vdub_bobby
Anyone who wants to learn a ton about enemy AI programming should go read the Gauntlet thread in the 8-bit forum. The thread started off as a discussion of an old freeware/shareware game called Gauntlet (it's a 2D shooter, written before the more famous Gauntlet was released ) and then the original programmer showed up and has posted a ton of very interesting (and technical) stuff about how he wrote the game. Gauntletak (renamed, obviously) has some very impressive AI for the enemies. Incredibly cool thread. And, one of the 50 (only!) people that bought the full version also showed up and dug up his copy and got a dump to atarimania.com. Definitely worth checking out! The author's description of the game from an interview that he pasted into the thread: It's a 2D shooter where you control a spaceship that can fire in eight directions and accelerate in any direction. You face a number of enemy ship types and each one is different. They are smart, use different tactics, and even know how to team up against you. The terrain is completely destructable and changes during the course of the battle. Your goal is to fight through 50 screens of defenders and kill the final boss at the end. I remember playing the freeware version when I was a kid. Edited January 25, 2008 by vdub_bobby
