72R DA 17868  223

Bought in May of 2021.

Restoration in progress

Update on the progress of this machine. The poor video quality (very ghosty, blurry) lead me to suspect the state of the electrolytic capacitors.

A large moderately bulging cap. Visible to the right of the cap is a small blob of brown gunk. Suspected a leak.

Indeed! Working with a vendor for replacements for all the electrolytic caps. Most of the gunk cleaned off the board, but a slight hint of residue remains.

Half removing the remaining electrolytic caps to determine their values and read the silkscreen identifier:

  uF Voltage Non Axial?
C7 47uF 10v
C39 10000uF 16v radial

C102 22uF 16v
C115 10uF 16v
C155 22uF 16v
C162 10uF 16v

Above list was cross checked with the 1200XL field service manual 'Parts List' PDF that is here in the forums.

Video looked as below. Photo is sharp.

Hoping this thread isn't solely for serials but for 1200XL owners in general. ?   Installed new capacitors in the aforementioned machine. Before and after photos.

Some nasty solder work on the back of the rf modulator is visible. Wasn't me. Warm (yellowish) tone of photo is due to camera's white balance.

New caps and motherboard cleaned as well.  The 10000uf capacitor in the top right cant sit flush with the board due to the legs being too close together. C99 left hole would NOT clean out despite many attempts. Right on a big ground plane. C99's new cap left leg is surface mounted.

Video quality improved noticeably. Composite.

Photo itself is sharp. Some ghosting still present? Video quality does appear much improved. Besides new replacement caps it's 100% stock.

Cap kit is from console5.

The recap is a definite improvement.  There does appear to be a tiny bit of ghosting visible, but it's nowhere like it was in the first photo.

FWIW, my 1200 had the worst video of any A8 I'd ever owned.  It ended up getting a UAV to fix that problem, and is now vastly improved.  A recap on top of that probably wouldn't hurt, though.

Karl,  I noticed in the spreadsheet, one of mine is in red. What does that mean? Just curious. Also, I am listed at 12. I think I have 13. I will verify my numbers.

Red usually means the number isn’t verified or it’s guessed.  The pivot table doesn’t always seem to count totals correctly.  I’ll take a look tomorrow.

Well I finally found Unit 4 up in the attic tonight...

so this unit is 83S 020625 073

These I posted here a few years ago:

Taiwan 72R DA 24420 253 Board sticker DA 213 REV. A, underside label JUN 18 1983 B, lucky enough to score the matching serial box with it.

 Taiwan 72R DA 18824 223 Board sticker DA 223 REV. A, underside label JUN 02 1983 B

USA 83S DA 015042 043 no Board or underside stickers.

This week I installed UAV in 24420 , next I will work on the install of Ultimate 1 Meg.

Only 015042 remains box stock.

I only have 12 listed for you, so I must be missing one.

I didn't have any of these in the list except the 015042 which you must have gotten off eBay. :)

Three 1200XLs aquired last month in various states of dis-repair and missing parts.  PCA logic parts replaced from scrap 600XL and parts I had on hand.  Not so with keyboards, only one.  All 3 Made in Taiwan.

 1.  72R DA 14100 ?13 (last three washed out).  PCA front: DA213 Rev A  PCA rear: Mary 24 1983.  Works, no keyboard, power LEDs and cart. port plastic and shielding.

 2.  72R DA 04292 173  PCA front:  DA 173 Rev A.  Rear:  XX Apr 1983 (Didn't want to take it apart again to see the day of the month.)

 3.  72R DA 25959 253  PCA front:  DA 253 Rev A.  Rear:  Jul 24 1963 B  Missing top shielding.

Now, where can I get two keyboards???  And a Cart. port cover?

I received all three for work done to revive a dozen or so XF551's and a couple 1050's.  PROM Ucode HYPROM A works great in the XF552's using SDX.

Jul 24?  Are you sure it isn't Jun?  Could be July, but it just doesn't match up with the case then.  As for parts, well, ebay or asking folks around these parts.

That is a lot of 1200XL love.  You have 20 now?

I especially like the 012345 serial.

? ? No these are not mine. Just image grabs from mostly eBay auctions.   Yes that 012345 serial is the best!!

I just acquired 72R DA 01973 153

It works except the keyboard needs a mylar replacement.  The mylar has been ordered, so when it comes in I'll do that along with the SIO 5v upgrade.  If the GTIA is socketed, I have a SOFIA from an 800XL I have that I might throw in as well.  If it's not, then I won't mess with it.

1200xl is fully socketed.

Keyboard can often be repaired by fixing the fingers as per flashjazzcats video.
