is going to drop the Core unit once the Elite comes out. Sorry, where were we? Oh yes, if anything it will be a $50 - $100 price cut. And probably only before the Christmas sales season.

From what I read, they weren't going to drop it right away, they just weren't going to make anymore and slowly phase them out. It makes sense, do you really want to have THREE configurations for your system on the market? Tempest

It makes sense, do you really want to have THREE configurations for your system on the market? Especially since the Core was a terrible idea anyway. It's just wrong to sell a game machine without a means to save your game. The Saturn was only a little bit more expensive than the Playstation when you factored in the need to buy memory cards for that system. The 360 Premium was only a little more expensive than the 360 Core when you included a near-useless memory card. What a sneaky way to take money from peoples' (probably mostly parents and grandparents, eh?) pockets.
liveinabin
Of course, Europe has never had the 20Gb model. I figured the deletion of the US unit would follow pretty quickly.
ninjarabbit
Still though Sony and Microsoft have to keep things fair to the people who bought the $300 360 and $500 PS3. I agree in general that's it's a bad idea to release significantly different versions of your console like this.
