Tempest by a hair. It's the speed, and the colors that give it a slight edge for me.

Tempest. Asteroids has the edge in nostalgia, but I played way more Tempest back-in-the-day.

This is close but am going with Tempest but Asteroids is a real close second on this with me.

If only it was asteroids deluxe... It's a better game but Tempest beats original asteroids in all aspects except exposure when it was a new game. It just broke down way too often.
