+therealbountybob
Ok here we go, ten basic games, I tried to pick ones that are fun, honest, and only threw in a couple of mine The scoring will sound complicated, erm because it is, but I'll take care of it so you can concentrate on playing [Link to Tourney Current Points Standings] Boot with BASIC enabled Final?! version of ATR (all games startable using joystick, rearguard press fire for 1 player & defaulted to level 2, 'reset' now takes you to the disk menu without a reboot (thanks to Rybags) + Runaway Van now works on an 800 & fixed annoying bug in Minelayer & Gwobby without DL mods on title screen to see if it works on US 130XE?! Runaway van fixed again oops, and Ball Harbour colours fixed!): HSC7BestOfBASIC.ATR (ATR is 1050 density, all games apart from Gwobby run on an 800/48K if anyone needs any help let me know) 10 Games 1 HSC point for each played 5 bonus HSC points for qualifying in all 10 games. Then, for those who have qualified, these scores go into a table for each game and are awarded tourney points: from 1 for the bottom player up to the number of people who have played. e.g. If five players qualify for Briky then the top player gets 5 tourney points, down to 1 for the 5th placed player. Finally, at the end of the month all tourney points are added and an overall table is scored in the same manner with real HSC points. 1 for bottom and a number equal to the number of players for top. Apart from Rear Guard play all games on the default settings. Some of the games I have tweaked a little, more men etc so best play the ones from this ATR. There may be a few bugs to fix along the way Here are the games and a brief description: Briky Qualifying Target 350 Survive, collect faces for more points, avoid bombs. Rear Guard (Play on skill level 2) Qualifying Target 300 Shoot bad guys before too many of them escape from the screen. Hint, get up high! Runaway Van (one of my own, sorry) Qualifying Target 350 Jump over the orange guy, collect the purple geezer or was it run him over Gwobby Qualifying Target: Beating the Magmapus (shoot his legs off!) on Level 20! (level displayed on title screen just about legible if you turn the colour up.) Draw a line so Gwobby (our hero) can reach the exit safely. Practice on 'gwobeasy' until you get the hang of it. Use fire and right to draw down diagonally quickly, collect ammo for shootout's every 10th screen (full instructions on the website) Balloonacy Qualifying Target 1200 Pop balloons with your head, press fire to use hands if you miss one. Watch out for skulls! Minelayer Qualifying Target 350 Get to your base whilst avoiding the mines! Ball Harbour Qualifying Target 2530 as this was way too easy! Catch stuff from pipes? (Hard to see the grey so turn the TV up, no not the volume ) Rebound Qualifying Target 8000 Fast paced shooting 'n' dodging. Flying Bombs Qualifying Target 75,000 Shoot planes, avoid planes, erm you're in a tank Escape Qualifying Target 20,000 Collect bricks in your lorry, take them to the river and build a crossing, simple? Did I mention the wall of fire and fuel limit?! You can drop bricks anywhere and collect them again.
Trooper
Damn it! You make me want to play these games which means I'll have to get Atari800Win running on my computer since the Atari 800 PSP emulator I'm using don't have BASIC option built in
AB Positive
Wow, one of the few times I won't be holding down Option as I boot the 800XL
bluecat
Scores so far: BRIKY (where's the c?): 463 REBOUND : 8623 REARGUARD : 200 MINEFIELD : 360 Hey I'm winning!!!
Mr.Amiga500
I just played all these games... but I never want to play them again. If these are the "Best of BASIC", I'd hate to see the worst. I suppose Gwobby and Escape are OK, but there must be better BASIC games out there.

How could anyone not like Briky You should have seen some of the ones I didn't pick I think voters knew what they were letting themselves in for... I did download a load more but didn't have time to play them so went for mostly ones I knew. Some 'BASIC' games were proper commercial games like Dodge Racer but are mostly machine code so I picked ones that were more in the spirit. I did check about 4 threads from atariage about basic games people liked but apart from Rear Guard mostly they were not really arcade games. If anyone has any other favourites or ideas let me know for future bonus round options. It's only a few points in the scheme of things 10 games x1 pt each = 10pts + 5pts qualifying for all ten bonus = 15pts + say 15 people play 15pts for the winner = 30pts Screen-shots optional folks Here's my efforts so far: Briky 552 Escape 31,805 Balloonacy 4,

Sorry, but I didn't like Briky. His smiling face made me want to punch the TV. No, I'm exaggerating. That's actually the only game I played more than once. (probably because it was the first ) I think I found a bug because "Briky" (...if that is his real name...) ended up stuck in a side wall, but didn't die. (bastard just sat there, smiling at me)

(bastard just sat there, smiling at me) No, not one of mine (it's too good) was am important game for me though; for many years I used it's character redefinition routine in my games. The whole game has nice simple code for anyone learning basic. Nobody has heard of this game, I don't know where I got it from. It's the only game ever thst I've searched for and atarionline.pl didn't have in it's database - (r u reading this Kaz? ) The bugs are part of the fun with basic games so you can fix them in true RAD sytle and introduce more bugs. Getting bricked in is all in a day's work for our block faced hero, anyway where's 'em scores ?

+therealbountybob
I can't get Runaway Van and Gwobby to start. I get error - 141 at line 1530 Gwobby needs 64K so wont run on A800, just tried Van on A800 under emulator and recreated the error - it's the clear screen on gr.17 that's causing the error, weird?! OK have fixed this by printing blank lines instead! Now the guy is there but you can't see him Will have a go at fixing this for the 800 tomorrow! Rear Guard - 300 after a bunch of goes, maybe this is a bit harder than I thought Flying Bombs 120,

+therealbountybob
I can't get Runaway Van and Gwobby to start. I get error - 141 at line 1530 Runaway Van is now fixed for the 800, it didn't like using a "-" as a redefined graphic for some reason even though it showed on the title screen, really strange so I used an "X" and the little orange man is no longer invisible. Just to show I won't necessarily do better at my own games here is my effort!

+therealbountybob
I have a 130XE so memory is not the problem I've played Gwobby on a PAL 130XE and the emulator under NTSC ok, does the game get to the title screen/start at all If you are playing Gwobby on the emulator then I'd recommend playing on NTSC as the game benefits from being a tad quicker. p.s. Level
Cebus Capucinis
Nope, it goes to that Line 141 error message.
+therealbountybob
Nope, it goes to that Line 141 error message. hmm, I can only think this is RAM related so have taken out a few rems as Gwobby was living right on the edge... maybe the multicart system/menu takes up some bytes? Please try the new ATR and let me know
