+Random Terrain
Have you seen this VIC-20 Donkey Kong video? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=auAtyiiMJwQ&rel=0&fmt=18&showinfo=0 Looks pretty good for being on a VIC-20. I never got to play that. I only played Donkey Kong on the Commodore 64. cvga
Wow, that does look good! I have a ton of Vic 20 carts I want to play in 2010. Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/155718-donkey-kong-on-the-vic-20/#findComment-1909526 Share on other sites
Jess Ragan
It's an excellent game. I've played it on both the actual system and through emulation, and it's so close to the arcade game it's uncanny (although not up to the level of the sublime Atari 400/800 version). Atarisoft games on the VIC-20 were hit and miss... Pac-Man in particular was a real clunker, far inferior to HAL Laboratory's Jelly Monsters. However, when they were hits, they were big hits. Moon Patrol was another game by the company that holds up well on the limited VIC-20 hardware. +swlovinist
Nice to see others give some praise to an often overlooked port of Donkey Kong, as well as a great classic computer. The Vic 20 had many great gems that hold up today. Artillery Duel for the system was different than other ports, and is one of my favorites. Kripto
Mario has truly exceptional posture in the Vic 20 version. I wanted one just for Omega Race... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpAwCZ6g290 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/155718-donkey-kong-on-the-vic-20/#findComment-1909555 Share on other sites
Vic George 2K3
The first screen on the VIC-20 Donkey Kong looks a little messed up with how the ladders are placed near the top. +SpiceWare
Yep, it's quite impressive - especially when you know the VIC 20 had no sprites or even a hi-res mode, everything is character based! Omega Race was one of my favorites too, played it a couple days ago to show my visiting nephews what my first computer was like. I never got to play that. I only played Donkey Kong on the Commodore 64. WHAT!!!? I knew I shouldn't have sold my VIC.. Is this game rare and hard to come by? Hell, I might just buy another Vic and get that multi cart. The game may look crude, but for one, on the VIC-20 that is EXTREMELY impressive, and definitely one of the most accurate ports I have ever seen. Ill the levels, the fireballs look like fireballs, and unlike the colecovision port the factory level has that bouncy thing you have to dodge. Wow. He has a vic-20 multicart so I don't think he has the original. Probably your best bet. +Random Terrain
Take a look at Buck Rogers Planet Of Zoom: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ny8aIG8h4Gs&rel=0&fmt=18&showinfo=0 Looks like the guy doesn't know how to play, but ignore that and look at the graphics. Hard to believe that's on a VIC-20. I missed out on all kinds of good stuff back then. That's one of the reasons why I started making my own games. It was for the fun of bringing something to life that didn't exist and because most of the games I had weren't that good. Video
Vic was a nice computer, and almost everything on it was on carts My poor collection of old C64 stuff is slowly dying due to bitrot and the crappy environment I live in But the Vic will be around for a goodlong time. Mirage
Awww... I actually love Radar Rat Race on the Vic. It was probably my very first Vic-20 cart, or at least one of the first 3. The Vic-20 was my first computer after only having had the 2600 before that. Fantastic machine, and many of the game carts are really surprisingly good for it. Anyone who hasn't messed with it, I'd highly recommend it. It's a nice manageable game library too, so it's pretty easy to go through and try out all or most of the games for it pretty quickly. I didn't know that Radar Rat Race was a rip off of Rally-X back then. I thought it was a unique Commodore game. Never saw or played Rally-X until a year or two later. It was like getting a light kick to the silly sack. I liked Radar Rat Race, but I hated that irritating Three Blind Mice tune that tried to drill a hole in your brain. The last couple notes of it are so off-key it turns an irritation into an abomination. +wood_jl
I really like the Vic-20 version of Donkey Kong. It's really fun - and it has all 4 screens! It ain't arcade-perfect, but considering the age of the old Vic, it's great! It also has all 4 levels, and it has the bouncing springs on the elevator level - unlike the Colecovision version. Considering Vic specs, it's quite an accomplishment! I have the Mega-cart as well, and I'm really happy with it and glad I got it. It's not exactly cheap, but it's an incredible product. You can get a complete-in-box Vic-20 cheap on Ebay, grab an Atari 8-bit composite video cable, and the Mega-cart; throw them all in the Vic-20 box if you have too many systems to keep connected at one (I suspect that is the case of many here). Talk about a compact little package of big-time entertainment. It takes up so much less space than my other systems (with all their cartridges and crap) that it's impressive.
