Thinking about buying a PS3...

Page 19 of the PS3 manual shows how to open up the controller to get to the battery.

Sweet. That may come in handy some day.

Although it seems to me someone here on AA took apart a PS3 controller awhile back and couldn't get it back together. In fact at one time Sony stated they were going to replace PS3 controller for free if they stopped holding a charge, so it's obvious at one time even they didn't recommend it.

Is there a PS3 shortage going on? I've been checking Amazon everyday for like a week and a half and the only people selling them is third party. I've got tax returns and a bonus burning a hole in my pocket.

i bought a 60gb at launch and it still works fine. you can still find 60gb ps3's but they'll run you 500-600 from what i've seen. it is fully backwards compatible with ps1 and ps2 as well, i also like the design but most other people prefer the slim due to it's smaller size. not sure about a warranty, my cousin had a psp out of warranty and sony sent him a new one for free. not sure if there customer service is really that good or if he just got lucky, the ps3 is a pretty reliable system so i think the original warranty would probably be enough depending on it's length. i dread the day when my older model does mess up, i really don't like the slim models.

Yea, batteries on a dual shock are replaceable. They wouldn't make them so they weren't.

My point btw Moycon about the controller is out of box cost. I'm not talking about an extra controller, I'm talking about the price of the core console. 360 is more expensive than a PS3 in that respect if you want it to match it in specs (minus the blu ray drive). I understand it's a "choice" and all, but we're in 2010 for God's sake. Not many people out there are going to decline rechargeable controllers, wifi, large hdds, and HD movie disks.

All that happened is you made an incorrect statement about charging controllers and I pointed it out.

It's ok, it's fixed. Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition.

BTW the Dualshocks batteries AREN'T made to be replaced. People here on AA have ruined their sticks taking them apart.

Also it seems there is a shortage going on right now...

Final Fantasy is probably moving some consoles this month.

Looks like it's going to be a bit before I get a Slim.

I really appreciate all the info and opinions, everybody! It's sweet that the PS3 has a Web browser and can use any USB keyboard and mouse, 'cause my iMac needs to go in for warranty work at some point. I'm thinking maybe I'll get the PS3 first and use that to satisfy my Web addiction while the iMac's in the shop.

according to everything i've read, the shortage is still going on. with final fantasy and god of war, i expect any stock that does pop up to sell out instantly. supposedly amazon, best buy and gamestop are perpetually sold out. you may want to try walmart, target, toys r us, sears, places like that. somebody has gotta have them. or as a last resort try searching local gamestops on their website.
