NES: The REAL Super Mario 2

Recommended Posts

I think SMB2 (USA) gets a bad rap. True, it's a sprite hack, but that wasn't common knowledge back in 1988. To us, at the time, it was Mario 2, plain and simple. The actual origins of the game didn't become widely known until the early 90s, and in the interim, we played the game, and most NES fans liked it. A few, such as myself, liked it a lot. And why not? It's a good game. The fact that it originally starred some guy in a turban doesn't change that, nor does the fact that we can now play the original SMB2j.

I think a lot of gamers have become a bit snarky at knowing how SMB2 came to be. You can say it's not the original Mario 2, because that's a fact... but at least acknowledge that it's a legit Mario game, even if it's an adopted one.

SMB2 ( USA ) had two extra bosses and various features. There was more done to SMB2 ( USA ). Keep in mind that there no development of this game done in USA. Also think of the commercialization of the game that benifited Mario

The Super Mario Super Show

Yoshi's Island Series

Paper Mario

Mario 64

I just adore those Shy-Guys efforts.

Well, Electronic Gaming Monthly did call it out right there in the magazine in the late 80's.. that's actually what made me go out and buy what I thought was the "real" smb2 (luckily where I'm from they sold more Famicom stuff than NES). However of course it turned out to be a chinese bootleg

Let me put it this way.. I DO believe SMB2-US IS in fact "a" Super Mario Bros 2. Heck, it's designed by Shigero Miyamoto (both in Doki and SMB2 form), it's FROM Nintendo. Who else besides them to tell the world what SMB2 is? However, the Jap SMB2 definitely came out first, and definitely was known as "SMB2" way before SMB2-US was a twinkle in shiggy & the US marketing dept's eye. So it's the real one as far as I'm concerned.

So again..

SMB2-US = fantastic game.. one of my favorites. Miyamoto & Nintendo magic all the way. It's "A" official SMB2. But;

SMB2-Jap = Original and thus "the" SMB2 of history.

I would agree to that.

Yes it is. It says so on the label, on the instructions, on the box, on the ads, on the posters....

It's a Mario game.

I am also in agreement. :D

No it's not

Nintendo just replaced the Sprites on DDP change the code..for it to work on the NES & put SMB2 on it

The fact that Nintendo, the company in charge of the cannon of the Mario series, called it SMB2 makes it a Mario game. It may not be an original Mario game but a Mario game none the less. I can understand the debate about SMB USA not being the real SMB2 but to argue that it isn't even part of the Mario bros. series is completely ridiculous!

Uhh.. isn't that what I said? :P I believe that SMB2-Jap is the real one and said so. :)

So... when Bob-ombs show up in SMB3, or Shyguys appear in SMW2 and SMRPG, are we supposed to not consider those to be Mario games, because they contain characters that originated in another series?

The game created from DDP has been shaping the Mario franchise for 20 years now. If we don't consider it a Mario game, how do we reconcile the games that borrow from SMB2 USA? Is Mario's Tennis really a Doki Doki Panic game because it features Birdo?

Like someone else said, Nintendo themselves decided this should be a Mario game. They even went so far as to call it "Mario Madness".

No,no,no,....Diamond Dallas Page from WCW, WWF(E), and TNA was not in Doki Doki Panic. But that would've been sweet. (-_^)

I just sold my pirate cart of this, but you can find another at Famicomworld's forums. If yo uneed a Famicom adapter just PM me and I can hook you up with a nice one not just the ones that come out of NES carts as those get stuck in toasters so much and are hard to get out with damaging them.

You know, guys, this argument has gotten REALLY old.

Like they said in the book Anguished English: "Stop beating a dead horse to death."

Hi guys,

I don't feel that this friendly dispute is getting old, its just expressing our opinion on a controversial issue that will continue to be argued about for the years to come. Gamers & Pros have been talking about this since the 80's

Define the term "real" in relation to this topic and maybe your statement might have some grounds for creditability.

Hasn't this already been defined....

Real = Original. The first one. The actual SMB2 Nintendo made and sold as SMB2 two years earlier, that looks & plays exactly as a sequel to the original SMB, but was deemed that the rest of the world was too stupid to appericiate so they sprite hacked another one of their completely different games to sell to the rest of us under the title of SMB2 two years after the fact.

Well, technically by you in a second...but I was looking for how he defined "real" in this case.

Thanks, that was very elaborate...but I was asking him.
