With all the hype I expected the graphics on the 7800 Prosystem, after my refurbishing event, thorough cleaning washing scrubbing the systems graphics would be like the Nintendo NES 8 Bit. I think the NES has better graphics, I could be wrong but with the games I have which came in the auction:

Donkey Kong 7800

Pole Position II

Food Fight

Crack'ed

Winter Games

Mario Brothers

UNless these games are graphically poor, I am not impressed with this system at all. i thought it would on par with NES but graphics are somewhat primative.

Any suggestions on better games for the 7800 Sound and Graphicwise? I am a fan of the old arcade style games but willing to take some suggestions! Thanks again!

Well, the technology is older than the NES. And it was designed for games like Robotron, Ms. Pac-Man, Asteroids, etc. not tile based games like Super Mario Bros. Plus the sound chip is the 2600 one, so don't expect much there.

If you want to be impressed, note the lack of flicker as compared to the NES. Especially with Food Fight & Robotron.

I was disappointed too when I first powered up a 7800 and played Food Fight. I was expecting more than a single screen game. But ya know what - I found out the game was fun! I hadn't played it before, as best I could remember, but once I got over what my "expectations" may have been, I came to like the 7800 for what it does well - the best translations of arcade games you'll see on an Atari console.

To like the 7800, you have to like the kind of games it plays.

And if you like PacMan at all, buy the collection cart, and you'll never put your 7800 away.

Without getting into the "which system is better than X" (we beat that to death in previous threads), there are certainly better looking games than the ones you have. Donkey Kong 7800 is very similar looking to NES Donkey Kong, as is Winter Games though neither is a killer title on either system.

Have a look at my phony commercial and see if there are ones you like.

I love that commercial, Mark. You should update it with Beef Drop, Pac-Man Collection, Space Duel, Froggie, Santa Simon, Q*Bert (or whatever it's called now), Tubes, and the other 7800 homebrews/hacks. Shoot, you ought to even include the Rescue on Fractalus and GATO protos! :D

NES release = 1983 (as the Famicom)

7800 release = 1984

Wanna see some stuff? Look at F-18 render polygons. They aren't much, but they are there. For sound, get any Pokey title like Beef Drop or Ballblazer. Even Commando does well with Pokey playing music only, and Tia doing the effects. Somewhere there exist a few Beef Drop carts that generate their sound with the Tia chip exclusively. I have one, and it's still very impressive.

As for graphics, go with Asteroids, Choplifter!, Joust, Alien Brigade or Missing In Action. F-14 isn't half bad, either. IMO, it is on par with Top Gun 1 and 2 on the NES. Robotron: 2084 is a definite way to show off the 7800's graphics capability.

I own both systems. I have most of the 7800 library, and I have games like Burai Fighter, Willow, and Tengen Tetris among my small NES collection. The NES games typically sound better, due to the fact the 7800 games don't make full use of the sound hardware available at the time. Graphically, though, quite a few of my NES games are a flicker fest, with tiles sometimes disappearing completely.

You're not likely to be impressed here at any point. That's a dream you just have to give up on. There is Ballblazer and, I guess, Beef Drop (although the sound in that game is very good, it's still just the a couple arcade tunes and sound effects, so it isn't, say, Megaman, Metroid, Zelda, or Castlevania by any stretch).

Basically, you need to know that, soundwise, you have an Atari 2600.

Gamewise, get Joust and play it, then play NES Joust, then burn NES Joust. Also, given what you seem to be looking for, you need to get Midnight Mutants.

my personal opinion is to just give up on the system now and don't waste your money, this system ranks #1 on my all time worst console list.

I have almost 30 games for it and the only 2 games that I enjoy are Dark Chambers and Commando. I wanted so much to like Moto Psycho but it's so choppy. So if anything, get Dark Chambers and Commando.

There are two reasons to own a 7800......Pac-Man Collection and BeefDrop.

Agreed, but I would add the Cuttle Cart II for the third.

To me the most special thing about the 7800 that hasn't been mentioned is the two-player simultaneous modes of arcade favorites. Centipede and Asteroids are great fun in two player simultaneous mode -- especially team play, where the last player standing can bring the other player back to life if he earns the next extra life target. I also enjoy playing Robotron with 2 players -- one controls the movement and the other controls the firing cannon. Great fun!

Well Thanks for all your oppinions. I got the system cheap enough $25 but did a lot of refubishing to make it look good again. I am guessing the 5200 has worse off gameplay and graphics and sound being a predecessor to the 7800 or am I wrong? I will check out some of the games you recommended (barring the shameless plugs for Beefdrop lol) Thanks!

You really should have checked out some 7800 game screenshots online before getting it.

But really, it's the gameplay that is important, and you must realise this yourself otherwise you wouldn't have gone for a 7800 in the first place and would have got an Xbox 360 or something instead.

You don't exactly have any of the 7800's better looking games(well, pole position 2 wasn't half bad).

Seek out some of the later games. Commando, Ikari Warriors, Scrapyard Dog, Midnight Mutants, Alien Brigade, Ninja Golf...Tower Toppler is fairly easy to locate, and has the advantage of being one of the best looking games on the console.

Ballblazer also looks very well, and has superior scrolling and music to the famicom version.

Robotron is also an impressive display of the machine's ability to move sprites without flickering.

It's not the prettiest system, and it's abilities were rarely tested in the 80s, but when they were the machine could compete with the NES in looks.

7800 =/= 5200 in any way whatsoever except the Atari brand. One must play each system and determine independently whether they like it or not. Loving or hating one system won't mean you love or hate the other. I own both and would dare to step out on a limb and say the 2600 beats them both because of the game play and the sheer number of titles.

*looks around* The only 7800 game I have out right now is Pac-Man collection. I have about a dozen 2600 carts lying around the game area and I have some Game Boy carts that I didn't put away after adding them to my catalog.

In the event you get your hands on a 5200 and try some games, let me recommend Qix, Miner 2049er, and Star Raiders. That'll give you something to start with and see if you'd like to work with that console instead.
