GT5 with damage. Vid inside.

I've got kind of a sore spot about Gran Turismo. I've been waiting for gt5 for a long damn time, and that vid is just insulting.

I hope I'm wrong, but it looks like it's the standard prerendered 'concept'--if there were anything of substance there, it should have been demoed live. I doubt the real game won't look like the vid, as per usual with sony/pd. How many years has it been, and we're still looking at prerendered gt5 mockups?

to top it off not so much as a release date, feature, car or track list out of them. And no news in how long now? Too damn long.

as if polyphony digital doesn't have enough on their plate not releasing this game, sony has them work on a gran turismo for their lame-ass portable. Spiffy. The psp 'useless edition' gets gt as a launch title. I buy a flashy system and a nice wheel, and boom--back to d-pad, buttons and low res textures for the series.

If they ever decide to support my G25 on 360, I could really see myself getting into forza 3. Now that was an e3 treat. Their cars were rolling and flipping, no questions about what brands will be supported, and no goddamn 30 different skylines in each game. The best part is they release games and support fans.

sorry, gran turismo's a bit of a sore spot with me, since I bought the system for it and all. actuall looking at what I do see in the video, I might be seeing the top gear test track, a host of new cars (including race models, rally and nascar) and the damage appears to only be modelled on the rally car--none of the other crashes show it, and if it was there, they'd highlight it. I also suspect that there aren't going to be any porsches or lamborghini's, because if they were going to be there, they would have showed them, so the fanbase at least knew they were licensed. and those are just two of the brands forza's have and gt's don't.

I'm pretty well done with gran turismo right now--don't even want to think about it. and I just hope NFS: Shift provides me with at least a little enjoyment this holiday season, because unless I somehow missed the announcement of a release date, yet *again* gt5 won't be out this year.

Good games take a long time to make. I'm quite happy with waiting to be honest. If you honestly want to put your eggs in the Need For Speed basket, be my guest, but I'm telling you right now it won't be as good.

Of course it's pre-rendered. You can tell just by the anti-aliasing. However, you can also tell that those are PS3 graphics. As far as the collision detection, they woudln't have zoomed in on the rally car like that unless they wanted to show it off. But GT has never been about crashes, so while it might be there, it's not going to be a major part of it. You can't see if there's damage modeling or not in the other scenes because it goes too fast and there's tire smoke all over the place.

Have some patience, or hey... give up on them. I'll be enjoying the game whenever it comes out, and you can have Need For Speed and be looking over at what I'm playing with jealous eyes.

It's like asking Nintendo to make a Zelda every year for the Wii. While it's what many wish for, it's just not possible if you're trying to create a good gaming experience.

it's not as though I won't go for gran turismo when/if it comes out, but I'm looking at realistic options in the meanwhile that don't involve me having to buy another system and another wheel and NFS: Shift looks like the only game in town. this lack of news/releases isn't typical of polyphony digital, and their prerendered video and october release portable spinoff really ticked me off, is all.

It's been 5 years since gt4 and the series is having delays/problems that Forza just isn't. Where's a proper gameplay vid? Everything they presented and stated about the gran turismo psp title needed to be said about gt5. It's not so much that I expected a 2009 release of gt5, as much as I didn't expect Forza 3 and I didn't expect PD to be wasting time on a lame psp title.

really not happy with polyphony digital right now.

It may be being outputted so that there's no jaggies, but you do realize everything they showed was the after-race reply, right? Hence the camera effects, ect. This is still in game footage. If it wasn't, they would have bothered to do better hair on the people in the town.

I disagree, we've looked at gt5 prerenders before, and they weren't of the absolute finest quality (though they're worlds better than prologue). Hell, even the prologue trailers looked nicer than prologue. I hope you're right on it, I really do, because that will be awfully pretty. I just remember the huge stink the prerendered motorstorm movies caused, and this video looks better.

one thing backing the replay idea up are the typically awful trees, and that PD is known for pulling insane graphics out of their hardware.

I'm just not seeing things like the occasional chop prologue replays have, or texture snap. it's possible they fixed these things--and good on them if they have, but I'll have to see more of it to believe it. What I am seeing is manual camera adjustment (zoom on the damage), which may well be a feature in the full game, but it certainly makes it look like a more manipulated video than just a few seconds of replays.

of note is that 'somebody' from sony somewhere said they're shooting for an 09 release. I'll believe it when I'm waiting in line at the store. Too many release dates have come and gone for me to take them on their word.

Yea, 09 ...no it's not going to happen. I thought people have been saying 2011 as a rumor. Hope not.

From what's been circulating in rumor at E3, it's been said that the video was compiled mostly from replay footage, and honestly, after looking at it, I tend to believe it. There's quite a few visual flaws in it to be doctored and pre-rendered. Either way, as long as they fix the ubber jaggie shadows we got on the dashboard from the inside car view, I'm happy, and from what I've seen, I think that will finally be gone.

I'm just wondering if they're doing away with customizing the car. I actually quite liked the pick up and play aspect of GT 5 Prologue. I know a lot of people were bitching about the no part customizing, but I quite liked it, and was the first GT game I truly got into. I always felt like the old GTs were more about getting that car tricked out so that it could blow away the competition than really taking equal cars on race to tell which was the better driver.

So here's to hoping. With God of War III being March of 2010, I want to say this won't come out till at least then. However, Sony keeps touting over 300 games for all PS systems this year, blah blah blah.. so you'd think that since this was such a large part of their demonstration, this would be one of those 300+ games. I hope :ponder:

I will say this though. Whenever they do come out with this game, I'll be the first in line if it's like Prologue. Best experience other than Wipeout HD that I've had for racing on any system to date.

customization will be there--it's been in all the gt games and perhaps more importantly in the competition's games as well. who knows what form the system will take though. I'm hoping for a hybrid of the old gran turismo system and the current prologue system. (which would basically make it a clone of the forza system where parts are added and they increase a performance rating) I have to confess that this time around, I really like the 'pick a car and get to know it stock' feeling too. Probably an effect of finally having a true feedback wheel. But when racing others it gets pretty cheap without customization, as everybody just picks the best stock car for the job.

Previously in this type of game, I've enjoyed customizing the cars as much as driving them. In forza1, for example, I had so much fun building a fleet of 'perfect' d-class cars to fit my various moods. (I like low speed cars more than fast ones).

they also may not have really gotten rid of the jaggies--the trailers for prologue were all jag free. Maybe they don't appear at 1080p--I wouldn't know, since I'm only 720p and they're pretty evident.

Yea, the regular jaggies will always be there. Actually, I wasn't talking about normal jaggies. My beef is with the shadow that moves over the dashboard as you drive. It seriously looks like it's 72 ppi, and it's very distracting against the beautiful interior. It just seemed like one of those "let's try to get the shadow to movie correctly and hit everything correctly, but we don't have time in this Prologue version to make it look smooth'.

It kinda reminded me of the harsh, bumpy shadows found on the x-wings and other starships of Rogue Squadron for the Gamecube. Looks great far away, but up close, it's a nightmare.

That's all I want to be changed, but like I said the shadows *seem* to be much crisper this time around... so I'm praying for the best.

Either way, it's about how the cars feel when you drive, and there's no company that can do that better than Poly.

looking at the 720p video from playstation network, it really does look like the game engine--just with cameras manually doctored with and a mysterious lack of jaggies. Comparing prologue to it's trailer, it's the same way.

also this interview seems to suggest that 'end of the year' might not be unreasonable for a release date, so every time I say it, I can now remove the words "my ass" from the end of the sentence. Actually in general I take back much of my negativity.

Why didn't they just put this info out at the announcement?

IMO Gran Turismo has gone downhill as it is. GT4 was expected on the PSP a long time ago. If it will interface with GT4 using a PS2 (or 3), then I'm all for it. I'll probably buy that.

As for the wheel, Logitech has been good at making a new wheel every time a new Gran Turismo comes out. If I was going to buy GT5, I'd have waited to buy the wheel until the game had been released. Perhaps my Driving Force wheel would work with it, saving me a couple hundred bucks.

they've already released one wheel for it, the driving force GT. general consensus on it is that the driving force GT isn't enough of an upgrade over the 'driving force pro' they introduced for GT4 to be worth buying.

generally speaking gt5:prologue works well with most USB feedback wheels.

I went g25 as soon as I heard prologue supported the clutch/h-plate shifter.

I wish they'd supported that kind of thing from the first Gran Turismo. The way they've had it, in the game you really just rev the engine in neutral then slam the clutch in to take off. IRL that would destroy the vehicle's U joints, clutch disc, and flywheel over the course of a few starts. Plus the game doesn't allow you to get the massive torque available by slipping the clutch on the way into first gear.

Damage is fine, but I want blood on the windscreen. When you're having to drive one of those dull-ass family cars that you start the game with, I want a collision to be accompanied by a solitary childs shoe on the asphalt. :)

and I want to run over grandmas for points and have the wipers clean their remains off the windshield. ;)

speaking of damage vids, gt5 demo *is* playable at gamescom, and below is some rather careless driving from it:

yep, that's the game I bought my ps3 for.

now that ps3 is priced lower, and actually saves users some money by recycling their old pc/ps2 racing wheels, I believe sony consoles will really start to move pretty soon here. Afterall, GT5 Prologue is already the best selling game on the platform.

lol that was pretty funny. I noticed there's a big push on that game at gamescom. Has there been any leak regarding a closer release date? I heard it was rumored for this year a couple weeks ago when the Slim was coming out of the woodwork.

one thing to note is that it's obvious that not all cars have damage (maybe it's only the race models?)

in the vid, the evo takes no damage, so either there's some kind of 'the other driver was being a jerk' penalty system in effect, or that evo just doesn't have damage.

rumors are that it will launch this year. They're starting to look much less like rumors since E3 when it was confirmed by a lower-level sony exec that they were 'trying' to get it out the door by xmas, and slightly later an interview with PD's Kazunori Yamauchi stated that at this point GT5 could 'release at any time.'

but still no *official* date, and IGN directly asked for one in today's article :ponder:

they're taking bets on the exact date over at gtplanet...

though with the extremely short notice on the slim, it seems that maybe Sony has started to rely on suprise, shock and awe to sell consoles this season. Keep an eye on TGS next month, if they're going to suprise us with a short-fuse its release, right after TGS would be the time I'd do it.

also of note, PD has really been taunting us with info. for example that large bit of info I quoted above from their website yesterday, well that's gone now. Replaced with a tidbit about a Gran Turismo edition psp-3000

well, I guess at TGS I finally got something like a Gran Turismo 5 launch window.

March-ish for Japan.

guess I can safely put the steering wheel back in its box.

Forza 3 costs me $700, so I guess I have to buy need for speed shift, or go without a driving game this year. I've heard bad things about shift's physics model.

Ive heard Shift is simply very shallow. You can get all the unlockables in no time because of how insanely easy it is to earn money in the game.

Anywho, don't fret on GT5. It'll be here before you know it. I have my Logitech wheel under my second desk, waiting for it and only it. :)

I don't think the NFS Shift physics model is that bad. I'm not sure I'd want to fork over $60 for the game though. I'm having fun with it but as DaytonaUSA says, it's very easy to earn money. You can earn money any time you drive the car, including if you go practice a track alone.

You also earn money for not realistic things like knocking other cars off the road.....etc.
