Multi Gauntlet Emulator (MGE)

Have any of you tried the Multi Gauntlet Emulator? I used to play it on my Pentium Pro with SB16 soundcard, but it doesn't like my new, faster computer. It plays way too fast and the sound is screwed up.

Is there any way to play Gauntlet on a modern, faster PC? Any other Emulators out there that work better? I saw another post that mentioned "Midways Arcade Classics the Atari Collection volume 2", but is this title available for the PC?

I think Gauntlet is the best arcade game ever. A multiplayer Internet version would just rule beyond belief!

Does this Multi Gauntlet version have multiplayer (internet) capabilities?

If you are looking for the best version of Gauntlet arcade for the PC, grab the Mame emulator and you can play the real arcade rom. A lot of current emulators are using programs like Kaliera to play arcade games multiplayer over the net, so it is possible to play games like this. But Mame doesn't support this yet so I don't know if Gauntlet can be played on the net yet but keep an eye out as this is developing real fast. Most people are playing Street Fighter clones on the net now.

Thanks for your message!

You can get MGE here:

http://www.lfx.org/~corlett/mge/

It's a proprietary Gauntlet emulator that probably uses the same ROMs that the other emulators you mentioned use. I've played through to around level 100 and it's an exact copy of the original arcade version. The problem is that he made it several years ago back when the Pentium 1 & 2 were still realtively new and the timing gets screwed up on faster computers.

It does NOT have Internet capability, but you can get 4 players together on 1 computer (it supports keyboard, mouse, and 2 joysticks).

Cool, thanks for letting me know about MGE, I should've looked it up before responding. I thought it sounded like you knew something about emulation. It blows that it hasn't been updated since '97, maybe the author contributed some of his knowledge/tools to the Mame project like many others have? I have been using Mame for about 4 years and have liked quanity over quality but I've heard some good things about other emu's that only do one type of game like Pac-Man or Space Invaders.

Mame supports 4 players and has both Windows and DOS versions so I'm sure you can get something close to what you are used to. I've had some fun 2 player sessions of Gauntlet with my Hot Rod SE joystick, I would imagine it would be awesome to have 2 Hot rods or 2 X-arcade joysticks to do the 4 player thing to perfection.

thanks, O

If you are attached to playing Gauntlet with MGE, you can also use a program like MoSlo that slows down modern computers to be able to run old computer games. I've used it for a few dos games. Here's its home page: http://www.hpaa.com/moslo/

Used to be free but I think its shareware now, there are probably places to get an older free version and www.theunderdogs.org in its FAQ mentions about 3 programs that do the same thing and may be worth a try.

No, you don't sound like a newbie just a youngster or someone who missed out on some great arcade games in the 80's :P

All those games are ports/sequels to the orginal 1985 arcade game. Good place to see it with pics:

It's a very colorful and impressive arcade machine, very fun to play with 3 or 4 people.

cool, seems like you have great tastes in games because some of those gauntlet legends games were quality. I own a Dreamcast but I still haven't had a chance to play GL which is supposed to be excellent on the DC.

And now that you know about the arcade game be sure to feed some quarters into if you find it in a retro arcade some day, gotta keep those places in business :)

I'm glad you think I have good taste in games! :) if I find a retro arcade I'll probly leave $100 poorer. I bought Gauntlet Legends the same day I bought my Dreamcast, and was up until 6 AM the next morning playing it! It's the best game I've come across for the dreamcast and I'd recommend you buy it. It's also really good for N64, but not very good for Playstation. :D
