Hi there!

Here comes the mother of all polls! :-o

Nah, basically I decided to give up on Arcades for the moment and consider to port a computer game instead this time. Millions to choose from, so I had a look at Lemon64 to see what's popular from 1982/1983 :)

NOTE: This is a multiple choice poll! Just pick _all_ the games you like from this list!

NOTE²: Ignore doability. I can do it! :lolblue:

I'd be curious to see what a 2600 version of Gateway to Apshai would look like. Also interesting would be the control scheme: Assuming the joystick's fire button is assigned to the weapon in hand, the switches on the 2600 console would have to be used (in a similar fashion to Space Shuttle) to access the object inventory, the list of spells, the open-door-with-key function, etc. Seems like a pretty difficult project for a 2600 game...

My other choice was Manic Miner, because it's a Spectrum classic among classics (apparently). :P

How the heck do you play Forbidden Forest? I keep getting eaten (impressively gory!) by giant spiders. :(

Hm... AFAIR is it not that difficult. You press fire to load the bow and when it's ready you press fire again to shoot. If a spider is getting too close you can just out run it.

I would like to see Hover Bovver, Skramble!, Gateway to Apshai or Forbidden Forest on the 2600!

IMO porting Bandits to the 2600 would be a waste of time as we already have Spider Fighter.

From the 4 games i voted for Forbidden Forest is my favorite, i would sell my granny for a 2600 version of that! :D

First, categorical dismissals: I only voted for platformers if they were superlative (so, yes to Jumpman/Jr. and Lode Runner, no to Dino Eggs, Frantic Freddie, Manic Miner), didn't vote for blatant rip-off clones (Stix, Skramble). I also didn't vote for games that already have full or partial ports to the 2600 (Hunchback, Aztec Challenge). No Soccer either. :P Didn't vote for the standard, single-screen shooter (Bandits).

Now, removed on the merits:

Fort Apocalpyse. Played on the A8, is so-so.

Hover Bovver. Kind of amusing in a Preppie kind of way. Not a great game though.

Oils Well. Never really had a lot of love for these kind of games. Haven't played the C64 version, but the A8 version I've found hard to control and not a lot of fun.

Pharaoh's Curse. Basically Montezuma's Revenge only not as good.

Falcon Patrol. Couldn't find a ROM for this, but looks like a Defender-ish clone.

Now, the yeses:

Archon. Honestly, I think the execution (of a brilliant concept) falls a little short here. I've always found the combat in this game pretty shallow. But the game as a whole is still pretty sweet. :)

Beach-Head. A cool game and would be a unique for the 2600.

Blue Max. If you can pull it off...of course, if you can pull it off, might as well do Zaxxon, unless you like Blue Max better. But considering Desert Falcon, I have my doubts.

Choplifter. I've been advocating porting this for a while now. :D Great game, could be done well, I think, on the 2600.

Gateway to Apshai. I don't think this is a great game, honestly - overcomplicated and a bit slow. But there are very few games on the 2600 like it and simplifying to get port it down might make it great.

Jumpman / Jr., Lode Runner, M.U.L.E. Great games.

Save New York, Super Pipeline. Two games I haven't seen before, but playing them for 5 minutes each just now, they are both fun, unique twists on standard themes.

Forbidden Forest. Ok, tried again and the game is impressively atmospheric. Really, it isn't very playable. But with a little gameplay tweaking could be awesome.

Pharaoh's Curse could very very good. I think it stands on its own against Montezuma's Revenge, which is also excellent. They both make good games.

Choplifter could be fun as well.

And more platformers are welcome. Jumpman Jr. could be great. Hunchy II, Climber 5 (it's 5 isn't it? oh it's late), and Donkey Kong are three of my most played games on the 2600.

And may I add, a version of Bosconian would be most welcome. I love that game, and playing it on a Game Cube or PS2 in Namco Museum 50th Anniv. Ed. just doesn't satisfy.

I apologize for the Bosconian remark (although I'd love to see it). I just realized you are leaving arcade conversions out, and trying computer game conversions instead only.

Pinhead, Preppie II, or Pathfinder from the 800 would also be great to see on the 2600. Other games that start with letters other than P would be welcome too :).

I'd be curious to see what a 2600 version of Gateway to Apshai would look like. Also interesting would be the control scheme

It would use a Joystick in combination with a Star Raiders keypad of course ;)

Of course, you do realize that the value of said keypad on eBay will triple as soon as the game is released... ;) :D

I know we are supposed to ignore 'doableness' but I cannot. I think Choplifter is do-able. It's also my favorite and the only one I voted for...that should make it count twice :D

It's a case of fond memories... Choplifter was just THE game on the Apple II that fateful day we went computer shopping (and my Dad bought a TRS-80 instead)....doesn't matter, I played Choplifter in the store, and I was hooked.

So, splitting the remaining titles ~ in two halfes, these are the 11 finalists (7 votes or better):

  1. Archon [13]
  2. Jumpman / Jr. [13]
  3. Lode Runner [13]
  4. Choplifter [9]
  5. Beach-Head [8]
  6. Forbidden Forest [8]
  7. Dino Eggs [7]
  8. Fort Apocalypse [7]
  9. Gateway to Apshai [7]
  10. M.U.L.E. [7]
  11. Pharaoh's Curse [7]

Amazingly promising selection I'd say, there probably should be 2600 versions for all of them

Lets have a closer look at these next, starting from the bottom, and see which would be the most fun to do :)
