Almost Rice
Does it have highlights for other languages? I have never heard of ConTEXT before. I use UltraEdit since it has highlights for SQR and Peoplecode. I saw SQR on the link provided. ConTEXT is amazing, once you really tweak the settings, and create your own syntax higlighters (for any language, including MADS). It's super convenient to have a "one editor for everything environment" with ConTEXT. UNIXcoffee928
Does it have highlights for other languages? I have never heard of ConTEXT before. I use UltraEdit since it has highlights for SQR and Peoplecode. I saw SQR on the link provided. There are many highlighters (found here), but the beauty of ConTEXT is that you can throw your own syntax highlighters together for whatever you want to highlight, simply by editing a text-file that contains the definition of the things that you want to have highlighted. For example, here is the 6502 highlighter... just look at it in anything that views text... you simply load a highlighter that is close to what you want to define, then edit it to suit your needs. You can further tweak your colors with the color-pickers, directly within ConTEXT, as it will merely make changes to the highlighter text-file. You can always load that file up in the editor, and add to it to your heart's delight... You can make a highlighter for anything... for example, say you wanted to have a syntax highlighter for baking or cooking recipes... it's easy to do, just create keywords like: milk, sugar, eggs, butter, etc. So, download it, read the instructions for adding highlighters, and have fun. flashjazzcat
I never "promised" anything. I tried to estimate when things would be done. If you want to restart all the crap that was banished from here a few months back, you can imagine how that will end too. Shawn Jefferson
FJC, no reason to even explain... no one's paying for this. It'll be done when it's done, or maybe never. It's your project. I guess you can be flattered that people are impatient to get even a demo on their real Atari computer! 5 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/154520-new-gui-for-the-atari-8-bit/page/134/#findComment-3167192 Share on other sites
flashjazzcat
Impatience is understandable, but I'm pretty impatient with myself too, and nothing's more frustrating than not having the time to work on this project. People donated money a few years back to help support the undertaking (and specifically to help me buy a new PC when my old machine died and I had no money for a replacement), but that's not the sole reason that the project WILL eventually see completion. But certainly it'll take a long time. There's no logistical way around that until we reach the stage at which the API is sufficiently well documented that people can start contributing drivers, etc... and even then, relying on third-party contributions brings with it a whole new set of logistical variables. Anyway: I'm throwing a few hours at it this evening, and all the tabs of the Profiler (task manager) are working now. Multiple instances of applications can now be opened and shut down; memory manager and relocating loader are working perfectly, as is the window manager. What's taking time now is catering for the human element, since once the thing is out in the wild, the lack of - say - an alert box when the maximum number of processes has been reached and launching an app does nothing will generate questions/bug reports, etc. EDIT: A special thank-you to Tebe, who PM'd me out of the blue the other day explaining how to define unallocated space (i.e. ".DS" blocks) inside relocatable binaries. flashjazzcat
Just sent this to MrFish, in case he has time to check it out: I'll spend time on it tomorrow. If I add anything more it'll be simple stuff... more concerned that what's there is reasonably stable. 5 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/154520-new-gui-for-the-atari-8-bit/page/134/#findComment-3167285 Share on other sites

tep392
I just saw your video from a few weeks ago. THIS IS FREAKING AWSOME! What is really sad is that my quad core 2.6 GHz i5 laptop isn't as responsive as your GUI. Even when I'm only running office applications. 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/154520-new-gui-for-the-atari-8-bit/page/134/#findComment-3167816 Share on other sites

kogden
I personally enjoy reading development updates, I'm interested in how something like this is put together instead of whining about how it's not finished. FJC has actually done a lot of good for the old platform with his efforts. His various IDE drivers are great.... he drove forward an actual de facto standard for HDD partitioning. He's actually done things that make my life easier and make my toy more fun to play with. In his spare time. Without expecting anything in return. A lot of it while banging on this GUI. Why do certain people insist on being obnoxious to one of the few people still doing anything interesting on this platform? 6 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/154520-new-gui-for-the-atari-8-bit/page/134/#findComment-3168189 Share on other sites
Muzz73
FJC: Kudos on the progress you are making with this project! I love reading the updates and am looking forward to the day when you feel it will be ready for us to play with. I have a question for you and it's a bit of a stretch (least of your worries right now, I know), but do you plan have support for joystick ports #3 & #4 (on the 400/800) later on? It'd be pretty handy to have a mouse plugged in to one of those ports and not have to sacrifice a joystick port or use a joystick/mouse switch box. Just curious... Thanks! Prodatron
The mouse control is driver based, so a different port shouldn't be an issue at all!
