PSP hacking

Ok, I was going to do this about a year ago and never had the time to. Now I have some time this week and wanna set up my PSP to play emu's, media apps if there are some, and maybe play games from a memory stick (though I don't care about that too much). So a few questions:

1. Quickest, simplist way to add whatever custom firmware I need. Got a phat style PSP, what firmware and where to get it?

2. need to know where to grab emu's and if someone could, give me a rundown of what other apps there are and what they do.

3. Can I still use it with my PS3 if I have custom firmware?

I feel way too far behind the PSP scene to really get where I should start and am really too lazy to search for this info. Just get me started and I'll be good.

I'd like to know too, for whatever that's worth :) Had a play with a hacked PSP a few weeks back. Pretty impressive though I'm really liking the was Sony have really worked on the PSP-PS3 symbiosis. Wouldn't really want to lose that.

i had my phat PSP for a year, and it went mostly unused...then i got bored one day and looked into the custom firmware and emulators and play it all the time. when downgrading and then installing the CFW follow the instructions to the letter and you should be okay. i guess any PSP can be un-bricked now.

i got most of my info from psp-hacks.com but i have seen emulator packs on Demonoid and other torrent sites.

What firmware is the psp running now? After we know that we can let you know the best way to proceed.

And no you do not lose any of the cool little ps3 functions. I'm running M-33 4.01 and have all the features of the current firmware.

-T :)

Either PSP will run emulators. With the Slim, some homebrew requires you to install a small ipl to the memory stick, have several official firmwares on the memory stick, and use a JigKick battery to boot up. Once you get everything installed, it's as easy as holding square, triangle, etc. to choose what firmware to boot with. I've read that some Slim batteries can be converted to JigKick. I haven't tried it, since the darn things are so hard to find in the wild.

Phat is easy to downgrade without the Pandora Battery kit, but you need specific games AND to have firmware earlier than 3.51. The Pandora Battery kit is a little easier, though.

I've got a JigKick battery, PM me if you need to borrow it. There is a wait, though...

To my knowledge, the only games that will help you downgrade are the non GH Lumines (some GH versions work, too) and the version of GTA: Liberty City Stories with the 2.00 firmware update on it.

Do you know which motherboard you have? If you open the UMD door, you will see some letters and numbers near the top of the circuit board. I think -- hang on, my Phat's a ta-082... it has a marking that says IC1003 almost right directly underneath where the UMD logo is on the drive door. If yours is a different board, have a look here for more info.

Oh, I forgot to mention, yes it is still possible to brick your PSP, the battery, and the memstick to the point where they can't be recovered, although it's a LOT harder to do. Jack with the NAND or forget to back it up and you'll see what I mean. I've had semi bricks on the memsticks before, and I've bricked a Stamina Pack, no, bump that, I nearly blew up the Stamina Pack! :skull:

Joy, now I get to go through the process of updating my phat PSP...it's easier to boot homebrew, but it's a pain in the neck to update.

mine is also an IC1003.

I bought it just before the slim came out, I was really pissed when I found out about the slim because I wanted the tv output :( Maybe I will get the bright...

Well if this video is right, it looks like you can very easily hack any psp with any version of firmware for about $40.00.

And it looks pretty damn easy.

Doing a search on google seems to confirm this works.

It also looks like it fixes any bricked psp.

The thing is, though, that there are still PSPs out there that have firmwares earlier than 3.51. Those users can update with a game they might already own, and save the expense of the JigKick battery. Such updates can run from the user's memory stick.

With 3.51 and up, you'll need the Pandora Battery setup, though. Once you hit 3.90, you can change all your batteries to Pandora and still be able to run normally unless the magic memstick is inserted before you boot the PSP.
