Fallout 3 Question for PS3 Players

Recommended Posts

Just curious if any PS3 owners are playing Fallout 3 and if so, have you experienced any freezes, problems, etc?

I just started the game and am wandering around Megaton (after leaving the Vault and killing a few Raiders in the school) and haven't run into any problems so far. But I've read quite a few posts from PS3 players on the official Sony forums that people are experiencing crashes, freezes, and constant problems. The problems supposedly mulitply as your save files get bigger and bigger.

Just curious if anyone here on AA has encountered problems and if the PS3 version is as bugged as reading the official Sony forums would have one believe.

I've experienced numerous episodes of straight up freezing. (usually after quick traveling) And a few episodes of failed texture scaling. meaning the lowest res textures that are supposed to be in the distance--I've walked on those. it looks like a bit like microsoft's flight simulator 5, circa 1993. *but* these problems and many more are not console specific.

the thing that *is* ps3 specific is the lack of AA on the graphics. meaning thin spires in the distance, look very pixelated. But up close at the high resolutions it is pretty hard to notice.

that said, this is an amazing game on ps3, or any hardware, even with its flaws. I don't regret buying the ps3 version for one second, as it's just such an incredible experience.

Thanks for the replies.

As I said, I wasn't sure if the PS3 version was more problematic than the other versions of not. Many posts on the PS Forums complain about problems and I was concerned about getting deep into the game and becoming frustrated with the "glitches" and that maybe I should consider playing the 360 version.

I'm not that far into the game: left the vault, explored Megaton a little, completed the Leaky Pipes quest, made Lvl 3, and am now undertaking another quest where I'm helping Moria with her book: I just arrived and entered the Super Duper Mart (or whatever its called) to search for food and medicine. So far, I've encountered no lock-ups, no freezes, no slow downs, no problems at all. So I'll continue on with this version.

I have much to learn about Fallout: which skills to apply points to, which perks to select, remembering to switch skill enhanced clothes based on the situation, figuring out if given quests are geared to my current level or not, and on and on. Fun game but much to learn.

I experienced one crash while playing this game. I was in Rivet City at the time. It freaked me out because I thought my system was responsible, but then I heard that other people have had similar problems with this game. I'm tempted to buy this game for the 360 instead, but I'm still too pissed off that Microsoft bought exclusive rights for the DLC. I don't want to reward them for doing that by purchasing another copy of the game.

ACK!!! Can you not be a NICE guy in this game??????

I haven't done much naughty at all.. oh, I've stolen a few things and killed a couple people but nothing major. Well, last night I had completed the Radio quest (met Three Dog and repaired the antenna) and while walking around I was jumped by three Merc's who went out of their way to kill me. I barely survived their attack and while looting the corpses, I found that someone has taken out a contract on me simply because I'm a nice guy and that they will pay extra cap's if my HEAD is delivered!!

What the frack is up with this????? Is this the start of a quest??? Or do I now have to watch out constantly for Merc's along with Ghouls and Raiders and Super Mutant's and everything else in the wastes????

Sigh....

Nope, not a quest. From now on you'll run into Talon Company mercs (if you're good) or Brotherhood Paladins (if you're bad) randomly as you travel. At first they seem impossible to kill, but later on they become a good source of money and ammo. Their armor is pretty good too.

Just get used to it, and remember that they'll appear at the WORST possible times. :)

Thanks for the info.

I thought maybe it was the start of a quest to find who put a contract on me and eliminate them.

But these Merc's could become a real pain if they keep frequently showing up..... on my trip to Rivet City (to find Dr. Li to continue the search for my Dad and to find Brian Wilks a home), they jumped me twice. I then found a Talon encampment with 3 Merc's and a robot sentry and loaded up on goodies, thinking maybe I'd seen the last of them for awhile. But then, just as I approached Rivet City, I did battle with some Super Mutants.... and before I could loot the Mutant bodies, some Raiders jumped me... and while battling the Raiders, the Talon boys showed up AGAIN and blew my butt away with a Laser Rifle and Missile Launcher....sigh.

You can kill everyone in Fort Bannister & the mercs will still go after you. It's a scheduled random encounter. Take note, these random encounters can be odd:

1. While once at rivet city, they were snoopin' around, but looking away from me, crouched in a corner near the metro entrance. Strange.

2. One time I fast-traveled to a B&B, and there were raiders & a robobrain(it was pure bedlam). There were ALSO the Mercs, but they were searching the wrong way, and didn't notice all the gunfire behind them.

3. In the downtown area, often they get tied up trying to get rid of supermutants. Let them finish each other off if you can't handle them.

I only once died from them, and that was from an exploding car. Fast traveling typically provokes them to show up from time to time.

Yes, Fast Travel and Talon mercs do seem to be related. I also tended to run into them a lot when exiting various power substation buildings.

As for how hard they are to beat. Depends on so many things, it's impossible to qualify as a matter of fact. It's all a matter of how you play your cards from the minute you left the vault. It's not difficult to be a major tough-ass with lots of money and good weapons/armor by level 3/4, but it usually takes a few play throughs to figure it out.

All I can say is, explore - explore - explore. Money, weapons and ammo are hidden in plain sight. Heck, you can have some really good stuff at level 1 before you even enter Megaton if you know the secrets. There are secrets through out the game.

That and think long and hard about skill upgrades and perks. Some things sound good on the surface, but think about what you are actually doing in the game and how it helps towards that end. In retrospect, I honestly think some of the skill sets and perks are trojan horses there to make people waste their upgrades.

I did a careful study of the perk & skill path and ended up with a pretty awesome character by level 20. Shame I couldn't find enough tumblers today to get to 100 on lockpick, and I didn't bother doing the science book farming to get me to 95(use a +5 suit to get to 100).

Some of the perks just boost your skills 5 or 10 points, where if you find a book in the wild, you get the same effect or use distributed skill points. Those are a waste. To me the best perks were:

1. Animal friend - great for yao gais as they attack baddies, but not you

2. mine sidestep - a great overall perk for exploring lots of Raider camps, etc. You still have to disarm the traps if you are with a companion since they seem to be magnetized to them.

A perk like 'radiation regeneration' seems useless since I can't remember being crippled + almost dead of radiation ever. The "hacker" perk is worthless since you can just exit a terminal before your tries expire. The lockpick one? Same reason(just don't force locks). The one perk I used a couple times was "intense training" so I could get the prereqs up to be able to get mine sidestep + animal friend perk. Makes traversing the wasteland not so rough.

Another of my endless questions:

Just got my first "companion", a super mutant by the name of Fawkes. He is friendly and docile to me but woe to any enemies as he is a real powerhouse and tank as he blasts away anything in sight and takes very little damage.

Question: does traveling with a companion take away experience points from you? In other words, right now I get exp's for killing off enemies in battles.... if Fawkes is with me and killing enemies, does anything he kills still count as exp's for me or is that fewer exp's per battle for me since he is doing away with enemies?

Just curious.

From what I recall you'll have to do the killing or you wont get the EXP.

Fawkes is ALMOST unstoppable. (Although I'll admit I have gotten him killed before, it wasn't easy)

Thanks Moycon!!

I thought I was suddenly getting less exp's since Fawkes joined me but wasn't entirely sure. I may have to "up the difficulty" to compensate for less exp's due to less kills.

Fawkes is certainly better than Dogmeat.... :D

I never took on a companion throughout the game (I left them in town when I was forced to take them). The game was easy enough and I felt that they just got in the way.

The funny thing is when I play Fallout 2 I take the max number of companions because they help out so much. I guess it's just a difference in the game mechanics.

Out of curiosity, Tempest... what difficulty level were you playing at?

I've recently run into Deathclaws and quickly found out that I hate the @#$%^&*'s!!! Having Fawkes with me has made taking them out decidedly easier.

I changed it depending on the situation. When I ran into something that utterly destroyed me I dumbed it down to easy, otherwise I was on medium. I found that this didn't ruin the challenge and made it fun.

Well wait, then doesn't that mean you DIDN'T find it easy enough!? LOL Maybe you should have found a companion!! :P

Just messing with ya.

One thing about Fawkes, he's so big, there was a point in the game when you meet some kids, they have a bunch of indoor structures, and I enter a small room with Fawkes just exploring. I turned around and he was blocking the door!!!I tried to push him, move around and jump around him, I tried to move as far into the corner as I could to get him to move out of the doorway. I even tried to shoot him (Don't shoot Fawkes too many times kids, he gets mad) I couldn't budge him and I was effectively stuck in the room.

Not true really. I can count on one hand the number of times I had to turn down the difficulty, and most of those times were because I was trying to do something way early before I really should have (like going up into minefield and taking out the sniper at level 4).
