Zoyx
Just got done playing the homebrew PC game, "Invaders, Possibly from Space". Uses the mouse to move the shooter. So it proves the concept that the paddle would work for a Paddle Space Invaders for the 2600. Balance issues would need to be addressed, but it can be done. Bonus: Getting Rush's Tom Sawyer to play in the background . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtUkphb_Pbg
BigO
I'm all for it and have thought a few times about whether or not an "extreme" (fast paced, paddle controlled) version of SI could be hacked for the 2600. Just don't have time to do a programming project like this any time in the near future. What do you mean by "balance issues"? the.golden.ax
Those invaders are indeed naughty... you just tell me when and where and I'll give them a good paddle. Forgive my ignorance, but on left to right games, wouldn't it be possible to create a special controller that did not require classic games be reprogrammed? I understand that this is more difficult than simply hooking left and right up to a paddle as it would need to logically ascertain the varied degree of left to right at your current position on screen, and perhaps need to be self centering... however this idea sounds easier than re-doing all the classics. There seems to be a recurrent demand for this kind of thing. AX
Zoyx
What do you mean by "balance issues"? The paddle would let you move faster. I think that would make the game easier. So to bring the game back into balance, something would need to be introduced to make the game the same amount of challenge as the base game. Although since I mastered the original Space Invaders, I'm in favor of making it harder than the base game.

AX Yes there is a demand - this idea is far from original - e.g. http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/156000-games-that-should-have-used-paddle-controllers

Here is a better link as I had to read through the whole thread to get to the part where the adapter was suggested. http://www.atariage.com/forums/topic/156000-games-that-should-have-used-paddle-controllers/page__view__findpost__p__1915670 I'll be contacting BigO and see if we can come up with something in reverse of what he did. Nukey Shay
There's 14 cycles being wasted every other line of -printed- rows of invaders, so there is certianly enough time to read the pots and provide fine resolution in the original game. It would probably make the game too easy, tho.

What are your thoughts on making the game play like you're watching it on Fast Forward? Any timing delays that can be removed or reduced (maybe gaining more processing cycles?) S1500
I also would like to see a paddle-based Invaders. It would be an interesting hybrid of Space Invaders + what is it, astrosmash? More paddle games, dangit.
