Best atari 2600 model ?

Recommended Posts

Well based on my personal experience with the VCS consoles I own, I'll give my vote to the Atari 2600A rev2 (Darth Vader).

Here are some of the reasons:

1) It looks cool, modern with attitude, it has the 2600 logo at the front.

2) All carts fit perfect.

3) It's built to last, not as strong as the earlier models but still it will probably take more abuse than the Jr. models.

4) The joystick ports are located more visible in the upper side of the back panel, unlike the earlier 6 switch models that were located in the lower part of the back panel.

5) Nice picture quality, after you replace the old worn out RF cable you can get a clean picture.

6) Even if it's the same size as the earlier VCS models it weights less.

7) Those were the last big-size models built, usually they're in better conditions than the earlier models. Chances are that most Vader models out there still work fine, unlike the earlier models wich had more years on the battlefield.

The only VCS console I've had that I think it kicks the original models right where the sun don't shine it's my Jr.clone with 64 games built in, small, light, It can display a clean picture, lots of games at your fingertips without the hassle of pluggin'in carts, It also comes with a cart slot to plug in carts that are not built in and it feels pretty solid, but it won't support paddle controllers and it's not a true Atari so the Vader has the advantage there.

Honorable mention: Heavy Sixer, the woodgrain makes you want to worship the beast but the dust cover flap it's a pain with some carts.

well my fav. 2600 model is ( for now ) my atari Jr clone

with 160 games built in it has also a solid picture, and it is small

and easy to use the two bad things about this model:

the first that it doesn't support paddles ( I don't know why ? )

the second is that I like the heavy old models look...

but look I am playing an old gb games on the game boy advanve and

they look better than they play on the first game boy heavy model ...

if want I can play atari games using my PC that is connectd to the same

tv that the atari Jr is connected to with a real Atari joystick...

but if u really want to live the past I think u need an old Atari model

no built in games, no supercharger games, no multi card games, and

no emulation....

just the machine and a few cards that u used to play as a kid, this

will do the job the best...

well moved out of the subject, sorry. I just want to know what model

to look for because my other two systems drop dead...

The 2600 Jr. I love its sleek black look and best of all its incredibly small

and light weight. I have some affection for the woodgrain models since

the look is just sooo Atari :) I've never seen a vader model but after

reading that post about I am intrigued, however, I love the jr so much

that I am in the process of getting rid of my spare woodgrain models.

Gone through 3 junior models, All went black and white. They really are cheap and nasty. Some carts go too far in to run properly on all my juniors.

The most reliable machines i have are the Darth and the 6 switch. I recomend the darth over the sixer only due to wanting to preserve the 6er.

Not exactly mrVcs, what I meant is that you have to replace the old RF cord with a new one (or one in a very good shape altough while you're at it better replace it with a new one) in order to get a clean picture, sometimes the old RF cable is worn out or marked real bad and it's always a good idea to replace it if you're getting a weak picture (snow), if you see white stripes then your VCS is probably being exposed to RF interference by a "dirty" source that can be caused by a non-shielded RF cable or the source being located too near your VCS setup.

In some areas there might be other RF interference sources to be dealt with like local TV stations or microwave ovens or even "dirty" electronics devices placed near your VCS that can cause bad interference signals.

Something I found that cleans the picture up tremendously is the RCA Co-Axial adapters they can be used for the Atari 2600/Intellivision/Colecovision.

It does away with the old switch adapter and let's you plug straight to the TV...it really, really, cleans up the picture.

here is a link for one on sale on ebay.

thanx for your help Eduardo! The problem is that some games

work fine on the vader and others not.The original Vanguard from 1982 works fine with ciean picture, the re-release from 1988 has an ugly picture. The same withe Missile Command

(1981/1991) and all of the HES re-releases of Activision games.

But untill today I haven´t swichtched the RF cords. Brings the

Junior cable a better picture?

IMHO, most Atari-supplied leads are no good now. Even if they are, maybe try leaving them in the box, and get a nice new screened jobby?

Even better, source a cheap console and have it modded to do composite. I'm looking into better quality outputs when I have some spare minutes ;)
