moycon
[rant] I don't get it. I loved the PS1....I loved the PS2.... The PS3?? This system is the worst ever in some ways, especially for the price paid. I'm no fan boy, I've got just about every system ever made but guys.....come on. I just sat and waited 15...maybe 20 minutes for an update to play PAIN. I didn't request any extras, I didnt purchase any content.... PAIN is a $10 you can buy from the Sony store. I already paid like $1.00 extra to play with the big boobed cheerleader, so that's $11 invested. I'm done paying or investing time or cash in PAIN other than to play THE G*DDAMN GAME!!! I've paid my dues. OK!!!??? Still.... Why now, months after I paid for the game (on a $600 "state of the art" system), do I have to wait even 2 minutes to f*cking play the game, much less 20 minutes!??? All I wanted was to show my girlfriends sister the joy of PAIN. It's a simple but very fun game....( I guess now it's great fun only if you don't mind twiddleing your thumbs for 20 minutes while you wait for a G*D DAMN update on the Sony network.) This is what we get after Sony waited an extra year to make sure all us video game players got the best of the best?? I can't express my feeling for this hulking shiney black Blu-Ray playe..... I mean video game system. Sony...excuse me.... Go F*ck yourselves. That said : I played Folklore for the first time tonight and it was pretty damn sweet, Not wait 20 minutes to play $10 PAIN sweet, but really well done. All I can say is I hope Sony is glad they "beat" Toshiba in the HD disk war....Because in the end, that's all that's going to matter I'm sure. And no...I wont sell it (even though it would be the wise choice) because A.) I'm a collector and B.) I bought a crapload of Blu-Ray disks. How sad is that. Not trying to bring the PS3 forum down...but damn I'm pissed. [/end rant]
2600Lives
Things like this is why piracy exists. People fed UP with terrible service, corporate bullshit, and bean counters pushing crap down their throats, so they take matters into their own hands. Seob
Just because 1 game gives u trouble it's a bad system??? I only hook up my ps3 to the network when i want so every now and then i update the system, all other time it's not hooked to the internet, since i don't play network games. +jetset
I won't argue you on the PS3. Never played one. BUT, at least (imo) Sony hit a home run with the PSP. I never really wanted one but my wife bought me one and I absolutely love it. Granted mine is modded so that makes it better than the norm, but still....At least Sony did well there. Fen
I don't own one, but I did have to wait on one to update so we could play COD4......almost wish for the old days of regular Nintendo. If the game doesn't work...eject, blow out the imaginary dust, Hold reset 20-30 seconds, insert game, hope for the next gen of games to be faster. moycon
Just because 1 game gives u trouble it's a bad system??? You ever wait 20-25 minutes for a PS3 system update? I have several times. Nothing quite like being in the mood to play some games (any game, not any 1 in particular) and then having to deal with that crap. Consider yourself lucky you don't hook you PS3 up to the internet. I,magine if I'd needed a system update and then a PAIN update. YA!! 50 minutes to play a stupid $10 Sony store game. Actually they have some decent games for sure. Maybe they should have just left the console offline until they got their shit together. If I had a choice of playing a game when I want and playing a game after sitting around watching a little % bar fill up for 20 minutes, I'd choose to just play a game which is maybe why I dont play PS3 all that much. I dont think picking up a controller and wanting to play a quick game is too much to ask of a video game system or an unreasonable request. Especially if it's a $600 system. Sony had an extra year with the PS3 development, maybe they should have gone for 2 or 3 years?
CPUWIZ
You ever wait 20-25 minutes for a PS3 system update? No, never, I have a 10 megabit internet connection at home. Maybe you should get rid of your internet provider, if it takes you that long, hardly Sony's fault.
moycon
Maybe you should get rid of your internet provider, if it takes you that long, hardly Sony's fault. I work for AT&T and have the fast service they offer (at a considerable discount I might add). Why is it it takes my 360 about 5 minutes to do a system update using the same connection? I hardly doubt getting a faster provider is going to help me. I've bitched about Sonys updates before and people have agreed with me. Maybe it's not everyone elses slow high speed internet...maybe you just have a magic PS3. Its probably because I'm used to the speedy 360 updates. I cant says I ever timed a PS3 upgrade, but it sure seems to take a loooong time. Then when you think it's done, it has to install the update. Jeeze. CPUWIZ
Half the time I upgrade mine via USB, maybe that's why it has never really bothered me. Even via wireless internet, it has never taken that long. Weird. EDIT: I think I don't have the latest update, maybe I'll time it.
Seob
Don't know how much time it takes me, but i don't think it takes that long. I do hook my ps3 on to the internet, but not all the time. Just when thy got an update or when i want to try a demo. It is just for safety that it first downloads and installs after the update is downloaded. Imagine what would happen if it updates at the same time as when you are downloading. If the connection gets lost you'll be left with a none functioning console. moycon
If the connection gets lost you'll be left with a none functioning console. I understand the reason for it, it's just disheartning to sit through a long ass download and watch the little line fill up to 100% only to have it reset to 0% and start over while it installs. CPUWIZ
Just for fun, I just downloaded the 2.42 update and it took about 3 minutes for me. Anyone else want to test it? http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/About/Sy....html#update_PC
moycon
Just for fun, I just downloaded the 2.42 update and it took about 3 minutes for me. Unfortunately I dont have my PS3 sitting next to my PC. Its downstairs attached to my HDTV. I guess that's the secret. Don't use the state of the art wireless option on the PS3 that everyone says is a HUGE plus and one of the things that makes the PS3 worth the extra $$$, and instead just download it to your PC , unhook the PS3 carry it upstairs and shoot it over a USB connection...is that how to make it go quicker? Can I just download the update to say an MP3 player and transfer it that way? In any case. Im trying to remember the PS1 and PS2 being so complicated to play and I'm not coming up with anything. Seob
cpuwiz, you're downloading on your pc. Moycon is downloading and installing the update on his ps3. I have to check how long it takes to install and update mine. If you download the update you'll need at least 135 mb disk space so the update is at least 135 mb big. Just check a 360 update is 7mb so that's why it takes the ps3 longer to update then a 360. Microsoft is better at networking since they got a hugh advantage in network experience because of windows. Why the size of the update is so different, i don't know. Maybe it has to do with folding at home or some other menu options, or just because of blu ray updates. Yup, PSP is outta the ballpark. OTOH my sister in law has a PS3 and they seem to like it. She hasn't complained about much except her son breaking the controller. As for me, I've never played a PS3, but I have enjoyed a 360 here and there.

moycon
Often I download it at work, since we have a DS3 connection there. I dont have a stick like that but I do have a Zune that I could use. Provided the PS3 would play nice with the Zune.
CPUWIZ
cpuwiz, you're downloading on your pc. Moycon is downloading and installing the update on his ps3. I understand that, I had already upgraded mine to 2.42, so I couldn't test the download speed on my living room network. I dont have a stick like that but I do have a Zune that I could use. Provided the PS3 would play nice with the Zune. If the Zune shows up on your PC with a drive letter and uses FAT32, it will work.
CPUWIZ
I think I figured it out, PSN is probably getting hammered with demo downloads and is really slow. I set a couple of demos downloading and the second one is still downloading (been going for almost 2 hours), it never takes this long for me. I even did a speed test in the browser, it's not my connection, its the PSN.
Breakpack
Maybe I shouldn't buy a PS3 this christmas................
moycon
Maybe I shouldn't buy a PS3 this christmas................ I honestly don't use my PS3 but every now and again. I'll admit it has some decent exclusive games though. Eye of Judgement Uncharted Folklore Heavenly Sword Metal Gear (I haven't played this game myself but I heard it's good) My rant about the load times was fueled by the fact this is around the 4th time I've wanted to just play a damn game and had to wait what SEEMED like forever to do it. My impatience might have been fueled by beer though. I set a couple of demos downloading and the second one is still downloading (been going for almost 2 hours), it never takes this long for me. I even did a speed test in the browser, it's not my connection, its the PSN. See so I'm not crazy. The crap of it is, it was like 2am when we were messing with it. I don't think the PS network was getting hammered at 2am, I think it's just broke. Edited September 15, 2008 by moycon
EricDeLee
I never really understand why people are really pissed because an update takes a while. Honestly, I know that I will sit there for hours playing COD4... to wait 10 minutes for an update isn't too bad. That way, you have time to fill a cooler with ice, water and salt... then throw a 6 pack of Magic Hat #9 in there. Plenty of extra time to kick the dog, check the mail, or whatever. No big deal to me. PSP... kicks ass.. just don't play it as much as the PS3 anymore. Which is sad. Although, I did take it on a few trips I had recently for work. GOD of War is great! So is playing Thrust and other Atari 2600 gems!
moycon
I never really understand why people are really pissed because an update takes a while. I guess I've been spoiled by the 360.... that and I expect more from a videogame system that costs a lot more than it's competitors and loudly publicly has claimed it’s worth every penny because it’s the best of the best maybe? If I have to wait 20 minutes to play a $10 arcade game, that’s not only NOT the best of the best…that sucks. CPUWIZ has presented a way to cut down the system update times, but are game updates like PAIN available to update this way as well. (Not that it matters, the Zune isn’t compatible with the PS3 as far as I can tell. So I either have to lug the PS3 upstairs, buy a flash memory or just put up with crap upgrade times. WOW THAT’s THE BEST of THE BEST Let me tell you!! Actually at this point I'm not seething mad or anything. (I was pretty pissed that night probably because I had a 12 pack of beer in me) It just kinda sucks to me is all. In the future I'll just kick off the update and go play Xbox for awhile till it's done I guess. Edited September 15, 2008 by moycon
pmpddytim
I haven't had an update run more than 10min (Game or console) and I have the slowest connection Cox offers. You can always do what I do when I'm waiting on the PS3 or 360 to update.........Play a few min on the the Wii. -T Edited September 15, 2008 by pmpddytim
