Giltygear
After about a month and a half, my second hand 360 finally got the RRoD (Red Ring of Death)... I knew it was only a matter of time before it happened, i just wish it didnt happen right before i was about to play halo. i called MS and, contrary to what ive been hearing from others about this same problem, they were surprisingly very helpful about it. they said the whole process would take about a month and then they would send it back to me. i guess if i was any other sort of gamer i would go into a case of the shakes because i didnt have anything else to play. but seeing as how im a huge retrogamer, i guess this would give me a chance to fire up the 2600 again, so i guess it was a blessing in disguise. i was just wondering if anyone here had any horror stories with the MS repair center... ya know to keep me occupied
Cobra Kai
Nope, no horror stories. MS made my experience very easy. Frankly, MS does everything for you in this situation, and they were very nice and understanding everytime I talked to them on the phone. You'll get your 'coffin' box in about a week, then you'll get the system back in about 3 weeks after that. Very inconvenient to not have the console for a month, but you don't pay a dime for the process (other than gas money to the UPS store). A month? That really sucks for what is obviously a design issue with the console. I am not looking forward to having to do this myself (my relatively new console has RedRinged a few times already). ..Al
Giltygear
yeah, they had said that they were gonna throw in a month of live for free... it kinda works out because i just renewed my sub for another 3 months and the card should make up for time i cant play it
Lord Helmet
You know, their support is great. They really did a nice job with my replacement. But the fact that they can't fix the design flaw is a bunch of bs. Can it possibly be cheaper to keep fixing defective units? The 360 is a great system. One of my favorites of all time at this point...but is has this one giant blemish...
yuppicide
What is the red ring? System won't boot up? I hope you wrote down your serial # or something so you can make sure you get the same system back.

I hope you wrote down your serial # or something so you can make sure you get the same system back. You never get the same system back. I am on (I think) #5 since launch. (maybe 6... I really have lost count) However, since I have put mine on a self powered fan (not using USB or the XBOX power supply) I have had no issues for about 6 months now. And every time they have been helpful.
Giltygear
so they 'll replace it more than once???
Hyper_Eye
They will replace it every time it happens. I have only had one unit fail on me and it was a day one premium that lasted me until early-to-mid this year. I had cracked it open and messed around with it so I just replaced it with a core and re-used my hdd. So far so good.
Gregory DG
I wonder if the new smaller processors are helping solve this problem? Anyone get back one with the new (are they 65nm?) processors?

Red 5
However, since I have put mine on a self powered fan (not using USB or the XBOX power supply) I have had no issues for about 6 months now. Can you post a link to what you are using in case someone buys an Xbox 360 and has it sent to me? I have been using this fan. The light is really really stupid, but it is the only fan that doesn't leach power off of the 360. The weird part is that (contrary to common belief) I 'un-safely' have to use my 360 in a vertical position to fit it in the stand. That said, it does a really noticeable job cooling off the 360. @ Al: Yup, it is completely ridiculous. The original and the next three (so that's 4) were all switched out within 3 months after the first one died. They kept sending me back refurbished crap. I yelled and screamed, they gave me a couple games and then sent me a new one. That lasted about 6 months. This last one has lasted the longest on the fan stand. I do use the hell out of it, but I don't watch DVD's on it or keep it on when I am not using it. It also has plenty of room to keep it cool, so I really don't know what else to do. That's why I bought the fan for $25.00. So far it seems to be paying off. (knocks on wood and waits for red lights...)
moycon
Thats the same fan I use. I keep one of my units vertical as well. I haven't really ever had the RRoD but I have had to send my units back for other reasons not related to the RRoD problem. It should be noted even before I started using the fan I would sometimes leave my 360 on for hours and hours (even got left on overnight at times) and never had issues with RRoD. I’ve pulled my power supply out from beside the TV and had to clean out massive dust deposits. I wonder if other things could be causing RRoD. Like power fluctuations or surges or something related to a homes electrical system. Just seems odd some folks have terrible issues with RRoD and others don’t. +remowilliams
The weird part is that (contrary to common belief) I 'un-safely' have to use my 360 in a vertical position to fit it in the stand. Well 'unsafe' in this case only as it pertains to knocking the unit over, or possible disk scratching. By having that fan there, you are ensuring airflow and therefore eliminating what makes standing a 360 on its end by itself a bad idea.
