zombiecraig
I seem to recall reading something at one point where Xbox controllers could be used on PCs for gaming. Now, I just read mention in another topic about 360 controllers working with PCs. Does anyone around here do this? I was just wondering how well this works, reliability-wise. Anyone ever have issues doing this? I'll do some Googling, but if someone can point me to the best method here, I would certainly appreciate it. moycon
http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Wireless-Gaming...6899&sr=8-4 I have one but haven't used it yet. Not sure why, just never got around to it. You can read the user reviews for comments on how and what they use it for. Most reviewers love it.
2600Lives
I use my 360 controller all the time on my pc, especially when I'm playing an emulator. It works great. Literally, just plug it in and it's ready, or if you comp needs the drivers, just go to the Microsoft home page and get 'em. Easy peasy. jbanes
Microsoft intended that the 360 controller could be used either on the 360 console or on the PC. This provided Microsoft with a controller standard when they created their "Windows Games" branding. As far as I know, they work quite well on the PC. Another console that's interesting is the Wii. All you need is a Bluetooth adapter and a free program called "GlovePIE". You can then write scripts to communicate Wii Remote events as keyboard, mouse, and even game controller commands. I've hacked a few scripts before. One was a script for WiiCade games that included support for the sensor bar. (The Datel guys didn't do a very good job with the script they included in the Mii Manager package. They used the acceleration mouse rather than the sensor bar mouse. ) Another was a script that allowed two players to play MAME titles using Wii Remotes on their sides. My kids and I used that script to play one of my favorite arcade shmups: Sky Soldiers. You can also get access to the Wii Remote peripherals like the Classic Controller, the Nunchuk, the Guitar Hero guitar, the balance board, and just about everything else that could possibly attach to or replace a Wii Remote. Interestingly, the PS3 controller is also Bluetooth. Unfortunately, I have yet to hear about anyone hacking them for use on the PC. I can only assume that such projects exist, but I'm afraid I can't be any more helpful than that. (I imagine there's a lack of interest in the controller.) warmachine
I use an original xbox controller to play trackmania united. I had to make a dongle from a breakout cable, so I could plug it into a usb port. It was totally worth it, cause I just couldn't get past certian tracks while using the keyboard. I bought a wireless 360 controller with the play and charge kit from slea-z pawn a while back for $15.00. It looked like someone had wiped their ass with it after eating at a mexican restraunt. I took it apart and cleaned it up and tried to find a driver for it, and bam! It won't work because microsoft want's me to pay $35.00 for a wireless receiver. Well, screw the 360 and it's non HID compliant wireless controller, and screw microsoft for their nickle and diming ways. I'll just stick to using my original xbox controller. Maybe it's better that way. Edited July 31, 2008 by warmachine

Anyway, you can find the driver here: http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/gaming/download.mspx Just select your specifications from the drop-down boxes and it should reward you with the appropriate driver. I haven't checked it out yet, but it should work. I've been content with a simple PS style, sans analog, PC controller for a long time, but maybe it's time to upgrade. Edit: I was expecting it, but I just wanted to confirm that you do, in fact, need a wired controller or a wireless receiver. To be absolutely clear, the link above is only for those with wired 360 controllers or the money to spend on a wireless receiver (below.) Rybags
I've got one of those USB adaptors that allows two Playstation controllers. Works fine with my analog controllers - no idea if it takes others like the steering wheel.

No problem I just don't see why I need to use that wireless receiver. The cable on the usb charger is plenty long enough to reach my pc that is a couple of feet away and I don't really care about the wireless functionallity. Why can't microsoft just write a driver for it? Windows asks for a driver when I plug the controller in, so I know that the controllers using more than just the +5v and ground signals from the usb port. Oh well, The original xbox s-controller works great. It's one of the best controllers I've ever used... with the exception of the placement of those damned black and white buttons. Ze_ro
It's worth mentioning that a lot of recent PC releases (especially those that also appear on the 360) have specific support for the 360 controllers, so you end up with the same button mappings as you would if you were playing on a console. It would really be nice to see this become a standard controller for the PC world... having to remap everything in every game sucks moose balls. --Zero
PixelatedNights
I agree Zero that would actually be a fantastic idea
