Just bought a Sega Saturn

I just added a Sega Saturn console to my collection! It is my first Sega console and my first CD console as well.

My question is what are the best games to get for it?

I purchased a light gun and Virtua Cop. That rocks. The only problem is that the light gun apparently does not work on my DLP big screen and my only tube set is a little 13" (it works on that). I guess I will be looking for a big, pre-digital tube TV if I want to play light gun games on my old consoles. Has anyone else who has run into this figured out a way to get a light gun to work on a newer TV? What about LCD?

I guess that is two questions...

Traditional light guns works by taking a picture of the screen and detecting where the electron beam from the CRT TV is located in relation the where the gun is pointing. To make this more visible any game which used light guns would fill the screen in a "flash" of colour whenever the trigger was pressed.

Using a little maths to work out where the electron beam would be in relation to the screen character you were aiming at would determine if you had hit or miss your intended target. Sounds complicated but it worked really well.

The problem with modern TV's (plasma / LCD's) is there is no electron beam. So the software thinks you are not pointing the gun at the screen at all!

I have heard about the cobra light gun - not sure how this works as I have never used one. But worth a try.

You dont need another TV taking up space which could be used to expand our collection! ;)

Oh... And Sega Rally... Great game!

-Duke Nukem 3D had a good port to the Saturn, as did Quake and Hexen (Doom not so much)

-Alien Trilogy

-Astal

-NiGHTS

-Command and Conquer! This game is a classic!

-Powerslave

-Panzer Dragoon Zwei (Saga is good too, but luck finding it under $180)

-Burning Rangers

-House of the Dead (of coarse)

-Bomberman (get the multi tap!)

-Street Fighter Alpha 2

EDIT:

Oh yeah, be sure to pick up an action replay cartridge if you plan on playing any imports or desire extra memory.

There's a gun called the Super Cobra that's compatible with the Saturn and it also fills in for the Konami guns as well as the GunCon 1 on the PS1. If you use it on a PS2, you may have to modify the plug. The Super Cobra connects into the video signal just as the GunCon does, and this is required to use it on the Saturn also. It is almost pinpoint accurate due to this.

I second NiGHTS if you can get the 3D pad. I also second Command & Conquer, but this is one of the more difficult versions both to play and to find. It may have the Covert Ops on it, but if so, they have not been accessed. You might check and be sure you get the right double CD insert--it's a big piece of plastic that fits on the left side of the case so the discs are side by side when the case is open.

Other good games:

Shining the Holy Ark. The graphics are pretty impressive, it also has a decent storyline and battle system.

Virtual On: Operation Moongate (usually known simply as "Virtual On"). Get the NetLink version if you can, and maybe a DirectLink cable. You should try to find a Twin Stick for this game.

Gex. This one's pretty funny.

And to put your guns to use, grab up Virtua Cop 1 and 2 and Area 51.

No one has mentioned Fighter's Megamix yet? One of THE best games on the Saturn, period. It's like every Sega fighter mushed into a really kick-ass game. Awesome.

SCUD The Disposable Assassin is an EXCELLENT game, and very underrated. It uses the light gun for certain sections, too.

Legend of Oasis is another kick ass title. The sequel to Beyond Oasis on the Genny.

Enemy Zero is cool, but sort of clunky. You gotta get used to it. It's part of the "D" universe created by Kenji Eno.

The Saturn is a seriously under-rated system. There is a buttload of great games for it, especially if you are willing to go the import route. My personal faves are Daytona USA and Daytona USA CCE, the Virtua Fighter games, Die Hard Arcade, and Astal. If you are going to do imports, then Capcom Generations vols. 1, 2, and 4, and Strikers 1945. I've just started to scratch the surface of the Saturn myself, so I haven't been exposed to everything the system has to offer.

If you are planning to put a mod chip in your system, PM me.

I didn't expect anyone else to mention Enemy Zero. If you give it the time of day, it's great. Be warned, though, the challenge level is very high, and several of the game's parameters are adjusted accordingly. You can only save and reload a limited number of times before having to start over. In some cases, you get only ONE reload through the entire game. You also are given ammunition in accordance with the difficulty level, so swapping guns does not mean you will get a better or more powerful gun. Sometimes the "upgrade" is much weaker, but better than nothing at all.

If you do get this and you have trouble on it, PM me. I had planned to write a detailed FAQ for it at one point, but I got too lazy to write after I had explored and beaten all four levels of the game. The FAQs I found out there the last time I played through just didn't cut it.

I'll concur with most of these suggestions. I'll also add that you should pick up Sonic Jam. This being your first Sega console, you need to own the classic Genesis Sonic titles, which are all on this excellent disc.

Saturn Bomberman

Duke Nukem

Virtual On netlink Edition

Those are the best Netlink games. They're great on their own but a little free online Netlink match never hurt anyone.

Were you a part of the NetLink community back in the day?

Personally:

Daytona USA

Sega Rally

Sega Touring Car

Sky Target (AWEsome game)

Astal

Sonic R

Sonic Jam (if anything to see what a 3D sonic on Saturn could have been. It's neat)

Burning Rangers

Nights

Street Fighter Zero 3

Panzer Dragoon 2 Zwei

F1 Challenge

Virtua Fighter (the first one.. Remix is fine)

Virtua Cop 1 and 2

Pandemonium

Rayman

Virtual On

Fighting Vipers

Magic Carpet

Metal Slug

Vampire Savior

Xmen VS Street Fighter

Those are just a few. There's others that I love, but they aren't ones that I'm sure most here would consider classics. The Saturn is a REALLY amazing system and has a lot more games for it that most people give it credit for, especially imports. Don't let the endless sports games you seem to find at used game stores shape your opinion on what US games you can get either. eBay is a fun place to see new games you have never heard of before. Do some research on them before buying and see if they're any good. Youtube has tons of footage of oddball Saturn games, and it's great to see if it's right for you.

Best of luck! You're going to love your Saturn :).
