Sony knocking $100 off the PS3

60 Gig PS3 discontinued.

So after they're gone, you have no choice but to buy the $600 model again. Thanks Sony! :ponder:

Sony Europe is well known for making assumptions, not sure I'd believe that. There is a lot of jealousy between SCEE and SCEA, for some strange reason.

EDIT:

Quote

"Those quotes from David Reeves are not accurate. He said that if they had lowered the price in Europe, that territory would have run out of their current inventory by the end of July... As announced this week, SCEA's product offering in North America consists of a 80GB PS3 available in August at $599 and a 60GB PS3 available now for $499. We have will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of our consumers for the foreseeable future."

Check out 1:48. But then, I'm sure a low level guy like this wouldn't know what was going on. :P

Sorry, I am not going to install some plug-in from a random Norwegian website, what is it?

Why do you have to insall a plugin? What are you using, a C64?

It's absolute refutation of the earlier quote you gave.

EDIT: From Kaz Hirai

VIC-20 actually.

Ah, well you might not be able to view that video on that site, but you can program a silly bird thing flapping its wings in basic like nobody's business. If it weren't for that odd secondary character set I never could have made anything look like anything on the Vic-20.

*I* didn't have to install a plug in. It was just Windows Media Player. Here's what he said:

The $499 price adjustment that we did for the 60 gigabyte version for the American market - We're no longer in production for that product. So once that product is gone from the retailer's shelves, then we're back to the $599 dollar SKU only.

Ya know... I wonder if this whole "$100 price drop" wasn't just a ploy to get MS to drop their price so they'd lose more money on their consoles? Or maybe it was just a way to blow out the remaining 60gig stock (and let's face it there was probably a lot.)

Probably the latter.

Wow I just bought a 60gig today. If the 60 gigis going to be discontinued,I guess I made a smart move.

There isn't much on the PS3 that catches my interest. I ended up getting Resistance Fall of Man, Ninja Gaiden Sigma and NBA 2K7.

I guess Best Buy isn't doing the 5 free Blu Ray movies. When I asked about it The sales clerk seemed confused. It doesn't matter too much since I don't have an HD TV yet anyway.

Best Buys doesn't "do" the 5 free movies.

Its an offer open to anyone that buys a Blu-Ray player till 9/30/07 from the folks that invested in Blu-Ray.

Details here...

If you don't want the flick send em to me...I'll PM you my choices.

Also the fact the PS3 $100.00 cut is temporary is now hitting the news.

I imagine folks will REALLY be snapping up the 60gig modlels now. (If they weren't before)

What a bunch of deceptive assholes at Sony. They wait for E3 to make the news of a price cut because they knew the world was watching, and then pretty much after E3 they make the announcement that they are going to discontinue the model. Well, I am sure Sony knows what they are doing over there, I mean the whole reason people werent buying the PS3 to begin with was because they wanted 80 gigs and not 60. And we are back to square one again.

Now Sony USA is saying that the price cut is permanent. Looks like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing...

Tempest

It is permanent. The price is cut permanently on the 60GB model, until it is gone forever. Spin, spin spin.

Seriously, their three way damage control is starting to remind me of Sega.

The price cut IS permanent. The issue is they stopped production of the 60Gig model so once they are gone. Thet's it.

From this day forward...permanetly you can get a PS3 60Gig for $499.99.

However finding one available in 2 or 3 months might be a little hard.

I 100% guarantee that the $499 price point is permanent - for the 60GB now, and the 80GB afterwards.

Of course Sony can't say this now - who's going to buy the 80GB model? They want to make whatever extra money they can until the 60GB models are sold out. Then, magically, in the fall Sony will, out of the kindness of their hearts, so that people everywhere can afford Christmas again, cut the price of the 80GB model to $499 just as the 60GB model sells out (or probably a bit afterwards, to ensure absolutely no stock left in the channel). They'll get themselves another round of good PR for a new "price cut" and boost sales just in time for the holiday season. Meanwhile, they haven't really done anything - they can claim to have made two price cuts already when all they've actually done is boost the specs of the $499 system a tiny bit.

Their plan obviously got completely janked by David Reeves and Kaz Hirai, neither of which are very smart guys in terms of PR, but I'm 100% convinced they're still going to go through with it.

I'm still planning to buy a 60GB model in a hurry now because a) I know everybody else is going to, because nobody seems to believe me when I tell them this is Sony's plan, and b) I want hardware backward compatibility, especially given the PS3's current game selection. I need to tide myself over somehow.

so it's not so much a price drop as it is a way to get rid of a SKU? then the 80 gig is staying at 599 , right? or are they going to do something like announce it to 499 later in the holiday season?

Hard to say at this point. Unlike spacecadet, I believe the 80Gig will stay at $599.99.

It should be noted that the 80Gig model will come packed with Motostorm.

If they do drop it back down to $499.99 by Xmas, $5 says they remove the game packin.

M$ recently had an interview and they seem pretty dead set in their price. however, review sites constantly say that they will probably have a price drop after sony does. im curious to see if the 360 puts their price down if sony makes the 80 gig 499. judging from the interview it seems Moore doesn't even care that the ps3 has things like blue ray, or wireless inet.. things that cost extra... to him he thinks price will simply sell no matter what's in the box. im curious if he will stand by this if the 80 gig is reduced, or if he will put it down so the price reduction is moot on sony's end.

I'm so glad I got the wii and not this overpriced system. Only way I'd have one if someone gave me one for free as a present. The wii was my XMAS present anyway

What does that actually have to do with the PS3? Seems like this comment should be in the Wii section...or the anti-ps3 section...

Didn't you know? This is the anti-PS3 section! There's nothing good about the PS3. It's an overpriced piece of junk.

Meh. I give jpfalcon2003 a free pass this time. After all, I wouldn't own a Wii unless I had been given mine as a present, and I posted as much in the Wii section. Plus, I'm not sure if I should parse the statement as "I wouldn't own a PS3 unless it was given to me for free." or as "I wouldn't own any game system unless it was given to me for free."

Pachter just came out yesterday and said he believes $499 is here to stay as well. So it's not just me saying this. That guy is not always right but he does have inside sources; that's what they pay him for.

I do agree that they will most likely remove the pack-in when they drop it down to $499. It'll be $499 for the same package you're getting now at that price, just with 80GB and with software back-compat.

I bought a 60GB system yesterday because I wanted hardware back compatibility... I'll probably be playing more PS2 games than PS3 games for the time being. (Yeah, I feel a little buyer's remorse now, but it was one of those situations where I felt like there was not going to be a better time to buy for the foreseeable future... not until the 80GB model goes *below* $499 and there are more good PS3 games on the market.)
