EricDeLee
Would you buy the 60GB one right now for $499.... or would you wait around for the 80GB for $599? That's the question that was asked today by a co-worker. I told him I'd grab a few people's opinions. Let me know what you think.

Yeah, you do get the best game for the PS3(Motorstorm) with the 80GB, but the $40 extra for 20 more Gigs isn't worth it to me. I don't think i'll even use half of the 60GB's. moycon
I'd definately go for the 60Gig Model.... What's an extra 20 Gig and you can pick up Motostorm off Amazon used for like $30.
EricDeLee
That's kind of what I was telling him. I didn't know if there were anything different about the two aside from the 20GB. As for finding the 60gb versions... fairly easy. Local stores here still have them, and then of course the PX on post carries them.
Gregory DG
I'd probably wait until the 80 gig gets $100 knocked off and Sony starts blowing those out too. Smaller drives means fewer demos, videos, and full games.

I would get the 60 gig version and if I needed more room, I would just upgrade.
shadow460
60 GB new from the PX. You'll save more money on taxes than you would by buying a used system.
moycon
Smaller drives means fewer demos, videos, and full games. What full games? The arcade games? Surely they don't take up much room on the PS3 do they? I have over 40 full Xbox Live titles and they take up roughly a few Gig on the 360, I hadn't paid much attention to the arcade games on PS what are they like a Gig or more? Smaller drives would mean fewer demos, videos, and full games (Altho I'd be suprised if you bought every game available right now and in the next 2 years if it would put a dent in 60Gig) but honestly.... Why does that matter? Are there really people out there that spend $500+ to play demo's and watch Underdog trailers?
Mendon
Biggest difference between the 60gb and 80gb is the Emotion Chip is in the 60gb while the 80gb will use "software solutions" for backwards compatibility. Mendon
EricDeLee
I'm fairly happy with the Emotion chip. I mentioned this as well to my co-worker. I'm not exactly sure how well the 'emulation' would be. So I still advised that he should just buy the ones in the store right now.
Gregory DG
What full games? The arcade games? Surely they don't take up much room on the PS3 do they? I don't know what's available now, but you can be sure that downloadable full games are coming. DVDs are becoming the thing of the past. Software developers are chafing at the bit to eliminate the middle man and all that extra expense of packaging and materials. If it happens this generation or not is still in the air, but it's very possible this scenario could happen: Imagine that the latest, greatest game will only be available for download. And it's 10 gig. But you've only got 2 gig free on your hard drive because you've filled it up with all your other full games. What to do? Too bad you didn't get that hard drive that's just a bit bigger, huh?
Flojomojo
Without a doubt, I would get the 60GB model PS3 while it's still available. Why? The 33% incremental storage bump to 80GB is NOT worth $100, let alone giving up FULL hardware backwards compatibility with PS2 and PS1. If you run out of space, you can throw in your own HD of whatever size you like, no need to limit it to 80GB. It's easy to upgrade the hard drive, and you can buy a 160GB 2.5" laptop drive for $80, or a 250GB drive for $200 when you're ready. Or not at all. The 80GB model PS3 should be *cheaper* to buy since it has less functionality for the older games. (Semi-related: I've got the stock 20GB (10GB usable space) on my XBOX 360 with 60+ Arcade games along with 5x 1000MB demos at any given time and don't feel the need for more space, personally. If/when the 120GB solution gets cheap, I'll think about upgrading the storage. Until then, why pay a premium for "potential?") What you're describing won't be an issue this go round...and next go round you can expect 100 Gig+ HD standard. Besides the fact....You can delete any files you aren't currently using, and if 6 months later you decide you have to start playing again push a button and there ya go. It makes keeping the necessities at hand very simple and negates the need to keep everything you've bought on the HD. And (playing around with your scenario) common sense would tell you that paying $100 more for the privilege of maybe having the option to buy 2 extra games is a crap deal anyways. Hope you're right, but I don't know how you can be 100% sure about that. They're already teasing players with gigabyte sized demos. What's to stop them from allowing full games to be downloaded? It's not ready, need more bandwidth and higher speeds. This generation is just to condition us into downloading games and movies. Maybe they will release a full game before it's all over to see how consumers react. Time will tell, rest assured running out of space on a 60 Gig drive isn't going to be an issue regardless. RickHarrisMaine
If I was to buy one, it would be on a half-price sale where the 60GB costs $250 or something. Then I'm quite tempted. Or a buy this 80GB PS3, get an HDTV free sale......
Gregory DG
Time will tell, rest assured running out of space on a 60 Gig drive isn't going to be an issue regardless. How about using the PS3 as a DVR and downloading movies and TV shows? I have a DVR with a 120 gig drive and that gives me about 60 hours worth, depending on the level of quality. Sure, people can delete stuff, but I can't be the only one who has "pack-rat-itis." 60 gig might be enough for the neat people, but it'll never be enough for me and those of my ilk! If you HAVE to keep dozens of seasons of Friends, dozens of demo's you already own the full game of, and and dozen of flicks you've already watched on your PS3 hard drive at any given time, then yeah, I'd say you're the only one. EricDeLee
looky here... I finally hooked up my PS3 to te internet. LOL.... Well... I did earlier in order to download Heavenly Sword. Pretty nice.... short but nice. I need to play around with it a bit more online. I logged onto Atariage today through it... but that was about it. I like the demos and stuff. I may try to download some more in the morning. I'm looking to grab my HDTV finally... so I may just be shopping tomorrow

You actually can download WarHawk instead of buying it with the head set in stores. It goes for 39.99 if you choose to download.
liveinabin
I'd get whatever's cheapest and then stick a proper sized hard drive in it. Anything under 160Gb is frankly pointless for all the video and game content you're going to be able to download on the PS3. Added to the fact that you can 'install' a lot of the games to the HD, and the 60/80Gb HD sizes look ridiculous.

You actually can download WarHawk instead of buying it with the head set in stores. It goes for 39.99 if you choose to download. Is it a full game? I thought I read it was a pretty decent game, but kinda light on content . Just like a multiplayer arcade game. How much space does it take up on the drive, I'm thinking under 1 Gig. Also if you delete the games on the PS3 do you have the option of re-downloading them for free? It'd be curious to see if they start offering every title for download as well as buying in stores. I seriously doubt it. I'm guessing War Hawk doesn't take up near as much space as say...Lair. If I recall, The retail copy includes a bunch of other stuff to justify the extra $$$. Like I said, I think they are just conditioning people right now. Even if you bought into the PS store and these game downloads like WarHawk. With just the 60 Gig drive you could keep roughly 40-50 games and/or movies and TV shows at any one time with the option to switch content around every few weeks provided PS3 gives you the option to delete content and keep the purchase on file. I'm guessing most people would be fine with that, and if they weren't, I doubt an extra 20 Gig would satisfy them.

Too bad you didn't get that hard drive that's just a bit bigger, huh? If it doesn't happen this generation, then the 60-80gig harddrive space is a non-issue. If it -does- happen this generation, Sony has yet another problem on their hands. If those games were 10gigs in size for download, they'll need to ensure extremely fast download speeds for one. (Wait a week to play the game you're paying for?) and if those games were 10gigs in size they'll also be losing sales - "I'd like to buy that hot new exclusive... but I'm short on space!" If it becomes the norm for this generation for that to happen, you'll probably see Sony starting to kick out 300gig+ variants for the PS3. If it happens next generation, and Sony's ready and expecting it, you'll see a PS4 that comes with removable 200gig harddrives that can easily be swapped around or really high capacity (10-20gigs) flash card type things. (enough to hold 1-2 games on each, about the size of a memory card! - just means you have to go out and buy more cards at 30-40 bucks each then download the game for another 30-50! ) I see a business model in that flashcard approach. I can also see them being special ps4-fitting-only. ... Anyway, my point is (I think) that gigabyte-sized full game downloads aren't probably going to happen this gen, at least not if sony is smart about it. MrAtari2600
Im going to buy an 80 Gig Why? well ill prolly be filling a lot of it with random stuff xD im sure once the price drops people will mod it like mad like the PS2 finding out all this neat stuff o.o' i like the more space
EricDeLee
I can't wait until they figure out how to play backups and whatnot. Sure would be nice. I hooked things up to the HDTV last night.... great stuff! I have some HDMI cables coming soon.. I'm anxious to see what everything looks like then. Btw... my buddy bought the 60GB one.
