Atari2600Lives
Anyone try one of these yet? I am actually thinking of getting a pocket pc for portable gaming... Atari2600Lives
joshk
I installed the emulator on one of the Ipaqs at work and it worked good. The controls are alittle weird. Someone may make a joystick for the Pocket PC, but not sure
feo
Emulator in general can be a bit tricky, but once you get used to them they work well. The main feature I like about PocketVCS is that you can drag the stylus at the bottom of the screen to simulate a paddle. So Kaboom plays REALLY good. By default some of the games run very fast, but you can adjust the setting for that specific rom and save it along with your customized controller setup and other settings with the cart profile. PocketVCS has a bunch of stuff that you can customize, you can carry a bunch of roms with you and play them anytime you have a few minutes, like when you are waiting on line somewhere. at a restaurant or at the movie theater before the show starts. Although I have a bunch of roms, I am always playing prettymuch the same one (Kaboom), just can't get over that game right now.

Cap5750
You can get the sdk for the Pocket PC for free from Microsoft which includes an emulator. Also, they have available, something called the embedded Visual Tools (presuming a scaled version of Basic and C++). It's all so that you can develop stuff for the PPC. Did I mention that it was Microsoft and that it was free? How 'bout that! Cap

mos6507
How fast is it really? Can it play Solaris at a full 60fps on today's Pocket PCs?
feo
I haven't actually tried Solaris, but I can tell you that some of the games when you set the emulator to top speed, they are unplayable because everything happens too fast. I have an iPaq 3670 with PPC 2000. The way it works, you load your rom, then you go to the controller configuration screens, you pick your controller, and then you map the buttons on the controller to the buttons of the unit. One of the problems the iPaq has (I don't know about others) is that you can not do two buttons at once. So if you wanted to do a diagonal with the navigation pad, it is not going to work. I don't know if that issue has been fixed on the newer 38xx's and 39xx's. If Solaris requires use of multiple buttons at once, then it doesn't matter how fast it goes, it will be harder. An alternative to that though would probably be one of the gamepad attachements that I have seen come out. I saw one for the 36xx's / 37xx's and another one for the newer iPaq models. It makes your iPaq look kind of like a gameboy on steroids. But as I said, that I haven't tried them (yet...)
mstulir
I saw a REALLY cool emulator running on a Compaq iPaq last year. Here is a brief story... Does everyone know who Larry Bank is? He used to do the HiVE arcade emulator. I had him as a guest on my webcast quite some time ago, and one of the topics we discussed was using Windows CE as a platform for portable arcade emulators. Flash forward to E3 in 2001. I'm in the Capcom booth speaking with Conway Ho & Richard Ragon from HanaHo. They tell me that Larry Bank is attending E3 and that he wants to talk to me. When Larry shows up, he pulls out his iPaq and shows me an arcade emulator running Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man & DigDug. Larry proceeds to tell me about this Microsoft executive who heard my webcast, and was fascinated by our conversation on classic gaming & Windows CE. That guy contacted Larry, and they started talking. After a while, Micorsoft offered Larry some contract work, which resulted in this emulator. Here is a link to it on Microsoft's site. It is called the Arcade Pocket Pack. http://order.microsoft.upgrade.com/pocketpc/ Larry has also coded some other arcade emulators for the Pocket PC platform. Although I have not seen it personally, I have heard that his 1942 emulator is very good. http://www.hanaho.com/products/PDASoftware...e/PDA/1942.html Personally, I am looking forward to seeing more emulation projects for Windows CE & the Pocket PC platform. I think it would be very cool to have some classic games in a portable format.
