mimo
I have read that it is legal to download PSN purchases up to 5 times, and you can share games that you have purchased with mates. I have not downloaded anything yet, but would be interested in maybe swapping some downloads when I do.
Shannon
Not sure about this, but from what I read it sounded like you could install them on up to 5 machines, but you had to "download" them with the ID that they were purchased under. So I dunno if sharing your ID and password with people would be a wise idea.
Reaperman
I've been looking into this a bit lately. you can actually download your purchases as many times you want--to any of the up to 5 machines associated with your psn account. Meaning that the game will only work on that machine as long as your account is associated with it. You have to physically log your account in, and to unassociate the machine, you have to log in and unassociate it. (best not to do that online, as that's a lot of trust placed in strangers) I considered sharing with a buddy of mine locally, but it's too much hassle to be worth it for a few inexpensive games. Hanging out with a buddy all afternoon is well worth coughing up an extra fiver for a game. Also, I haven't really heard of it happening in the US, but I've heard euro PSN has been temp banning people for swapping login info on forums (against PSN terms of use). While it can happen, piracy is not really the intended purpose of game sharing. It's more for bringing part of your game library over to your buddy's house without having to carry discs, ease of use should ps3 hardware need replaced, or for people who own more than one working system. Atariboy
It's perfectly safe to do as long as you have a small amount of trust in who you're trading with that they won't go and provide your login information to friends so you end up losing additional slots beyond the 1 of the 4 spares your willing to share. You just have to delete cc information prior to doing it (So the person your trading with can't make purchases), and change your password so it remains secure. mimo
does sound to be more trouble than it's worth to be honest.
liveinabin
Surely if you give someone else your login to 'share' games, it also gives carte blanche access to your bank details in the store. Not clever.
boog
And, it's illegal. Sony changed the Terms of Use for PSN last year to specifically prohibit sharing/transferring your login for use by anyone outside of your household. So, the extra downloads are just for people with multiple consoles or if you want to play your PSN games temporarily on someone else's PS3. The temp bans on people who have been caught should be a clue that it's not allowed...
Atariboy
Surely if you give someone else your login to 'share' games, it also gives carte blanche access to your bank details in the store. Not clever. That is why you delete credit card information prior to trading accounts, and either give your account a temporary password for the trade and change it back afterwards, or change your password to something new after the trade so the user can't access your account without your permission afterwards. Perfectly safe to do unless you have any unspent cash on your account or are worried the person your trading with will give your account to his friends and use up all your activation slots. If that's a concern, it's not someone you should even be considering trading with anyways. Just be aware your account can only ever be activated on 5 different consoles, so it's not something I suggest doing regularly with different people each time. The temp bans on people who have been caught should be a clue that it's not allowed... How would they tell your not using it in a legitimate manner that the TOS allows? Plus, I've never heard of anyone banned for it. I traded a game as a thank you to someone a while back that let me download the delisted Gran Turismo HD demo from their account, and had no issues. moycon
Ok well this answered questioned I had in regards to the way Sony handles game sharing. Basically it's the same set-up MS has which sucks. They need to allow people with multiple units to tie games to each console. How hard can that be? You register each console, maybe pay a small licensing fee and you can play the games you bought and any of you consoles in the house, without having to log in. Atariboy
They allow you to activate your games on up to 5 pieces of hardware. That is why people share games sometimes by taking advantage of those 5 activations you have available. The PSN account that purchased the title just needs to be logged in for the download, it isn't needed for future use by the person you traded with. It is completely different from how Microsoft handles it. They're not tied to a single console, nor do you need to be logged in with the account that purchased the game to play it on any console the game has been activated on (The person your sharing with just needs your login information to download the game, afterwards they never need the account to play the game). The only limitation is your stuff can only be on up to 5 different consoles. I believe it used to be 5 activations per title, but it is now 5 account activations. So be careful how you trade. Let 4 people login with your account to share games with and you won't have a spare if your PS3 dies and has to be replaced since you won't be able to log on to a 6th console. And I believe everything I said only applies to games and game content, and goes out the window when your talking about media downloads on PSN. I've never downloaded anything like videos off of PSN (Though I have done quite a bit of it on XBL on the 360), but I've read you can only download a video once and have to pay to ever redownload it, even to the console that purchased it. moycon
(The person your sharing with just needs your login information to download the game, afterwards you never need the account to play the game). Ah thanks for clearing that up Atariboy. I must have been reading this wrong. A much better way to handle DLC. Thanks for that!
cimerians
Yup its a nice feature just don't be stupid. http://www.tqcast.com/2009/09/sony-not-at-fault-for-game-sharing-stupidity/
Christopher T Leach
I have an ex employees ID name on my Ps3...anytime he downloads something he just calls me and tells me what he downloaded....He didnt leave any credit card information on his account so I dont see it, but the way it works... You have your own ID login and your friend has thiers... You set up an extra ID login on your ps3 with thier email and password... When you sign on, you sign on under their name....their backgroud comes up with thier settings.. Then you have to visit the Playstation Store... When you go into the store you goto the recent downloads and you can download them to your ps3... From there you log out and the download is on your id as well... (Sidenote: while logged in under thier id...you can purchase stuff if they have a credit card or credit on their account...you can also pm their friends lists....nice to mess with your friends friends just for laughs...) As for this being illegal? Thats all covered before this post...Im not into the legalities of the situation at hand...
