Wal-Mart bundels

Hey, so in my local Wal-Mart, according to a note attached to the display, any PS3 now comes with:

300 on Blu-Ray

Some other movie on Blu Ray

Some other movie on Blu-Ray

GT Prologue

Resistance or Killzone, I can't remember which.

Is this a Sony promotion, or is Wal-Mart trying real hard to unload PS3s? Anyone know? All that stuff pretty much makes the more expensive version seem pointless, as the extra money only gets you Drake's Fortune and a bigger HDD, which is pretty weak sauce when you're already getting two big first party games and three Blu-Ray movies anyway.

Whoa, for a second there I thought this meant it came with 300 Blu-Ray movies until I realized you meant the movie "300" on Blu Ray! I didn't think Sony was THAT desperate to sell the PS3 by offering 300 movies!

Just added an "on" to clear that up. :)

Don't know about the Walmart bundles, but I saw today that Amazon is once again selling the much sought after MSG4 80gb bundle. Not sure where they found them or how many they have in stock but they are limiting sales to one per address.

System is pricey at $499 but some consider it well worth the money for the BC feature.

So am I, as a no Sony system owning gamer, to understand that this bundle you are talking about contains full backward compatibility, MGS4, and an 80GB harddrive, and it is not still available at retail? Why? That sounds like the best possible PS3 really. I mean, sure 120 GB is nice and all, but I think most people would opt for BC over the extra 40 Gigs on an already decent sized harddrive.

The MSG4 bundle was discontinued shortly after its release last year. Why? I have no idea and only Sony, with its infinite marketing wisdom, knows the true reason.

And when it comes right down to it, which size HD comes packed on the PS3 isn't that important since its easy to change out the pre-installed one for the HD of your choosing.

I own a launch 60gb with BC, have had no problems at all, and am very happy with it. If I had extra $$$$ laying around, I'd probably jump on this bundle before its sold out, just to have a backup BC machine around.

HERE is the Amazon listing.

You want to get the best deal you can find cause as Mendon mentioned its super easy to swap out the drive.

It uses a standard SATA laptop drive which you can get at NewEgg.com for roughly 50 bucks (160GB plus)

If you plan on upgrading later, the PS3 has a back up utility under the XMB which lets you backup your PS3 to an external drive and then restore it on the new harddrive.

I'm lucky enough to have the rare 60GB model with hardware BC. I installed a 160GB drive so I got lots of space now.

The PS3 also has an option under the XMB to install another OS.

So....if your a PC kind of guy....partition the new drive and install Linux for some emulator goodness.

(Yellowdog Linux has good instructions on their site)

Then again there are other systems for emulation like the Wii.

:D

What's it matter? You have absolutely no interest in ever buying a Playstation, so what's the point in educating you on pricing bundles? I never quite understood the mentality of not owning at least one console of a whole company's system catalog. You miss out on so much...

I mean, if I didn't get the unpopular systems, I'd have missed out on pretty much all my favorite systems: Saturn, Dreamcast, Virtual Boy, N64 DD, PSP....

General interest. I'm still allowed that in the bare, mean existence of a gamer in 2009, am I not? I may ask a question civilly and have a discussion that is also civil because it interests me, can't I? Or has the internet fanboy war become so big that we toss out even ernest discussion if we detect someone does not have all three consoles, regardless if they were being offensive or not?

I did own one Sony system that was given to me. Near the end of the PS1's life, my brother bought me one of those little white PSone's. I disliked it as much as I thought I did (but as said before, outside of 2D Saturn stuff, I hated that entire generation and consider it an abomination).

Regarding the PS3, it's the first Sony system I've been very tempted to buy simply because it is unpopular. I have said on these boards many times that I prefer unpopular systems, because they take risks to try to sell more, and because they publish any third party material they are lucky enough to be offered, giving niche product a happy home. I sold most of my 25 systems starting two years ago, and here is what I kept intentionally, to demonstrate what type of system I like:

O2

7800

Master System

N-Gage

Lynx

Genesis/32X

And now I have a 360 and Wii, with the Wii doubling as my beloved Gamecube. Does that look like the list of someone who writes off poorly performing systems?

That totally makes sense. Even though I have tons of games for the PS2 I always felt disappointed with it, I preferred the Xbox and that too had a lot of games for it.

Both those systems are fun if your into modding though. :)

The PS3 is kind of strange, a dark horse if you will, for some reason even if it lacks the millions of games the 360 has I still prefer it over anything else. I just love playing around with it, some of the downloadable games are worth full retail price IMO. Its got some wierd unique games that are insanely fun. Pixeljunk Monsters for one and the utlimate game nobody has played: Valkyria Chronicles by Sega.
