I'm still holding out for a 5200 EMU that does the proto's, and emulates both buttons on the controller properly.  I have yet to find an EMU that does both..

Whick proto's are you specifically having trouble with? I am pretty sure I have VSS working with most of the protos

I'll have to get back to you on that. I don't remember what emu with what games I was having troubles with. I got the Win800, Win800 Plus, VSS, and Jum's Jum's runs many of the protos, but tends to be slow IIRC..

Again, the 5200 emulator for Dreamcast plays most (I'd say 85-90%) of the games correctly w/ 2 button support. Heck last night I had a good round of SuperPacman, and before that checked out Tempest for a few minutes.

All played on the comfy couch in front of the tv. :)

Now ask me if I have a Dreamcast

I post news to AtariAge all the time about updated and new emulators, so I don't think the emulation scene is dying at all. Certainly many of the emulators for the 2600 have matured to a point where they only need tweaks now and again. With several excellent emulators out there (Stella, z26, PCAEWin, etc) you really can't expect people to start on a *new* 2600 emulator when there are many other interesting projects to tackle.

As systems get older and emulators get to the point of "perfection" (at least technically, you can always write new user-interfaces for the emulator and add interesting features to it), I would expect less activity. But as new operating systems (OS X) and platforms (Pocket PC) come along, there will always be a desire to either get existing emulators to work on them, or perhaps write new ones from scratch, depending on the architcture of the target machine.

And as newer game systems get older and fade from the limelight, people will always be writing emulators for them.
