Katamari demo now available

Played the demo.

Positives:

The title screen was sharp and colorful. Looked better than great.

The new desert level was interesting and fun. Although I did terrible at it!! LOL

There are some sort of new power-ups here that when rolled up give you the power to suck up anything near you, very cool.

The design of at least some of the cousins are new (and funky).

Negatives :

The room in Create a Star 1 was exactly the same as the 360 version. (Except it was cell shaded and had some unique power ups) Even most of the items were in the same locations. I was able to 100% it easily because I had played it many times before. I have a feeling the majority of this game is going to be recycled from Beautiful Katamari.

The cell shaded world looks terrible. Demo doesn't give you the option to change it that I found. I think the full version will. There are several skins you can apply to the levels I guess to make them appear fresh. I will be sticking to the plain old vanilla if I'm given the option in the full version.

Navigating the world seems needlessly difficult, having to flip between screens it might just be I'm not used to the front end so that might change once I get it.

Observation:

People in the past have mentioned that Playstation versions of Katamari were much easier to control than the 360 version. I think I read it was because the older games didn't use the analog sticks. That is to say when you used the sticks it was all or nothing. This version does use the analog sticks. I never had much of an issue with the control on the 360, but this versions feels the same so some people might be disappointed.

There seems enough new here to make it worth a purchase to me. I can't wait to see the world in full 1080p (minus the cell shading of course)

I only played 1 round last night, headed to a Beatles Rock Band party soon after (and brought my Atari for a few bouts of Medieval Mayhem!).

The original PS2 version uses both analog sticks to control it. I think the "issue" with the 360 is the analog sticks are in different positions than the Playstation's, which makes it feel "odd" to people who played Katamari Damacy.

The reason for the Roboking is (as far as I understand):-

The King of all the Cosmos has had an accident and is in a coma. His post has been temporarily filled by the Roboking.

The game is split between classic levels (which you're going through to try and revive the memory of the King and wake him) and the new ones (which are under the Robokings jurisdiction).

Barking mad but then it IS Katamari.

Nice to have a demo, although the two stages on offer weren't the best.

I knew it used both of the sticks, but thought the game didn't recognize the analog of the sticks, I booted up my copy of Demacy and played and that isn't the case. Works just like this does. I'm glad I did this, one thing over whelming was the difference between playing the PS2 version in standard def, and the PS3 in 1080p. There will be no going back now!!!

  • 2 weeks later...

Did you get it at Game Stop? If not, perhaps it's a GS only bonus.

Yea I did. I called them up and they said "we never said we guarantee you to get the pre-order bonus. We have no idea how many, if any, we'll receive".

Wow.. thanks! lol

Ah well, I got it for the game, not the toy, and the game is fantastic. How far are you along? I think I've completed about 12 levels or so. I've already gone back on most of them a second or third time to get higher scores. The controls are spot on, though I must say I'm using the R2 button to jump instead of the sixaxis controls. Most of the time, as soft or hard as I pull up or down, it does nothing. Reminded me of poor Wii game controls or something. I'm just happy it's optional. Otherwise, the game is great and the "home" base area is a lot easier to get where you want to go instead of needlessly flying around a mini world to go to each level.

That sucks.

I think I've played 6 levels so far. While I got 100 on one, I need to go back and get better scores on the rest.

Good to know, I'll try R2 tonight as I'm not having any luck with the sixaxis jumping either :|

Just got back from snagging my copy. I asked the guy behind the counter about the swag and he said sure!!!

That sucks you didn't get one Daytona, I would send an email to their corporate office.

Looking forward to tearing through some levels later tonight.

It appears proximity to the cell phone's antenna determines how well Prince detects incoming calls - the iPhone's antenna is at the bottom of the phone and when Prince is positioned there he consistently reacts to an incoming call.

I suspect that touching Prince's face (in the prior video) enabled him to pick up the signal better. I've noticed that on TVs in the past - touching the rabbit ears often resulted in a clearer picture.

Whoah!! Thanks SpiceWare! I kept pressing all over my Prince because it looked like maybe the head lit up or something but never could figure out how to get it to turn on. After awhile I decided that it was just how the keychain was made and it didn't actually light up. Now I know the secret!!

What a pal.
