The Jr. List

Here's the little beauty

Atari%202600%20VCS%20Jr%20short%20rainbo

Atari 2600 VCS Jr incl. Centipede, short rainbow cib, Made in Ireland, PAL, Atari Inc, serial 174AI018412 (console), Atari Inc 1983

On the box is the rectangle for the serial number, but nothing is written into, nor stamped, or even a label, it's clean, like never used for its purpose.

Yes, never paid attention to it, first time I noticed...Just checked, all my short rainbows and my all black have 'colour', the English spelling..

So this on is the second oldest in THAT list, cool.

And it's still got the sellotape covering on the silver. Smells like new still, hasn't been used much, even the rubber feet are like new. Or really good taken care of.

Thanks to toymailman's research in the 7800 SN thread I've been able to figure out the manufacturing dates for a lot of the long rainbow consoles. Still unsure about ones starting with "AT" or the Chinese consoles, but it looks like the long rainbow variant was introduced sometime in 1986 (probably 1987 for PAL regions). The NTSC versions were produced until at least 1990 while of course the PAL versions went on until 1991/92.

I assume someone figured this out but it wasn't listed. It seems the format for Long Rainbow NTSC serial numbers is

A1 y m NNNNNNN

For example:

Quote

A18C1975714 - Seen on eBay by ApolloBoy (Taiwan, manufactured December 1988)

A1 8=1998 C=12=December 1975714=1,975,714th unit made (at that factory)?

For older models, I believe it is

AT yy mm XXXXX

The yy seems obvious, and the mm is always in the range 00-11. But that could be coincidence, as the XXXXX seems random. Maybe, like the score in Asteroids, it flips after 100,000?

I can also report (second hand) another 1-chip unit: A1982042053

I hunt for more unicorns...

@ApolloBoy  I have another number to add and I can verify from ebay photos that A1891884673 is 3 chip. Also, the 89 is blue.

Working on getting info for A18B1945963

I stupidly sold my deadstock NIB 2600 jr. short rainbow version right here in 2019 that I previously bought months before on eBay when I picked up my VCS cartridge adapter for my newly-acquired and repaired 2-port 5200 after first selling my a/v-modded 5200 because it wouldn't work with the adapter.

DUMB. DUMB. DUMB.

I used to use it with my old Harmony Encore during my early multicarting days before having to sell both that 2600 jr short rainbow and that same Harmony Encore (I do intend to get another Harmony Encore for my VCS adapter when I get my $1,200 after Congress stops bickering about how much the goddamn airlines should get and gets us our $$$!) and getting a Flashback 9 HDMI instead, I currently use that same FB 9 (and will use the Encore in that same VCS adapter instead later on in newer episodes) on my 2600 Edition of The Atari Report, I will upload the new episode tonight where I will be reviewing Venture Reloaded!!! And I'll be reviewing Scramble for the 5200 on the 5200 Edition too, so watch for those new episodes tonight!!!

Mine is a long rainbow, NTCS, purchased in Toronto Canada.  Made in Taiwain, serial AT870132652, and references Atari Corporation.

Interesting information?  The plastic spikes that unlock the cartridge's dust shield broke of within months of purchase (1980-something), but I think that happens to everyone's sooner or later :)
