Atariboy
Sadly, the days of classic gaming compilations for consoles are over. I imagine the Wii will be the last stand for them, and its only had a couple of them so far. And as soon as they allow original content to be released as downloads, I suspect they will be a thing of the past there as well.
squiredogs
Well if it's a dying breed, would you: 1 - Keep a 60 gb original PS3 (which I have, but was going to sell to get a quieter-fan 40gig) and hang onto the PS2 comps. 2 - Get the 40 gb PS3 and just play the older PS1 compilations. 3 - Forget it and get an old PS2. I like the wireless controllers on my PS3 - it's the first time I've been able to keep the console in the living room full-time... Nice and clean looking, and out of reach of my 1 year old as well. So I've been liking that aspect of the PS3. It can be noisy when watching a movie on it, so I was toying with getting one of the newer (and supposedly more quiet) 40 giggers. I have about 8 or so PS1 games that would play on either, and 10 or so PS2 games that I would have to give up if I went to the 40. I've been trying to keep less stuff around - I've sold all my vectrexes, Inty's, Colecovisions, PS1 & 2, etc. etc.... (kept the 2600's and the NES though). having a kid takes some storage space! Anyway, it's a shame that the downloads are encroaching on the cool compilations. They're the only PS2 games that I'd miss really.
liveinabin
With the insane power of the PS3, I'd like to see compilations of newer arcade games that never got home-conversions. Things like Scud Race would be great. As for classic games, I think downloading is a far better idea than compilation discs. I'd like to see the downloads each come with a bit of history about the game (like iTunes albums come with liner notes). That'd be a perfect replacement for compilations IMHO. @squiredogs - I have a 40Gb PS3. It's practically silent and doesn't run hot. I have no idea how they managed that in one hardware update but it's incredible.
Atariboy
If you only want a handful of arcade classics that have been redone a dozen times before like Pac-Man, I could see why you'd like downloading games. But I'd much rather be paying $20 for over 20 games that include alot of games that would never see the light of day as a individual download, rather than 4 games I already own several times over for $5 a pop. If anyone wants my 60GB PS3, they'll be prying it out of my cold, dead hands. I would never get rid of a 60GB PS3. It's the most functional of all PS3's. Turn your heat down and keep the 60GB. The fan on mine never even comes on.
MCHufnagel
SNK has just announced a Neo-Geo compilation for the PS2. That will play on the PS3, except for the 40 gig model. http://www.joystiq.com/2008/01/19/snk-retu...ilation-for-ps/
jboypacman
Ok this NeoGeo collection should be quite cool i think.
bdog_147
Ok this NeoGeo collection should be quite cool i think. I hope they port this to the wii. As my ps2 doesn't seem to like the new ps2 releases (they won't play).
Zap!
Any updates on classic compilations on the PS3? I know of last week's Sonic's Ultimate Sega Genesis Collection, but that's it.
moycon
Any updates on classic compilations on the PS3? I know of last week's Sonic's Ultimate Sega Genesis Collection, but that's it. Considering folks in this very thread stated.... "the days of classic gaming compilations for consoles are over.", I'd say SUSGC is a good start! Seriously though, I haven't heard of any others not mentioned in this thread, so that start...might be a finish also.
HammR25
I'm surprised Namco hasn't released a compilation for the PS3. They're good at rehashing the same games over and over and over again. They actually released all of their X-Box Live titles along with a bunch of other titles on a disc so they've essentially done both the download and disc thing, just not for the PS3. Seob
Best is to play the games just on the original hardware, so you never have any trouble. Look at ms they don't have a full bc on their 360. I have the 60gb version and when watching a blu-ray it get's noisy but never so much as my 360 will make just running idle. @squiredogs - I have a 40Gb PS3. It's practically silent and doesn't run hot. I have no idea how they managed that in one hardware update but it's incredible. Maybe ms should be asking sony how they did it
Atariboy
I think I might've been premature in calling classic compilations dead, we've seen two nice ones in recent weeks for the Xbox 360. The XBLA/PSN route for classic arcade releases seems to have died out thankfully, so hopefully we'll see more companies return to produce arcade collections.
