AtariStationCube
I'm new to emulating Atari roms on my PC and I was wondering how exactly this is done. I followed the instructions in the help guide of the MESS emulator, which is supposedly the only working 7800 emulator out there and it said to put the system rom (I guess that would be 7800.rom) as well as the roms you want to play into a zip folder (which must have the same name as the system rom, which is 7800). So, I did that but nothing happened. I have a feeling that it may have something to do with the fact that the roms have a file extension of .A78 instead of .rom. What did I do wrong? +Mitch
OK, you want the 7800.rom to be in the biosa7800 folder and your .a78 files in the softwarea7800 folder. If the a7800 subfolders aren't there then create them. Good Luck. Mitch http://atari7800.atari.org
AtariStationCube
Well, I created subfolders in the bios and software folders and put the .a78 file(s) into softwarea7800 and I put the 7800.rom into biosa7800 but nothing happens... +-^CrossBow^-
well in addition to putting the files where they are needed...you also have to configure MESS to tell it where the stuff is. Simply putting those files in the proper directories doesn't tell MESS how to find them. Also I am not sure about the file here...but the 7800 bios file I have originally was named wrong in the Zip. I had to rename the file internally. The file was originally just called 7800.rom or something in the zip file I had. I had to rename it to a7800.rom. Hope that helps. MESS is just that...a real MESS to config. But once you have it working...It rules for the 7800 emulation alone.
+Mitch
When you say nothing happens, what do you mean? You should get an error message of some type. This would help in trying to figure out where your problem is located. Oh, and make sure everything is upzipped, for some reason MESS doesn't always work right when the ROMs are in a zip file. AtariStationCube
When I say nothing happens I mean just that. I don't even get an error message of any kind. The screen just stays the same as before I attempted to run MESS. I believe everything is unzipped. Although, naming 7800.rom to a7800.rom may be my problem. A7800.rom won't work. Which version of MESS are you using? The current windows version is 56.1. Mitch http://atari7800.atari.org
AtariStationCube
Well, I kept 7800.rom the way it was. By the way, I have version 56.1. Actually, MESS does start but I get an "unable to initialize machine emulation" error.

Are you, by chance, trying to start the game by going to file, and then choosing "Play Atari 7800"? Mitch http://atari7800.atari.org
AtariStationCube
Hmm....the edit in my post didn't go through. Oh well. I was going to say that it's working now. Thanks.
