Previous 7800 HSC Rounds

I played a few quick games, and found out I have a very short time to snap a picture! I guess I could snap one on my last guy with pause, but when I die I almost can't fire my camera up before it goes back to the title screen.

This is a great game! It was one of my favorites, one I was really sad to see go when I sold my 7800 collection. Well I picked up a 7800 a few weeks ago, and I've got a few games now, this is one of them.

Here's my best score after about 15 goes at it. Expert is a little more challenging!

Hints and Tips

From the book:

A wood results in a poor shot from a deep rough or sand trap. Use an iron.

Make sure not to overswing. An overswing almost certainly results in a poor shot.

Each shot's trajectory is a combination of your swing and luck. When the ball hits the ground, it randomly bounces left or right.

When hitting from different terrains, use a bigger club than normal to achieve the same distance. (Light rough, one club, deep rough and sand, two or three clubs.)

I'll re run the losers after three or four weeks. If there are two games in the list you'd like to play, let me know in a post and if there's enough support for a paritcular game, it'll ebe in the following week's pool again. If it's nearly unanimous, I'll run the game that following week without a vote. That's how Mean 18 ended up in the last poll.

Say we vote in Galaga this week, if everyone wants to do Desert Falcon next (or almost everyone), we'll jump straight into Desert Falcon once Galaga is over.

Bold and beautiful. And deadly. Invaders fight you to the death. Best them in combat, and they allow you to shoot back without retaliation for a minute. Nobody said this would be easy, but your orders this week are to take control of our last flight of Command Ships to fend off hordes of aliens from the planet Galaga!

Game Information:

This week's game: Namco's Galaga

Controllers supported: ProLine Joystick, CX-40

Difficulty Switches: n/a

Game Mode: One player expert

Scores may be posted in this thread until December 6th at approximately 10 PM Central Time.

Next week's game will be chosen by popular vote from the following: Asteroids, Desert Falcon, Ms Pac Man, and Commando. Simply vote in the poll for next week's game.

Note that the voting system has changed. Each week, the game that got the most votes will be played, but will be dropped from the following week's poll. The second and third place games will roll over to next week's poll, and the last place game will drop out.

Hints and Tips

From the book:

Try a few games at the novice level when you're first learning Galaga. This will help you develop skill and strategy (as if we need a review after 20 years of playing).

When Galagan flagships are hit the first time, they turn blue. When they are hit the second time, they explode.

Galagan flagships deploy blue macro beams that can capture your Command ship. To rescue the hostage, hit the flagship only, or you will destroy your own ship as well. Once you regain your ship, you will have two ships, moving and firing in sync, to attack with.

When a Galagan flagship is destroyed in flight, the rest of the fleet stops firing for a few seconds of mourning. Move in quickly to blast the Escorts before they can retaliate.

After two waves of attack, and then after every third wave, you face a challenging stage. Five groups of eight ships fly in various attack patterns.Shoot as many ships as you can before the ships leave. Hit all 40 ships for 10,000 bonus points.

Always have a strategical escape planned to avoid patterns of enemy missile attacks. Scan the screen and think fast to outsmart the Galagan fleet.

Hitting a flagship that's accompanied in flight by one escort scores you a cool 800 points. Nailing a flagship that's accompanied in flight by two escorts scores you 1600 points.

72770 here. I was using my Epyx 500xj. That was my first try at expert. I usually start with novice. What are the rules? Can we post a score later in the week?

Remember, I bought 7800 just to get Galaga :lust: when I have all the 8bit stuff sitting around.

Yes, you may post as many scores as you like this week. You can also post strategy, too.

As for other rules, really, you just play the game on its 7800 cart with whatever controller you prefer (the compatibility list is there only for reference).

Those who don't have or don't use the cart are able to play on a multicart (such as the Cuttle Cart 2) or emulator (such as ProSystem EMU or MESS).

This HSC isn't quite as advanced as the 2600 one. Other than that, the biggest difference is how the games are selected.
