US PS3 & Japaneese Games

Can I play Japaneese games on a US PS3? I ask because once Hot Shots Golf 5 comes out I will want to play it and I do not think they're going to release it in the states.

If it wont work on a US PS3, can the PS3 be modded?

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Why dose the PS3 US play Japan PS3 games ? From what little I remember I don't think there older systems PS1 - PS2 plays imports (much like other older systems). I remember people modded systems for import JPN game's that was kinda a big deal and a lot of money at some places to mod with others saying "we don't mod, its illegal".. Dose the Wii and Xbox 360 play JPN imports ? I do know why PAL games will not work because there uppance will come soon.

The Wii and 360 do not play imports and you can also not play import PS1 and PS2 titles on the PS3, those are still region encoded. It was a move on Sony's behalf to make sure that anyone who is installing/making modchips (good luck with that - LOL) for the PS3, is doing it purely for illegal purposes. No longer will the "we do it to play imports" excuse work.

Is there any way (legal or otherwise) to play import PS1 and PS2 titles on the US PS3?

Bluray discs aren't region encoded and the US and Japan are both NTSC so everything works.

That's probably the coolest thing I've heard about PS3 yet. Why not use Europe games on US system? If it's just resolution, can you use a Europe TV (or format) to play the games, or is it something else?

Of course, I've never imported, to bad, so many great games out there, but eh... I don't read Japanese (for RPG's) and most the others will have US and Europe Equivalants, or get released here anyeays.
