Advice on Running Linux on the PS3

Okay, just for the record, I do not yet have a PS3, but am seriously considering getting one by the end of the year.

Anyway, I find it kind of neat that you can run Linux distros on there. I'd most certainly be doing that, so that the apps could make it a kind of all-in-one box for my bedroom.

A few questions:

1) Is it true that Sony is actively encouraging Linux development on the PS3? I know they actually went so far as to make a Linux kit for the PS2, so is this philosophy carrying over? I'm not big on hacking and modding, so if I have to wave a magic chicken bone over my console to get Linux to work, it's not worth it to me.

2) How much HDD space does a typical install take up?

3) What are the best Linux apps for the PS3?

TIA everyone.

Yes Sony is ok with you installing Linux on your PS3 in fact there is a "INSTALL OTHER OS" menu under System Settings.

Sony's Instructions: http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en.../osinstall.html

How much HDD space depends on the distribution you plan on using. I run Ubuntu on my home PC and it can take 3.5 to 5 gigs depending on what apps you choose to install. A remember the PS3 takes a standard laptop HDD, so you can easily and relatively cheaply up you storage space to whatever size you want (I think the biggest laptop drive is 320gb right now).

Best linux apps for PS3? I don't know as I have yet to try out linux on the PS3 but I imagine emulators would be cool. Stella is available for linux as is MAME, NES emulators, etc. Here is a list of some linux apps I use on my PC that I enjoy.

Open Office, VLC, Gimp, firestarter, emacs, mythtv, azureus, picasa, firefox. opera, k3b, k9copy, wine, blender, scribus, pidgin, amazon mp3 downloader, amarok, gourmet recipe manager, amaya, audacity, the list goes on.....

Now some of those may not work on the ps3 due to no dvd burner etc but I imagine you could do just about anything as long as you have a keyboard and mouse. You may also have a bit of trouble getting the wifi to work (linux is still not great in that area) but I could be wrong.

And why would you want to run linux on it you ask? Because we can of course. :D

I think it is something like 20/60 or 60/20 depending on which way you want to go. 20/80, 80/20 on the 80 gig. Or something like that. About all Sony did (support wise) is give you the ability to install different distrubutions of linux as you see fit. Personally I think it is a waste, it runs slow because it runs under the hypervisor or whatever that thing is and there is no accelerated 3d video or something like that. Basically crippled.

Outside of recompiling mame on it I have not really used it. It's possible though that people have come further along with it. I know alot of people were working on making it a media machine (for video playback, etc). Not sure how far along they've gotten.

At the time I installed the "officially supported" version. Blue something. Anyways they had a typo in that release that you had to correct if you wanted to use the app that let you download pre-compiled applications. From my experience you were better off recompiling anyways because the sound in alot of stuff was usually off. I'm mostly referring to emu's.

As for applications, Yellow Dog brings Open Office, MPlayer and GIMP among others which is very cool.

By the way, can you install DOS in the PS3? Can you boot from a memory card as well? DOS emulators are usually easier to install and faster than Linux ones that's why I prefer them.
