Even though the steering wheel comes packed in with the game, you're not forced to use it. Mario Kart Wii will have full support for playing using the Wii remote exclusively, or the Wii Remote with the Nunchuk, or the Classic Controller, or even a GameCube controller.

Yay! I am glad they are including options for all controller types, great move Nintendo.

That item alone pushes this game from a probably want to a must want for me. I don't expect much more than what we saw on the Gamecube, but the Gamecube game still gets play time in my house, so even a GC Mario Kart 1.5 is a good thing in my book.

I'm so far behind on Mario-related games. I'm kind of embarassed to admit it, but I think I might be a bigger fan of Nintendo's franchises than I always thought. Sure, I had an NES and SNES growing up, but after that no more Nintendo. It was PS1, XBOX, XBOX360, PS2, and PS3 all the way. My sister had a N64 and GCN but I rarely, if ever, used them.

Lately I've found myself very interested in some of Nintendo's games. I've been playing for pretty much the first time Mario 64 and Super Smash Brothers (the N64 version).

Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Brothers Brawl look amazing but I need to play Super Mario Kart, Mario Kart 64, and Mario Kart Double Dash!! before Mario Kart Wii. I still need to play Super Smash Brothers Melee as well.

Most of my games are 200 miles away since it's not feasible for me to haul all my old systems to and from college so I only get to play ever couple of weekends. I don't think I'll ever catch up. I've still got to play Super Mario Sunshine and Galaxy as well. Then you've got all the sports spin-offs - Mario Tennis, Golf, Baseball, etc.

All that and that just gets me past Mario. I've never played a single Metroid game, but looking over Metroid-related stuff (NES version first) has me interested. Then there's Contra. I've never played any of those either.

If you're a Mario fan like me you've probably been looking around for Mario Kart for the WII and noticed it's almost impossible to find. Well, if you live in New Hampshire, visit Best Buy in Concord, NH. The wife and I went there tonight and were pleasantly surprised to see 7 copies for sale. We picked one up (we've been after one since launch) so there's 6 left as of right now 9:06pm EST. I wanted to share this good news with my fellow gamers!

It sure beats trying to buy one off Fleebay; the last Mario Kart for Wii on EBay ended at $100 which is absolutely ridiculous!

I had no troubles buying one at launch and see them in the electronics section of every store I visit.

Wasn't aware there was a shortage?

There seems to be in New Hampshire for some reason. Just about every single damn game store has been sold out since launch. :|

I took out Super Mario Galaxy and put in Mario Kart Wii and I get a message saying I unlocked her for play in Mario Kart Wii, which is weird because I did that before and nothing happened. So, who else can you unlock in Mario Kart Wii using different games, or is that it?

Does anyone know why Mario Kart Wii is in short supply?

My neighbor has been looking for a copy for a couple weeks and had tried Target, Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy with no luck. Even Amazon didn't have them in stock until just a few days ago. And now my neighbor got a flyer from GameStop on Friday that says "Mario Kart Wii Now In Stock; Limited Quanities".

This is the first time I've heard of a game, other than WiiFit, being hard to find. Anyone know why?

It's the wheel. I didn't think about it when I first went looking for my copy, but that hunk of plastic complicates the supply chain and reduces the number of units that can be manufactured in a given period of time. (DVDs are cheap and easy to press in incredible quantities. Molded plastic wheels that require some assembly are not.) Combine the high demand for Wiis with a high demand for Mario Kart Wii and you've got a recipe for MK:Wii shortages.

Obviously the shortages are nowhere near as bad as Wii shortages, but it may be somewhat troublesome to find MK:Wii. The good news is now that the shelves are well saturated with separately sold Wii Wheels, Nintendo can shunt more of the Wii Wheel production into making more MK:Wii copies.

I think you'll find that shortages are a matter of course for any high-demand Wii hardware. Wii Fit is another common example of hardware that is nearly impossible to find due to the incredible demand.

Actually I haven't found Mario Kart Wii to be in short supply down this way at all. Every time I go into the store, there's at least a handful of copies available for purchase. Although I do admit there are far fewer copies available now than when it launched (on launch day, the local Walmart store had 20 or so copies available).

On top of that, the game really is an excellent installment in the Mario Kart series. Also, the online play is actually very decent, and I'm even able to play without lag over dialup, so that's saying something.

Walmart and Target always stuff the oversized game boxes in the cubby space at the bottom of the display case. Many times they'll get pushed back behind other overflow stuff. If you get a lazy employee, they'll just glance at the front and not look in the back of the cubby. If that happens, ask to speak to the department manager and have them look in the cubby. I've gotten many sales drones in trouble after the manager finds something that was 'out of stock.'

I am resurrecting this thread because I am still totally addicted to racing online. I even joined a group to race with, which is something totally geeky that I never do. They are all non-cheating adults, so that helps. There are so many cheats and exploits now that can really ruin the game these days.

Anyway, I had a bit of a personal highlight earlier when I got to 8000 in my online VR ranking. This is the highest ever for me. Went right back to 7500 in a hurry, though. If anyone else is still playing, I am on all the time. Still playing with the Wii wheel.
