Hakuna Matata : AKA Afrika

Got this game today and had a chance to play for a bit (maybe 30 minutes)

My first impressions.

VERY COOL!!!

This isn't your usual game at all.

It's more like you are a member of a small wildlife expedition to capture animals on film.

The better the pictures, the better the money you get for them. You are judged on angle, closeness, clearness, etc...

You can take multiple pictures of the same animal, but be sure and choose wisely when submitting, once submitted and compensated for, the animal appears in your field guide (a virtually empty field guide at the start of the game) and you wont be eligible to get any more $$$ for a picture of the same animal. Once the animal is in the field guide you can read AMAZING facts about them. (Ok maybe the facts aren't all that amazing, but you gotta catch them all!!)

You use the $$ you earn from the pictures to buy better cameras , lenses and tools.

I'm sure many people would be turned off by this type of "game" If your idea of great fun isn't sneaking around, surveying breathtaking landscapes and biding your time waiting for a perfect shot, or if you can't stand those wildlife documentaries on National Geographic. This isn't for you.

If this sounds right up your ally, I suggest importing or hitting eBay and snagging this game.

Be sure and get the Asia version and not the Japan version. There isn't any actual speaking in the game so far, but there is a lot to read. The Asian version has English text. The Japan does not.

My girlfriend got to try this out tonight. (In fact she's still playing it)

The verdict.

She loves it.

Found out if a dominant animal gets too pissed at you being around. They will attack.

If they injure you, it's back to the base camp minus all your hard earned shots!

Don't piss off the zebras!

I actually have to correct my earlier statement about not being able to get further compensation once an animals picture is taken. While it was true for that particular day/mission. You can always go to sleep, start a new day and check your email.

You will have various emails from people requesting specific things and the requests may include animals you've already taken a picture of. I don't want to go into too much detail. Better to just experience it for yourself.

It's really a shame this games not getting a US release.

Sounds like my kind of game. Sometimes its nice to get away from the L4D's and COD's and even the RPG and play something different like this.

Have you bought aquanaut's holiday yet? Previously known as Aqua, it's by the same people, and a similar type of game.. it's reaaaally beautiful too. I'm going to pick it up.

Looks amazing as well. The Japan version sells for pretty cheap on eBay, looks like the Asian version is about the same price as Afrika. I'll definitely have to keep my eyes open for a bargain.

I just ordered Hakuna Matata *and* Aquanaut's Holiday (asian version) for really good prices :) today. Aquanaut's Holiday was about 15 dollars cheaper than Afrika, so that worked out really well :). I'm really excited about, what amounts to, Afrika but underwater. I think Aquanaut's will be a great game, especially since I really liked Endless Ocean but wished the game was larger and had more life to it. This game, judging from youtube trailers, has almost every type of under water creature available, and it's all in glorious HD :D.

I can't wait for these two games, I have a feeling they will be stars in my ps3's collection. I'm kinda in the quirky mode right now with katamari, noby noby boy, ect.. so this should fit the bill.

With both games being in English though, I still don't understand Sony's fear of debuting them in the states. I mean, Endless Ocean sold really well... there's obviously a market for these types of games.

Anywho, any other imports I should pick up? I have a feeling I have the best ones now, but ya never know. I need to sell a few games anyway that I didn't much enjoy like Grid, Burnout Paradise, and SOCOM (sadly, I love SOCOM, but the online aholes really ruin it, and it's all online so...).

Any idea when you will get these in? It will be interesting to see what you think of Afrika for sure, but I am most looking forward to your review of Aquanaut's Holiday in particular how the controls work (swimming?) I've been keeping an eye out for Aqua, haven't found one cheap enough to snag yet though.

Looks good. I'll be intrigued to hear what Aquanauts Holiday is like, I find the undersea world vastly more interesting that land. Still, Hakuna Matata looks like a nice upgrade of the old Pokemon Snap idea, which I liked.

I'm a little concerned that Aquanauts Holiday won't be too playable because of the language barrier. I'm really wanting more Endless Ocean to play so I hope my worries are baseless.

I'm starting to do game reviews (mostly for classic games) on youtube. I just did my test video last night (check General Chat section). I'll go ahead and hook the PS3 up to my mac and make a review once I get the game in my hands. They should be here monday or tuesday.

Thanks guys!

I know this is an old thread but I just noticed this game was available for purchase now in the U.S. (Had no clue)

http://www.amazon.com/Afrika-Playstation-3/dp/B000ZKDOUI/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1257576360&sr=1-5

My girl friend loved this game. If you are looking for a slick and classy Xmas gift you can't go wrong purchasing this game. Really well done.

I wasn't sure I would like Afrika and didn't want to pay $50 to find out. But I was finally to buy a new copy for a very reasonable price on Sunday and just started playing it.

I'm not very far into the game yet.... still on my first camera and can't wait to upgrade to something better so I don't have to get so damn close to the hippo's (who seem to resent my being anywhere in their vicinity) to get any sort of a decent picture. I've only completed a couple of assignments and have more to complete, but so far I'm impressed with the game and enjoying it.

Question #1: does anyone else experience LOOOOOONG load and save times? The installation took a long time but I swear this game seems to take forever to load my saved game and to save my game.

Question #2: what was the verdict on Aquanauts Holiday? Is it anywhere near as enjoyable as Afrika/Endless Ocean or is it a game to forget about buying?

Sounds like Pokemon:Snap... without the Pokemon... and the N64.

Also sounds like fun.

I thought the same thing when I was reading the synopses of the game years ago before its release. I think this game is much cooler though. You really get sucked into the game because it's a real profession, set in the real world, with real animals and not some whimsical, cartoon.

Summed up:

Pokemon:Snap = Fluffy Pikachu Gristle

Afrika = Thick Hyena Steak

Recommended highly still.
