From the daring world of espionage to the distant future. Yes, it's time for The Guardian Legend!

Post a score and let's get this thing rolling! Please note! We are playing the so-called "TGL" mode, which you enter by putting "TGL" as your password. In this mode you only play the shooter stages.

Please post any tips you may have - best tip gets 1 bonus point! Only scores for games played from the beginning will count! No continues and you must use the password "TGL".

And if anyone has a link to the manual, please post it.

This week's competition ends next Tuesday (November 13) morning at approximately 9:00 am PST.

Game Info

Released on the NES by Broderbund in 1989.

Other platforms: MSX

Prequel: Guardic (MSX - 1986)

For more info, 1UP.com has a pretty interesting feature on The Guardian Legend as part of their "Crucial Classics" series. The most interesting part, to my mind, is this tidbit (in a sidebar):

Any scholar of video game Japanese knows that "gaiden" means side-story. The Japanese title of The Guardian Legend was Guardic Gaiden. Where, then, is this Guardic game?

The MSX, it turns out. The popular Japanese computer served as home for most of Compile's early games, with Guardic coming out in 1986. Guardic was more of a single-screen shooting game with a few strategy elements rather than a traditional scrolling shooter. These two sets of elements gameplay would be better separated in the later Guardic Gaiden. A lot of Guardic's music would also be recycled in the later game, giving a bit more of a feeling of connection.

Tips

None yet.

Are the powerups random, or do you get the same ones every time? And anyone have any hints for what weapons to use? Kind of weird - you play most of the first level with only your pea-shooter weapon, but by the third level all of a sudden I had a million special weapons and I didn't know what any of them did! I died while experimenting...
