zombiecraig
Any fans of this game? I've never really played it and I'm just curious if it is worth tracking down? Also, what is the best version? I am aware of ColecoVision, Atari 2600 & 5200 and Sega Master System versions. I'm sure there a numerous classic computer versions, as well. I also recall a remake or sequel of sorts for Game Boy or Game Boy Color. I used to see ads for this in comic books back in the 80s and it always seemed pretty interesting. I was actually reading some old comics recently and ran across the old ad which reminded me of the game. It doesn't see that you ever hear too much about it. Was it a bust? Or just a forgotten gem? joeybastard
Montezuma's Revenge is a great game. I have it on the CV, 5200 and GBC with my fav being the CV version. The GBC version has updated graphics and new bad guys but it's also painfully difficult. The CV and 5200 versions are pretty much the same but I like the CV super action sticks so it gets my nod over the 5200. I have never played the SMS one but I'd like to pick it up some day. Ransom
Personally, I've always liked the Apple ][ version best.
tyranthraxus
Its a really good platformer. I presently own and recommend the Colecovision version but I first played it on the Commodore 64.
doubledown
One of my all time favorites. I played it as a kid on my cousin's C64 untill I got my own and then could play it at home. I've had the 5200 version and still have the CV and SMS versions. I play the CV version all the time, but like the SMS version a little more. jboypacman
Love this game! I own it for the 2600 and the Sega Master System. Its a great platformer no matter what system you have it for.
Ze_ro
I prefer the C64 version myself... though the ColecoVision and Atari 5200 (and I assume, Atari 8-bit) versions are pretty much the same. You can't go wrong with this game, even the 2600 version is quite well done. --Zero
NE146
I grew up with the 5200 version and have always loved it. I could get to level 9 back in the day with no problem. However in recent years I'm getting interested in trying out and playing through the Atari 8-bit version (probably through emulation) since apparently there's some "Boss" or mummy type obstacle that I don't believe isn't in the 5200 version. You can see it in this map on the bottom left Edited April 1, 2008 by NE146
zombiecraig
Well, I won the Sega Master System version off of eBay for $10.50 complete in box earlier. Everyone seems to like this game, so I'm hoping for the best.
Shannon
I've gotten to the monster before (way long time ago).. Anyways Monte is a nifty little game. The controls can be a little iffy in some places but it doesn't ruin the experience. You just have to learn to be a little extra cautious in certain circumstances. Ze_ro
I've gotten to the monster before (way long time ago).. So... what happens? I had no idea this was even in the game. Is this where you're supposed to be going, or is this just some obstacle to avoid or something? --Zero
Shannon
I'm not 100% certain, there is an old thread around here somewhere that discusses it. But I believe the version he is playing is technically a prototype (aka incomplete) and the monster was eventually removed. I believe it is impossible to complete as well, but still it's worth playing thru just to get there. I don't want to reveal it lest I ruin the fun for Ne1.. panamajoe
Montezuma´s Revenge is a great game. The VCS version is just great, one of the best games for the system... But Montezumas has to be played on an Atari XL

Reaperman
well thanks... Reminding me of it only puts that happy little theme song into back into my head... So I've liked that game (a800 version) since I was a little guy, but for some reason, I've never been *any* good at it. The worst part, is that I don't have any reason why. Individual rooms seem easy enough, but the game as a whole has always left me cursing at the screen. I think I'm going to play it again tonight though. This thread has had me looking at a few youtube videos, and I think I know how to at least get deeper than ever before.
Shannon
It'd be interesting to interview the programmer of this and find out what his intentions were (regarding the big baddie) and why it was removed, etc.
Colecovision
I played this years ago on Colecovision and it was great for it's time but the SMS version is better. Improved graphics and the control pad make a big difference. I don't really mind the graphics but SMS controls are more tight and it's very important in this game. DracIsBack
Love this game. I actually played in on the PC (in all its CGA glory) originally but recently picked it up for the 8-bit Atari and am loving it
gklinger
It's my favourite game of all time. The SMS version is the best graphically but I prefer the 64 version (I probably shouldn't say that here) because it was the first one I played. Regardless of what version you play, you'll enjoy it. Rybags
The Atari 8-bit version is best. As for the variants - sadly I can't vouch for any. If the game was produced the way it was intended, it would have retained the features of the leaked original. The cut-down final version was a huge let-down. As I recall wasn't there two different Atari 8-bit computer versions? One was a disk release (possibly a crack of an prototype) and the other was a cartridge version? Go ahead and ruin away You gotta realize my personality type. I'm not one who really cares about that kind of thing For example I'm the kind of guy who doesn't watch movies, but WHEN I do, I often go straight to the end and see what happens, then I work backward to fill in the story. Seriously... Especially for horror movies. Like the last thing I watched was Hostel. The first scene I saw was the end when the guy cut off some other guys fingers. I was like 'aah who is that', then I simply just jammed backwards and watched the gore scenes, got the jist of it, then saw the guy somewhere in the beginning, and that's what i consider "watching Hostel". I was done in 20 minutes and satisfied Oh yeah and Chronicles of Narnia. I just watched that a couple days ago. I started at the end and watched the kids go home, then I watched the battle, then I skipped the rest and voila. Done. It's always the same deal Edited April 3, 2008 by NE146
Shannon
Remind me never to watch a movie with you. Even worse than a person that either... a) Gives away the plot b) Asks questions the whole time. The bad guy just stomps on the ground and you die. That's pretty much it..... Hope you didn't try too hard to get to him.
