lowscore
I am guessing the 5200 has worse off gameplay and graphics and sound being a predecessor to the 7800 or am I wrong? Better sound. Worse graphics...usually. Anyone know if Karateka released for the 5200, or was it just the 8 bit computer line? No Karateka for 5200, as far as I know. Prodos8
Xevious on the 7800 is very good in fact is probably my favorite except for the emulated version. The programming talent and money for 7800 developement just wasn't there like it was for NES. So the games suffered and many of them seem rushed and unpolished. zincmann
Again I appreciate EVERYone's opinion. If you refer to my original posts I own the following consoles: Atari 2600 Atari 7800 Colecovision Nintendo 8 Bit Sega Genesis 1 Sega Genesis 2 Sega Saturn Nintendo 64 Sony Playstation Sony Playstation 2 Xbox Halo Edition Xbox 360 So yeah you could say I have been holding the 8 Bit 7800 in high comparison to similar 8 bit consoles. I do want to get my hands on the Epyx games for the 7800 not the 2600 versions which play in the 7800, used to play on my now sold :-( Commodore 64; Summer Games and Summer Games II, Winter Games, California Games, IMpossible MIssion which I am watching on Ebay right now. Some of my favorite games were from Epyx.
Rik
my personal opinion is to just give up on the system now and don't waste your money, this system ranks #1 on my all time worst console list. The king of the trolls returns Ya I know, why does this tick even read the 7800 forum? Obviously to get another war goin,to get his kicks, best to ignore,we all know the 7800 is a great system, thats all that counts
DracIsBack
The programming talent and money for 7800 developement just wasn't there like it was for NES. That would have required Jack to sign a cheque, which he didn't like to do.
stirrell
I really liked Commando, Ikari Warrors and Xevious on the 7800 and thought they compared very well against the Nintendo versions (of course, my memory could be a little foggy after these many years :-)). I think Scrapyard Dog and Asteroids are very impressive graphically. I think the 7800 is a great system for arcade translations. As others have said, the sound was the weak point of the 7800. I think graphically, the 7800 compares well against the NES. But, it would be interesting to see if the 7800 could have pulled off some of the more intense, involved games that came out for the NES like the RPGs. Brian R. The king of the trolls returns Ya I know, why does this tick even read the 7800 forum? He's stating his opinion based on his experience. That's not trolling. If you want to counter what he says, fine. But just crying "TROLL!" - or any other personal namecalling or insults - doesn't serve anything, and is a waste of a post. Lauren Tyler
For lack of flicker, look at Commando definitely. On the NES, the enemies were constantly vanishing and flickering, while on the Atari 7800, no flicker whatsoever.

Brian, let's not start a rehash of the other thread where this was discussed. I think the issue with Atari5200 is that it is obvious he doesn't like the 7800. That's fine, but he is not defending that point of view... just saying it sucks, essentially. We've all heard it - and I am new here. But I have no idea why he dislikes it. If he has specifics, cool. If I continually post in the 5200 thread that it was a terrible system, and that's it, then I would expect people to call me out on it. But let's not rehash the same arguments... I am just trying to point out that he brought nothing to the discussion... just said he doesn't like it. That said, Brian, I appreciate what you add to the discussions. Don't take this as an attack on you in any way.I can understand people not liking the 7800. But people should defend that point of view if they want to post it in a forum that will obviously have a lot of 7800 fans. Yeah, he doesn't like it. At least it's from actual experience. And the big thing here is - he did not simply or only say it "sucks." He did say more. But, strangely, his full comment was not quoted by the Troll Patrol. Here it is in case you missed it: I have almost 30 games for it and the only 2 games that I enjoy are Dark Chambers and Commando. I wanted so much to like Moto Psycho but it's so choppy. So if anything, get Dark Chambers and Commando. So he did add to the discussion. And he actually likes two games on it. But look - this thread was started by someone who was disappointed by the 7800. Should it only be followed up by all the 7800 lovers telling the OP why he's wrong? But I'm not surprised he doesn't follow up. Why would he with this kind of response?
Lord Helmet
I fired up the 7800 this morning and played it for an hour or so. It had been a long time...and the 7800 still kicks ass for classic arcade ports Yes, the sound sucks on most titles...but I can live with that after growing up with the 2600. Sometime, I really suggest you look at Atari5200's post history in the Atari 7800 forum. You'll see why he gets under people's skin a lot ... BSA Starfire
I like my 7800, not had it for long but here in the UK price is a big difference, 7800's are very, VERY cheap, £10 will get you a system from ebay with lots of games. A NES will cost you £40 with 1 game & it probably won't work too well(retched cart ports). Colecovisions will probably cost about £100.Games are also super cheap for the 7800 too, unlike the NES or Coleco. I love the built in Asteroids, Galaga and Centipede are also wonderful. I realise from a American standpoint all this pricing is different, but here the 7800 is fantastic value. We also got the really nice pads as standard. almost makes up for the fact that we never got the 5200 in PAL land at all. Thanks god for the XE GS, another very cheap system here. I also really like the style of the syetm physically, nice looking machine, aged very well in my opinion, unlike the NES. Just my tuppence worth. Best regards, Chris
BydoEmpire
I recently picked up Robotron for the 7800 and it looks (and plays) fantastic. I find Dark Chambers incredibly dull as a game, but graphically it looks pretty good to me. Tower Toppler looks pretty nice, too.
