Bah! 2600 Video Out Half-Failure

Recommended Posts

After much cursing and a fair amount of rosin fumes up my nose ;) I got the video mod on my Junior from Ben Heckerdorn's awesome site: http://www.classicgaming.com/vcsp/ up and running. Sort of.

It works fine on one TV I have, but my main television cannot display the video. I'm guessing, similar to the mod here on AAge, that I have to boost the signal somehow. My TV is a new RCA 27" and I have tried running it directly into the back of the TV, and through a video tuner box thing but so far no luck.

The audio works fine, and I can get a "pop" indicating that the TV is recieving a signal, but nothing else. :? I'm all out of ideas and have no idea how to build a signal booster but would give it a shot if anyone could point me in the right direction. The most frustrating thing is that this is my only system, having sent my spare off to Junie's :x

Any help is appreciated. Thanks! :)

Buy a signal amplifier at Radio Shack. You will also need a couple of RCA to F-jack converters as the amplifiers invariably have F-jack connectors.

If you want to build your own amplifier look at the S-Video/composite mod in the 2600 FAQ, it includes a basic amplifier.

Thanks--the video amp from Radio Shack drives the signal, but just barely on my TV: it takes several seconds and a few tries to get it up, but man is it crisp. Sort of.

I resoldered the setup with thin wiring and little solder. I now have a wavering image, with a fair amount of garbage on the left side. Also, the picuture has shifted down and to the right. Where on the board do I go to work on this?

Again thanks, I'll put up a photo of what I have if anyone is interested. This is a fun hack, but since there are so many ways to do it I'm not sure where to go from here. :)
