SEgamer
Huh, I always thought the Adventure Island series was pretty popular. Another game that I remember people passing up was Mischief Makers for the N64. Seems that everyone saw it at movie gallery, but no one bothered to rent it. One of the few 2D side scrollers back when Nintendo and Sony was trying to show off their 3D titles.
Austin
Agreed on Friday the 13th. When you actually know what you're supposed to do and HOW the game works, it's actually pretty good. If only Jason's third form wasn't damn-near-impossible though (I hear he's beatable, but I haven't personally been able to do it the third time around). I remember Adventure Island games renting respectably well at the local video stores but the gaming magazines were pretty harsh with them calling them cheap knockoffs of Mario. (The later critics on the web have savaged all but the 3rd one pretty hard since as well.) It was one of those games that was fun when the NES was really hot but got lost in the shuffle over time because the series didn't transcend many other systems. (Like Star Tropics in a way.) That's kind of funny, especially considering Adventure Island is older than Super Mario bros (or I certainly played it first) I immidiately saw the similarities, but thought AI was first. (excluding Mario bros, obviously)
Krooze L-Roy
Never been sure if "underrated" means a game is rated by too few people, or rated too low by too many. Guess I'll just give one of each. I think it's fairly well-liked amongst the few who've stumbled upon it, but my absolute favorite PS1 game is No One Can Stop Mr Domino. Very unique game, even to this day. And I've always been confused about the hate that the 2600 version of Pac-man gets. It's as if everybody got together one day and agreed to start saying it sucks, like as a goof or something. I loved it as a kid, and I still think it's a very respectable and fun conversion of Pac-man.
james82
Q Bert on the PS1 It maybe just Q Bert but I love how you finish one puzzle more of the game opens for you. i think i only played that on one system and it was a sega sg 1000,damn addictive game
VectorGamer
Did I mention Reactor? An addictive game that is often misunderstood. Original gameplay, nice looking arcade cabinet, cool sound effects and music. Although the 2600 port isn't arcade perfect, it really is a nice title. I played a bit more of it last night. Yes as a matter of fact I have a Centipede cabinet sitting in the garage that I am loading MAME on so I can play all the trackball games. I added a second button to the control panel just so I could play Reactor. What's missing in the 2600 port is the second button to "energize" (for lack of a better word) your guy so he can forcefully push the bad guys into the walls. ~llama
The Adventure Island series for the NES: Insanely addictive even if the controls are spotty at times. The original for NES is great, but I love Super Adventure Island on the SNES even more. I think it's underrated, but not by much. Seems like it's pretty well regarded.
