Full hardware based backwards compatability.

If Im a newer PS3 buyer I would be pissed.

Its nice to see FULL hardware backwards compat like the 60GB model once again. This news is not confirmed but it will probably happen.

But why are they increasing the price?? Hard drives are cheap!!

Lets overcharge people for a bigger harddrive.

Oh well I like my system dont really care, lucky enough to own the 60Gb model

PS3 Price Increase Revealed

By CheapyD, Today

A reliable source at a major US retailer has provided CAG with this exclusive photo of a now confirmed PS3 price increase. Two new PS3 SKUs were revealed, both containing full hardware based backwards compatibility with price and hard drive size being the only differences between. The 250 GB unit will be priced at $499.99 and the 500 GB model will return the PS3 back to its earlier $599.99 price point. When contacted for comment, SCEA's VP of Marketing, Jack DeVaney confirmed the new SKUs and prices:

"Increasing storage capacity helps us better communicate the value inherent in the PS3. Combined with built in Blu-ray, Wi-Fi, and full backwards compatibility, no other system can match our value proposition. One of the great things about the PS3 is that if you buy it today you can be confident it's going to be the centerpiece of your entertainment for the next 10 years. Economically, that's a great value."

The new PS3s will be available May 5th.

Common guys, it's Sony. You had to see this coming ;). If you want a feature, you have to pay for it. Sony doesn't care about making us happy, they just want our money. God, thinking of which, I'm remembering some sevice calls I had to make to Sony with my PS2 slim :shudders:

Anywho, kinda sucks that my ps3 doesn't have backwards compatability, but I want to use my Test PS2, so who cares... that and I spend two hundred less on my white ps3, so no biggie for me.

yeah, I call april fools on this one. with both of its major (and more popular) competitors hardware available for less than half of the price of the $599 unit--sony's never been that stupid. Not to mention the word "value" was used 3 times to describe a $200 price increase--which seems extremely hoaxy. Terms like 'premium gaming experience' would have sounded considerably more legit.

I'm surprised '4/1 syndrome' didn't give us news of software backwards compatibility with ps2 for all ps3 models with today's firmware update.

not supporting backwards compatibility on all ps3s kind of bit sony in the rear, in my case. When I got persona 4 on PS2, I could have just popped it into my ps3--but no, I had to hook up my ps2, and pull the component cable out of the ps3 (component cable does my audio) rendering it 'not hooked up.' then I proceeded to play ps2 for the last month... Turns out I missed a lot of atlus rpgs, and by the time I finish half of those, I'm sure I'll be right at the start of the huge xmas season ps3 titles.

It's sad for a company when people are honestly debating whether your next marketing move is an April Fool's joke or not. What does it say for the "brains" at the top when people assume they are so stupid they may do something so moronic people think it must be a joke.

If this is true, it's the wrong way to go.
