Can a system kill a monitor/TV?

I'm wondering if my 800XL is a TV/monitor killer. Last night I pulled it out and hooked it up to a TV through the AV connector to see if I could get it to work. Nothing but garbage appears on the screen once the system is turned on. I had also tried it on my Commodore 1702 monitor, and it had the same problem. Looks like it's a bad 800XL.

However...I then tried hooking up my XEGS to both the TV and the monitor. The TV now has no audio at all, and the monitor has audio, but no video. I find it more than coincidental that both of these would die at the same time. Has anyone else ever seen an issue like this? Not only am I out of what was once a perfectly good 800XL, but now I have two displays that are broken...

In general, its difficult for the computer to kill a monitor/tv, more so the other way around.

Something inside would have to break sending voltages much higher than expected thru the cable(includes shorting the signal to ground rapidly creating a voltage spike). This is kinda of possible with the A8 power supply, but tends to kill the a8 first. But, much easier for the monitor to do that.

How old is the TV? I'd suspect possibly solder joint problems on the connector on either/both.

As dmlloyd asked, you tried other video cables, right?

a8maestro, the video cable I used is the one I had bought from you earlier that day. Although I did try hooking up my XEGS with standard composite cables to both the TV and monitor, which is how I figured out that the sound was dead on the TV and the video on the monitor. Either way, the 800XL appears to not work at all, and despite the fact that it probably didn't kill either the TV or monitor, I'm afraid to try hooking it up to another TV regardless.

The TV was manufactured in 1992, so it's quite possible it could be an issue with the solder joint on the connector.
